To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER@ MORRIS, a citizen of ythe United States, residing at Clarkston, in the county of Asotinand State of IVaShingt-on, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in yCoi'nbination Fence-Posts, of which the following is a specification. Y, r Y

The improved device may be employed for posts of various forms, such as fence posts and the like, and may likewise be employed or telephone, telegraph, electric light posts and supports for trolley wires, and for similar purposes, and it is not desired therefore to limit the invention in this respect, but for the purpose of illustration, the improved device is shown arranged as an ordinary fence post and comprises an upper wood portion 10 and a lower concrete portion or base 11 upon which the lower vend of the wood portion 10 rests.` The concrete base is of greater indicated 'at Il2.
The portions 10-11 are united by Vsuitable anch-o'ring'g,` devices illustrated in 'de- Vtacli'ed form in Fig. 2, and comprisinga plurality of stay vmembers ot lrelatively lheavy wire bearing over the upper end of the post and engaging its sides and secured at suitable intervals by staples 13 or like devices; The upper end of the post is preferably pro# vided with a lcap indicated at 14e, the cap b'eing somewhat larger than the portion 10 of the p'ost -so that it loverlaps the sides of the same 'and forms a shield or guard to prot'ec't the 'post from moisture. Any required 'number of the stays may be employed but generally -t'our will be used as shown, and when the wood portion 10 of the post is of square form, one of the stays will bearagainst each side of the post. Bearing aro'und'the `opposite sides of the portion l() of the post near its lower end, are horifZon'talstay members 1S-' 19 which pass beneath the said-me`mbe1's' 16 `and areV secured by a parrot the staples 13 one 'ot which fis shown 'in Fig. 1. The other pair of verticalstay members are designated by the charaoter2() and -where 'thelatter are joined by the band members 18-19, the three portions, namely the vertical stay members 20 and the horizontal stay members u'18;19, Iare twisted, as shown at 21 and continued in twisted relation downwardly through the concrete and brought together near the bottom of the concrete with their terminals in terlocked as shown at 22. By this means, the vertical stay members are firmly anchored in the concrete and the post e'ectually supported in position upon the concrete base and prevented from either vertical or lateral displacement. Inserted in the lower end of the woodV portion 10 of the post is a relatively heavy rod 28 which extends below the lower end of the post and for a considerable distance into the concrete base and is formed with a laterally enlarged head 24 as yshown in Fig. 3. A plurality of wire stays 25 connect the vertical stay members within the concrete and likewise engage around the rod 23.V Inconstructing the i1nproved post, the stay members are secured to the wood portion 10 of the post, the rod 23 is inserted therein and the portions of the stay devices which depend below the wood portion l0 of the post are inserted in a suitable mold and the concrete in plastic condition is poured into the mold and around the depending portions of the stay devices, so that when the concrete has set, a .very rigid and substantial post structure is produced as will be obvious. Under certain condition, the stay members 18-19 may be dispensed with and the terminals of the twisted portions 21 looped around the vertical members 20, as shown at 26 in Fig. G. The cap 14 may be of concrete, metal, wood, or other material.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
1. A fence post comprising a plastic base, an upright resting on the base, a cap fitting the top of the upright and having its marginal edge projecting laterally beyond the side walls of the upright and 'provided with seating notches, oppositely disposed substantially inverted U-shaped longitudinal stay members having their upper ends extending across the top of the cap andv intersecting at the center thereof, and their side portions seated in the notches in the cap and thence extended downwardly in contact with the adjacent outer faces of the standard with their lower ends embedded in the plastic base, and fastening devices securing the stay members to the outer faces of the standard.,
2. A fence post comprising a plastic base, a standard resting on the base, oppositely disposed inverted U-shaped longitudinal stay members passing over the top of the standard and down the sides thereof and in Contact with the exterior faces of the standard and having their lower ends united and embedded in the plastic base, a transverse stay member encircling the standard above @epica o this patent may be ohtained for the plastic base and comprising substantially U-shaped portions, the ends of which extend around the adjacent side portions of the longitudinal stay members and are intertwisted with each other and with the side portions of said longitudinal stay members.
3. A fence post comprising'a plastic base,
astandard resting on the base, an anchor" rod embedded in the base and extending upwardly within the standard, intersecting inverted U-shaped longitudinal stay members passing over the top of the standard and having their side portions disposed in contact with and secured to the adjacent faces of the standard and thence extended within the'plastic base, a transverse stay member encircling thestandard above the base and comprising U-shaped members having their ends intertwisted with each other and with the side'portions of the adjacent longitudinal stay members, and superposed trans versely disposed stay bars fitting around the anchor bolt, the ends of oneof the tie bars fitting around the intertwisted portions of the transverse stay members, and the ends of the other tie bar fitting around the longitudinal stay members.
