UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN ASH-SIFTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 126,475, dated May 7, 1872.
Specication describing a new and Improved Ash-Sifter, invented by GEORGE F. MILLARD, of Pittsfield, in the county of Berkshire and State of Massachusetts.
My invention consists of a Wide dat-bottomed sieve, with Oval sides and open top, suspended on a cranked shaft, which drops, through slots from the top .of a case into bearings in two sides of the case, low enough for a cover of' the case to close down and con'ne the dust while the sifting is going on. Vhen the ashes are sifted out the sieve is taken out of its case tO empty the coal remaining in it. The ashes which accumulate in the bottom ot the case are discharged through the top from time to time, as required, by turning the case over.
Figure l is a vertical section of my improved ash-sitter taken on the line of Fig. 2, and Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken on the line y y of Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is a box or case of any suitable kind, with slots B and O in two of its sides, extending down from the top to bearings D, for the shaft E of the sieve, one of said slots extending entirely through the side of the case, and having a button, E, to swing over the shaft and close it, to prevent the escape of the dust. Said box is also provided with a cover, F, for closing the top after the cinders and ashes are poured into the sieve H, which is open at the top to receive them. This sieve has oval sides K, with the upper parts I slanting sharply inward and a wide dat bottom between. It is swung forward and back by the crank or lever L, and, by reason of its Hat bottom and oval sides, gives a quick forward-and-back motion to the contents, and as quickly arrests said contents by the oval sides in a manner weli calculated to do the work quickly.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The ash-sifter, consisting of slotted box A B O, crank-shaft D L, button E, cover F, and side-curved sieve H I K, all arranged as and for the purpose described.
GEORGE F. MILLARD.
