COMBINATION BOILER AND ROASTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 7, 1918.
Application filed July 17, 1917. Serial No. 181,099.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CAMBY CLARKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Peek, in the county of Sanilac and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Boilers and Roasters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a combination boiler and roaster.
The object of my invention is to provide a boiler in which is removably arranged an auxiliary bottom or baflie which prevents the contents when placed within the boiler or roaster from coming in direct contact with the bottom thereof, thus avoiding the same becoming burnt or otherwise ruined.
Another object of this invention is to provide a boiler or roaster of this character which may be used for preserving, canning, pickling or the like and also may be used for roasting meats, such as fowl, fish or the like and it is equipped with a perforated bafiie which is located within the boiler so as to prevent the contents from coming in direct contact with the bottom thereof.
Another object of this invention is to provide a boiler of this .type which is equipped with a novel rack adapted to support the boiler away from contact with a stove or other heating source and is also provided with handles whereby the device may be transferred from place to place.
A still further objectof this invention is to provide a device of this character, which will be simple, practical and comparatively inexpensive in construction, and one that can be manufactured and sold at a low cost.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and set forth in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device as made in accordance with this inven-- tion.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the supporting rack and handles.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the bafile or auxiliary bottom, which is adapted to be arranged within the boiler or roaster.
Fig. 4c is a transverse sectional view of the device as a whole.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawing.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a boiler or roaster constructed in accordance with my invention. In its preferred embodiment, the boiler or roaster is oblong and has upwardly and outwardly inclined-end and side walls so as to provide a large top portion and a relatively small bottom portion. I
The top 2 is adapted to close the upper end of the boiler, and this top is provided centrally of its ends with a handle 3 whereby the top may be raised or lowered from the boiler or roaster. The top is provided on its under side with a depending flange 1, and this flange is located adjacent the peripheral edge of the top and is adapted to engage the inner sides of the side and end walls of the boiler or roaster 1 to prevent the top from shifting thereon. The upper edge of the boiler or roaster is turned back upon itself to provide an exterior retaining bead 5 which is adapted to abut the under side of the top at a point beyond the depending flange so as to prevent the top from slipping down between the side walls.
A perforated battle 7 has its opposite side edges bent downwardly as at 8, which defines supporting members, and the battle 7 is of a diameter as great as the bottom of the boiler or roaster 1 and it is adapted to be arranged therein to space the contents placed in the boiler or roaster from contact with the bottom thereof, thus preventing the contents from burning when the same is placed upon a heating source.
A pair of handles 9 are rigidly connected to the end walls of the boiler or roaster 1 as shown in Fig. 1, and when the device is used the handles 9 may be used as guides or may be used for transferring the boiler or roaster from place to place.
A supporting rack, designated by the numeral 10, is formed of a single length of wire looped to provide a pair of longitudinally extending bars which constitute the body of the rack. The bars 11 are crossed centrally, as at 12, and are adapted to be placed in engagement with the under side of the bottom of the boiler or roaster 1 and extend longitudinally thereof. The ends of the bars are bent upwardly as at 13 and crossed centrally as at 11 to provide the substantially inverted U-shaped handles 15. The handles 15 of the rack are adapted to extend upwardly through the guides 9 or the handles of the boilero'r roas'ter "1, thus locating the webs of the handles 15 up- "weirdly beyond the upper surface "of the cover 2 which provides means :whereby the device may be lifted from and placed upon a heating source.
It can be readily seen that by use of this Tack'the;supportingbars -11' space the bottom at the boiler or roaster from'direc't contact with the heating source and also avoid "the placing of all of the strain upon the rivets or: other 'eonnections'of the handles or guides 9 to the boiler or roaster body whenbeing lifted.
It is also to be understood that the ban dles 'oreguides will prevent lateral shifting *movement of the handles of rack 10and thereby avoid all injury due to the same tilting or twisting when being transferred fromthesupport to the heating source or vice versa.
Inuse, the member-2 is removed from'the boiler or roaster '1 and the baffle is placed therein, as shown in Fig. 1. 'The side'fianges of the b'aflieengag'e the side walls of the boiler or rbastenasshown, thus preventing lateralshifting movement of the battle with relation tothe boiler 01' receptacle 1. The
cover isthen replaced as shown and'the device is grasped by the handles and placed upon the rack 10,' the handlesof the rack 10 i being passed upwardly through the bandle's'orguide's 9 and thusthe device may be easily andquickl'y handled while in use.
What is'c'laimed 'is:
1. A boiler or roaster of the class described including a hollowbody, a cover {removablyjseoured upon said body, a perforatedbaffle plate locatedinthe body, handles constituting guides secured to the endwalls bfthe body, and a rack removably'associ- "ated with-thebody, said rack havin-g its ends formed -from -a"single length of wire arranged to zpro 'i 'ide spaced"bars wh1ch bars are crossed'centrally and have their extreme ends bent upwardly at right angles thereto to form lifting handles, said lifting handles extending through the handles of the body, thereby preventing any lateral shifting "'movement of the body with relation to the rack. v
A device of the'class described including a hollow body having side walls, a bottom, and end walls, a-cover having an annu'lar flange secured to its under side and spaced from the peripheral edge thereof to engage'the inner-sidebf the body to hold the cover thereon, handles constituting 7 5 --gu1des secured to the end walls of the bodyfl a rack formed of a single length of wire comprising spaced bars 'crossed centrally and theends ofsaidbars bent upwardly at right angles-thereto forming lifting handleswhich extend through the-handles on the end walls of the "body'a'nd project beyond the top or. cover%there0f, said handles cf'the' rack locating the spaced bars on the under side of and in engagement with the-body to space the bottom'of the body-Ta relatively spaced distance from a heating source.
In'testimony whereof I 'affixmy signature in presence of two witnesses.
CAMBY CLARKE.
