full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in railway ties and fasteners, and has for its primary object to provide means by which the rails are secured to concrete or other composite ties.

eferring more particularly to the drawings, the reference character 5 designates a railway tie which is preferably formed of concrete or other composite material.
ln the manufacture of the tie 5, a U- shaped member 6 is embedded therein, the free ends of the legs of said U-shaped mem* ber projecting from the top face of the tie as at 7 and 8. The projecting leg 7 of the U- shaped member 6 is provided with a hook or the like 9, while thev other leg 8 is screw threaded as at 10 to receive a nut 11.
The rail engaging means comprises a pair of recessed blocks 12 and 13, the bases of the block being of equal length with respect to each other. These blocks 12 and 13 are notched as at 14 to provide projections 15 which are adapted to engage around the side edges of the flange 16 of a rail 17, and these members 12 and 13 are provided with apern tures 18 and19 which are adapted to receive the legs 7 and 8 respectively of the'U-shaped member.
ln assembling the device, the aperture 18 in the member 12 is engaged with the hooked end 9 of the leg 7 of the U-shaped member as shown in Fig. el., and when the aperture 18 and the hooked end 9 of the U-shaped member has been thus engaged the ymember base engages the recess of the tie 5. When the member 12 has been positioned the rail is placed with one of its base flanges beneath the member `15. With the parts in this position, the base of the member 13 is inserted between the base of the rail and the bottom of the recess and of the tie as shown in Fig. 3. The member 13 is now moved so that its base engages the bottom face of the recess of the tie, while during the operation the aperture 19 thereof will receive the screw threaded end 8 of the U-shaped member 6, and the other base 'liange of the rail will be positioned beneath the member 15 of the member 13. The nut 11 is now threaded onto the screw threaded leg 8 of the U shaped member to secure the parts in their operative position.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed, is:
The combination with a railway tie having a channel in its upper side, of a U-shaped member embedded within the tie with the ends thereof projecting into the channel, a pair of rail clamping blocks removably fitted into the channel and detachably receiving lthe ends of the fastener, the blocks being of a depth corresponding to the depth ofthe channel in the tie with the rail engaging portions of said blocks extending above the upper side of the tie, an outturned hook bill formed on one end of the member, and a nut threaded on the other end of the member.
