The invention relates to devices for con-' trolling the flow of fuel to burners, and particularly to burners which include an electric motor in their operating mechanism.
An object of the invention is to provide means for stopping the flow of fuel to the burner when the electric circuit is opened or when the current in the circuit decreases below a predetermined value.
A further object of the invention is to provide means for simultaneously opening the fuel line and closing the ignition circuit.
The invention possesses other advantageous features, some of which, with the fore going, will be set forth at length m the following description where shall outline in full that form of the invention which have selected for illustration in the drawing accompanying and forming part of the present specification. In said drawlng T have shown one specific form of my invention, but it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to such form, since the invention, as expressed in the claims may be embodied in a plurality of forms. In the drawmg I have shown my invention applied to a rotary burne in which the fuel is atomized by a rotating element to which the blower for supplying air for combustion is attached, so that both arh rotated by the same motor, but it is to be understood that the invention is equally applicable to all types of burners in which an electric motor is used, either to atomize the liquid or to introduce the air for combustion.
The drawing is a partly diagrammatic representation of the fuel control system of my invention applied to a rotary burner. The burner consists of a casing 2 having a rotating element or cup 3 therein for producing a fuel spray, which is driven by the electrlc motor 4, through the shaft 5. Se-
cured to the shaft below the cup is a blower which is rotated by the motor to induce the necessary air for combustion into the casing.
A spark plug 6 or other ignition device is arranged in the casing for igniting the combustible mlxture.
Fuel is fed to the burner from the supply tank 7 through the conduit 8, and a pump 9 arranged in the conduit and connected to the shaft 5 operates as a meter to measure the fuel fed to the burner in proportion to the speed of the motor. Means are provided for opemng and closing the conduit as the motor circuit is closed and opened.
Arranged in the conduit 8 is a valve casing 12 having an inlet passage 13 and an outlet passage 14. Arranged in the casing is an iron core or plunger 15 provided on its end with a valve 16 adapted to seat in and close the inlet passage 13. Surrounding the casing is a solenoid 18 which, when ener-' glzedfraises the core and thereby opens the valve. The solenoid 18 is connected in series with the battery 19, the motor 4 and the control switch 21. Connected in parallel with the motor circuit is a primary circuit containing a make and break device 22 and the inductively connected secondary circuit is connected to the spark plug 6.
When the control switch isclosed, the motor is started, the fuel conduit is opened and the ignition device broughtinto operation. When the control switch is opened, the
supply of fuel is immediately shut off, so
that the continued rotation of the motor due to the momentum of the rotating parts,
will not cause a continued feed of fuel;
When the burner is used in connection with a steam boiler operating under widely varying loads, as in' a motor vehicle, which is provided with means for automatically opening and closing the motor circuit in accordance with variations in boiler conditions, the solenoid valve operates to shut oflf the fuel instantlv and thereby permits of much closer regulation of the boiler conditions,
I claim.
1. The combination with a liquid fuel burner, of an electric motor operatively associated therewith, a circuit for said motor, a conduit through which fuel is conveyed to said burner and electrically operated means in said conduit and connected to said circuit for opening and closing said conduit.
2. The combination with a liquid fuel ciated therewith, a circuit for said motor, a conduit through which fuel is conveyed to said burner, a valve in said conduit and electrical means connected to said circuit for opening and closing said valve. 7
3. The combination with a liquid fuel burner, ofan electric motor operatively associated therewith, a circuit for said motor, aconduit through which fuel is conveyed to said burner, a valve in said conduit and a solenoid arranged to open and close said valve connected to said circuit.
4. The combination with a liquid fuel burner, of an electric motor operatively associated therewith, a circuit for said motor, a conduit through which fuel is conveyed to said'burner, and a solenoid operated valve in said conduit for opening and closing said conduit, the solenoid being connected to said circuit so that when the circuit is closed the valve is opened.
5. The combination with a liquid fuel burner, of an electric motor operatively associated therewith, a circuit for said motor, a conduit through which fuel is conveyed to said burner, a solenoid, a valve in said conduit actuated by said solenoid to open and close said conduit, the solenoid belng connected to said circuit, and a fuel measuring device connected to said motor and arranged in said conduit.
6. The combination with a liquid fuel burner, of an electric motor operatively associated therewith, a circuit for said motor, a conduit through which fuel is conveyed to said burner, electrically operated means in said conduit and connected to said circuit for opening and closing said conduit and an ignition device in said burner connected to said circuit.
7. The combination with a liquid fuel burner, of an electric motor operatively as; sociated therewith, a circuit for said motor, a conduit through which fuel is conveyed to said burner, a solenoid operated valve in said conduit arranged to open the conduitwhen the solenoid is energized, the solenoid being connected to said circuit, a spark plug in said burner and a circuit for said spark plug connected to said motor circuit.
