JAMES HEGGIE, OF GLYDEIBANK, SCOTLAND, ASSIGrhT'OE TO THE SINGER MANUFAC- TUBING COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
PEESSEB-FOOT MECHANISM FOR SENING-MACHINES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. is, rare.
Original application filed April 13, 1915, Serial No. 21,175. Divided and this application filed May 18, 1917. Serial No. 169,385.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMns Hneern, a sub ject of the King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Clydebank, Dumbartonshire, Scotland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Presser-Foot Mechanisms for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in sewing machines, particularly glove sewing machines of "he type fitted with an upright post for receiving the looper-spindle, for uniting by means of a pique scam the overlapping edges of the glove-body and the fourchettes, etc., and has for an object to provide a machine of this class with a presser-mechanism which ofiers greater convenience in use and which is better adapted for gl0vesewing operations than those heretofore known.
In the present instance, the invention is embodied in a sewing machine having a work-supporting post above which is sustained the usual overhanging head in which is mounted a reciprocating needle and the improved presser-mechanism to be described. In the present instance, the presser-mechanism is of the work-feeding type and comprises a presser-bar which reciprocates in a guide carried by a bracket pivoted to the upper end of the head and forming a pendulum-support for the presser-bar; oscillatory movements around a horizontal axis being imparted to the bracket by suitable mechanism.
The presser-foot is divided or split in the direction of its length and one section of the presser-foot is adjustably secured to the other section to slide vertically relatively thereto. The adjustable section of the presser-foot is provided with an upwardly extending bar whose extremity is apertured to embrace an adjustable eccentric mounted on a horizontal pin projecting from the block or collar fixed to the upper end of the presser-bar.
The invention will be better understood by referring to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the preferred embodiment of the invention as incorporated in the overhanging head of a sewing machine, Figs. 2 and 3 are detail views. Fig. 4 is a cross-section taken along the line 4-4, Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a rear view of the adjusting disk and parts associated therewith, and Fig. 6 is a detailed View showing the supporting bracket for said disk.
As disclosed in my application Serial No. 21,175, filed April 13, 1915, of which this application is a division, the machine comprises a frame formed with a work-supporting post 1 and a standard 2 carrying the usual overhanging bracket-arm which terminates in a hollow-head 3. Mounted in the bracket-arm is the main-shaft a carrying at its rearward end the usual pulley-wheel 5 and serving to transmit, through suitable connections, vertical reciprocatory movements to the needle-bar 6 and lifting and feeding movements to the presser-bar 7.
The presser-bar 7 reciprocates in a guidesleeve 7 carried by the lower end of the bracket 8 which is pivotally supported at its upper end by the screw-pin 9 and is adapted to oscillate about said screw-pin as an axis.
The presser-foot is divided or split in the direction of its length into two sections 11 and 12. In order that the sections 11 and 12 may be readily adjusted relatively to one another so as to provide for the unequal thickness of work due to the overlapping of the edges to be united, the forward section, that is to say, the accessible section 11, of the presser-foot is fitted so as to be slidable vertically relatively to the rearward section 12 to which it is connected by a screw 13 passing through a vertically disposed slot 14L in said section 11 and threaded into the presses bar 7. A sheet-metal spring 15'is disposed between the head of the screw 13 and the forward section 11 of the presser-foot serves to yieldingly press said section into intimate frictional contact with the section 12.
The said section 11 of the presser-foot has an upward extension in the form of a bar 17 having an aperture at its upper extremity to embrace an eccentric 18 mounted to turn upon a horizontal pin 19 which is fixed to and projects from a short vertical extension of a block or collar 20 carried by the upper end of the presser-bar 7 Fixed to said eccentric 18 is a disk 21 having perforations, serrations or the like 22 on its forward face adapted to cooperate with the extremity of a spring index-finger 28 fixed to the pin 19 by means of the screw 24.. It will be understood that the operator by rotating the disk 21 and therewith the eccentric 18 will adjust the said section 11 of the presser-foot vertically relatively to the rearward section 12; the index-finger 23 engaging one of the perforations or the like and serving to lock the disk 21 in any desired position of ad justment.
lVhile the preferred embodiment of the invention has been shown and described it is to be understood that various modifications may be made both in the form and arrangement of the various parts within the scope of the invention.
Having thus set forth the nature of the invention, what I claim herein is 1. In a sewing machine, in combination, a resser-bar, a divided presserioot mounted on said presser-bar and comprising rigidly sustained parts adjustable relatively to one another in vertical directions, means supported by the presser-bar for effecting relative adjustment of said parts, and means carried by the presserbar for locking the adjusting means in any desired position.
2. In a sewing machine, in combination, a resser-bar, a divided presser-foot sustained by said resser-bar and comprising parts movable relatively to one another in vertical directions, means supported by the presserbar for positively effecting adjustment of one of said parts in opposite directions relatively to the other, and means carried by the presser-bar for locking the adjusting means in any desired position.
3. In a sewing machine, in combination, a presser bar, a longitudinally divided presser-foot sustained by said presser-bar and comprising parts one of Which is vertically movable relatively to the other, an eccentric rotatably supported by said presser-bar for adjusting said movable part, and means carried by the presser-bar for locking the eccentric in any desired position.
4. In a sewing machine, in combination, a presser bar, a longitudinally divided presser-foot sustained by said Presser-bar and comprising parts one of which is vertically movable relatively to the other, a pin on said resser-bar, an eccentric rotatably mounted on said pin for adjusting said movable part, and a finger fixed on said pin for locking said eccentric in any desired position.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
JAMES HEGG'IE.
