THOMAS C. ANDRE, OF BRIDGEPORT, WISCONSIN.
DOOR-CLOSER.
means. I
Application filed July 24, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS C. ANDRE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Crawford and State of "Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Door-Closers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to door closing devices and it has for its object to produce a simple and improved device of this class which may be applied to a door or casing, and which may be readily changed or adjusted to operate in connection with either a right hand or a left hand door.
A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and eficient device of the character set forth including the use of duplex springs and a movable tensioning device actuated by a spirally flanged rod.
Further objects of the invention are to simplify and improve the construction, arrangement and operation of the component parts of the device.
With these and other ends in view, which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when desired.
In the drawing,
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation showing the device applied to a door frame or casing.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 22 in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 33 in Fig. 2.
Fig. i is a transverse sectional view taken on the line H in Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a view in side elevation showing the device applied to a door instead of to a casing.
Fig. 6 is a view in side elevation showing the device applied to a left hand door, the remaining views showing the application of adevice to a right hand door.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Serial No. 182,485.
Fig. 7 is a perspective detail. view of one of the end members of the frame.
Fig. 8 is a perspective detail view showing the head block detached.
Corresnondiw rts in -a1 figures are denoted by like characters of reference.
The frame of the improved device has been shown as being composed of two rods or side members 15, said rods being offset near the ends thereof to form shoulder 16 on which the upper and lower end members 17, 18 abut, said end members having been shown as consisting of plates, each having apertures 19 to engage the reduced ends of the side members, said reduced ends being threaded to receive nuts 20 whereby the said upper and lower end members are detachably connected with the side members. The end members are each provided with bent portions forming lugs 21 that are so disposed as not to interfere with the tightening or the removal of the nuts 20, said lugs being apertured at 22 for the reception of fastening members such as screws 23 whereby the device may be mounted in position for operation on a door or a door casing as the case may be.
The upper and lower end members 17 18 afiord bearings for a rod 24 which is provided with spirally disposed flanges 25. The rod has been shown as being equipped with stop collars 26, to prevent lengthwise movement thereof, said stop collars being secured by well known means such as cotter pins 27 set screws or the like.
Guided for slidable movement along the side members 15 of the frame is a cross piece or head block 28 having a nut 29 that engages the spirally fianged rod 24:. Fitted on the side members 15 between the head block nd one or the other of the end members 17 18 are coiled springs 30. A crank or arm 31 which may be of any desired shape and dimensions is fitted securely on the lower end of the rod 24, said crank or arm being adapted for engagement with the door when the device is mounted on the door casing or with the door casing when the device is mounted on the door as will be readily seen by refer nce to the figures of the drawing.
It will be readily seen that when the device is properly mounted and adjusted the opening of the door will cause the rod 24. to be rotated, thereby moving the head block lengthwise of the rod thereby compressing and tensioning the springs 30. It follows that when the door is released the force of the springs will be expanded to effect the closing thereof. The device may be applied to right or left hand doors by arranging the springs between the head block and the upper end member of the frame for one class of doors and between the head block and the lOWer end member of the frame for the other class of doors, the one arrangement having been shown in Figs. 1 to 5 and the other arrangement in Fig. 6 of the drawing. By removing one end member and the head block the position of the springs may be readily changed in the desired manner.
What is claimed, is
1. In a door closing device, a frame comprisin side members and end members detachab Iy connected therewith, said end members having apertured lugs, a spirally flanged rod journaled in the end members, a
head block guided on the side members and having a nut engaging the spirally flanged rod, and springs coiled about the side members and abutting terminally on the head block and on one of the end members.
2. In a door closing device, a frame comprisin side members and end members detachab ly connected therewith, said end members having apertured lugs, a spirally flanged rod journaled in the end members, a head block guided on the side members and having a nut engaging the spirally flanged rod, and springs coiled abOllt the side members and abutting terminally on the head block and on one of the end members, the spirally flanged rod being provided with an arm or crank at one end thereof.
3. In a door closing device of the class described, a frame comprising side members consisting of rods that also constitute guide members, said rods having reduced threaded ends, end members engaging the reduced ends of the side members, nuts whereby said end members are detachably secured, a head block slidably engaging the side members between the end members and having a nut, a spirally flanged rod rotatably mounted in the end members and engaging the nut in the head block, said rod having an arm or crank curved springs mounted on the side members between the head block and one of the end members, said springs being exchangeable from one end of the frame to the other by detaching one of the end members and the head block.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature.
THOMAS C. ANDRE.
