DAVID FINN, 0F MERRILL, VVISGONSILT;
' RAILROAD TIE.
Application filed MayS, 1917. Serial No. 166,093.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID FINN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Merrill, in the county of Lincoln and State of \Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railroad-Ties; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relatesto certain new and useful improvements in railroad ties, and refers particularly to a tie having a metal bed piece U-shape in cross section and blocks of wood set therein near its ends to support the rail and act as a cushioning means for the rails.
The primary object of my invention is the provision of a metal railroad tie which will have all the resiliency or cushioning ability of a wooden tie, and which will be of such simple construction as to permit its produc tion at an extremely low cost.
A further object of my invention is the provision of a metal railroad tie having carried thereby novel means for securing a rail thereto, and hence dispensing with the faulty railroad spikes.
,Yith the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description procoeds, my invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of arts substantially as hereinafter described and more particularly defined by the appended claim, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings 1 have illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of my invention constructcd according to the best mode I have so far devised for the practical application of the principles of my invention.
Figure l is a front view of one end of my tic, part in section. and part in elevation.
Fig. 2 is a top view thereof as indicated and comprising bottom and side parallel walls, and formed on the upper edges of the parallel walls are the flanges (S, and disposed in the bed plate near each end thereof is a wooden supporting block for the usual rail 8.
As clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 3, this block fits snugly between the side walls of the bed piece, and its top extends somewhat above the top edges of the sides of the bed piece to give proper resilient support to the rail, as will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which an invention of this character appertains.
The flanges 6 are apertured, as at 9, to receive the bolts 10 for securing the rail en gaging plates 11 in place to retain the rail upon the tie, and these plates 11 are shaped to conform with the foot of the rail and block and have downwardly struck flanges 12 for snug engagement with the ends of the block 7 This downwardly struck flange 1 is intermediate the ears 13 that are secured to the flanges 6 by the bolt 10 as aforesaid.
In the form of rail engaging plate shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the cars 13 extend laterally from the plate parallel. with the rail, while in the form shown in Fig. d, these cars extend in line with the outer edges of the plate. it will be understood that the form of plate shown in Fig. l, is of width to extend across the lateral flanges of the bed plate 5 in order to permit the ears 13 to register with said lateral flanges.
Thus it will be seen that l have devised a tie construction having all the resiliency of an all wood tie and which will outlive a wooden tie as the block 7 may be reversed when its upper face becomes worn, and that if desired, the space in the bed piece intermediate the block 7 at each end thereof may be filled with reinforced concrete or any other desired material.
What is claimed is: i
A railroad tie comprising, in combination, a bed piece U-shaped in cross-section, uninterrupted longitudinal flanges extending from the upper edge of the bed piece, spaced rail seat cushion blocks fitted in the bed piece and having their upper faces upon a higher plane than the upper edge of said bed piece, pairs of rail clamping plates fitted to each cushion block having ears extending downwardly and laterally therefrom and adapted to engage the lateral flanges of the suflicient g I reeatee aforesaid bed piece, the ears and bed piece bolts for snugengageinent with the cushion flanges belng provided With registered aperblocks to prevent dislodgnient oi the same tures adapted to receive securing bolts, railsubstantially as described. 10
foot engaging Webs extending from the rail In testimony that I claim the foregoing I clamping plates conforming to the shape of have hereunto set my hand at Merrill, in the the rail flanges, and depending flanges discounty of Lincoln and State of Wisconsin. posed between the ears of the rail clamping DAVID FINN.
