To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE WV. HARRoLn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Mechanical Locking Devices for Press-Controllers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in mechanical locking device for press controllers, and has for its object to provide an exceedingly simple and effective device of this character, whereby the action of the rheostat will be prevented until the switch controlling the high powered motor has been closed.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character for limiting the working of the rheostat, said device in turn being controlled by the operations of a switch.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a locking device for use upon a press controller for limiting'the downward movement of the cross-head of the rheostat, said locking device being controlled by the movements of a switch to stop the crosshead at a certain position or permit its furth er downward movement.
lVith these ends in view, this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claims.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains, may understand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction in detail referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, in which Figure 1, is a segmental front elevation of a press controller showing only those parts which are essential to the operation of my device.

Fig. 3, is a diagraminatical view of the circuits of a controller.
In carrying out my invention as here embodied 2 represents a control boa-rd or panel having thereon the starting rheostat 3 between the contacts of which operates the cross-head *1, said cross-head operating downwardly by gravity, but limited in its movements or stepped down gradually by means of the ordinary electrically controlled dog or electro-magnet armature to be hereinafter described and this cross-head is secured to the plunger 5 of the solenoid 6, so that when said solenoid is energized, the cross-head at will be drawn to its normal raised position.
In the plunger 5 is slidably mounted the rod 7 adapted to follow the movements of said plunger a predetermined distance, after which said plunger may continue its movements to cause the crosshead to travel over certain contacts of the rheostat without atfecting the position of the rod 7. The rod 7 carries a set of contacts 8 which during the travel of the rod 7 up or down engage the contacts 9 mounted upon the panel 2, certain of said contacts 9 being connected by wires 31 and 32 with the solenoids 10 and 11 which in turn are connected with one leg 33 of a power circuit while the other leg 3% of said power circuit is connected with a certain other of the contacts 9 or the contact common to the circuits of both solenoids 10 and 11 and said solenoids operate the switches 12 and 13 and these switches are eilectrically connected with motors, where by when said switches are closed, the motors will be energized, and for convenience of description I will describe the switch 12 as being connected with a small or slow speed motor 35 and the switch 13 connected with a large or high speed motor 36.
The circuit of the slow speed motor 35 includes the switch 12, the wire 37, the wire 38, the circuit breaker 39, the wire e0 to one side of the main switch 41 which connects with the mains 4:2 and a3, then the wire it, the small motor 35, the wire L5, the rheostat 3 and cross-head l, the wire i6 and wire 47 while the circuitof the high speed motor 36 includes the switch 11, the wire 38, the circuit breaker 39, the wire to, the main switch 41, the wire is, the motor 36, the wire i8, the rhcostat 3 and cross-head 4L and the wire i6.
On the panel 2 adjacent the switch 13 is pii oted a straight lever l t by means of a screw or its equivalent 15 passing through a hole 16 in straight lever 1i, adjacent one end thereof, and on the end adjacent where the hole 16 is formed mounted an up wardly projecting finger 17 carrying a block of insulating material 18 on its upper or outer end adapted to be engaged by the movable portion of the switch 13. To the straight lever let adjacent its opposite end is secured one end of the upright rod 19, the opposite end being fastened to one end of the lever 20, said lever comprising a straight body portion 21, a head 22 at an angle thereto, to which portion is secured the end of the rod 19 and a foot portion 23 formed from the opposite end at right angles thereto.
By constructing this lever in this manner, it may be secured to the side of the rheostat 3 intermediate its ends by means of a screw 21 or its equivalent which passes through the hole 25 in the body, while the head portion removes the rod some distance from the solenoid 0 and places the end of the foot 23 over a portion of the front face of the rheostat.
From the end of the foot portion 23 of the lever20 depends a trigger 26 having a toe 27 formed from the lower end thereof and projecting inwardly at right angles thereto, said toe projecting into the path of travel of the dog 28 having holes 29 therein, whereby said dog may be secured by means of screws or their equivalent to the cross-head 4- and to the outer face of said dog is se-' cured a block or facing of insulating material 30.
The operation of the device 1s as fol- The contacts 8 and 9 are in such position that when the main switch 41 is closed, the solenoid 10 is energized, thereby closing the switch 12, and placing the low speed motor in operation. As more speed is desired the cross-head a is stepped down gradually, thus cutting out a portion of the resistance of the rheostat, and when at a certain position the contacts 8 and 9 will close the circuit through the solenoid 11 and close the switch 13, thus starting the operation of the high speed motor.
The downward movement of the crosshead 4 is controlled by the armature 49 coacting with the rack 50 on the plunger 5 and said armature is actuated by a magnet 51 receiving current from the source of supply through wires 52 and 53 one of which, as 53, includes a push button switch 54. The control of the downward movements of the cross-head, as above described, is that generally used with printing press controllers and is described in patent 663,491, dated December 11, 1900.
iVhen the switch 13 is closed, the upwardly projecting finger 17 will follow the movable part of said switch because of the weight in the locking device between the pivot points 16 and 25, causing the foot 23 to be raised and the too 27 to be thrown outward,out of the path of travel of the dog 28, thus permitting the cross-head 4 to continue its intcrniittcnt downward movement, for cutting out the resistance of the rheostat.
Shortly after the closing of the switch 13, the contacts 8 will be in such a position upon the contacts 9 as to cut out the current passing through the solenoid 10, thereby permitting the switch 12 to open and stop the operations of the low speed motor] If for any reason the switch 13 is not closed, the movable portion of said switch will rest upon the upwardly projecting finger 17 or the block of insulating material carried thereby, thus holding down the short end of the straight lever 1.4:. which through the medium of the rod 19, the lever 20 and the depending trigger 26 will hold the too 27 in the path of travel of the dog 28 carried by the cross-head 1, and if for any reason said cross-head is lowered, the dog 28 will engage the toe 27 and prevent said crosshead 4; from moving downward beyond the too 27, or in other words it will cause the cross-head 4 to be locked to prevent the reduction of resistance in the rhcostat.
In actual practice, it has been found that where a press controller is not provided with my mechanical locking device, the switch 12 may be closed which will cause the low speed motor to be operated and the resistance ontirely cut out of the rheostat without closing the switch 13 and starting the high speed motor, because some part, such as the set of contacts 8 have not worked properly.
If only the low speed motor is running, and all or the greater portion of the resistance cut out of the rheostat, and because of some reason such as the jarring of the ma chinery, the contacts 8 are caused to operate, the machinery which is running at a low speed, will he suddenly operated at a very high speed, often causing accidents with enormous lOSs of property and life, but by using my improved mechanical locking device, this cannot happen, for the switch 13 must be closed before the toe 27 is removed from the path of travel of the dog 28 carried by the cross-head 4, and unless said too 27 is removed from. the path of travel of the dog, the cross-head i. cannot be operated to reduce the resistance of the rheostat.
After the current is turned off, the solenoid 6 may be energized to return to crosshead f to its normal raised position, and when being raised, the dog 28 will cam the toe 27 out of its way as will be readily understood.
Of course I do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction as herein shown as these may be aried within the limits of the appended claims without dcparting from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, i:'-s-
1. In a mechanical locking device for press controllers, the combination of a rheo stat having a cross-head, a switch, a dog mounted upon the cross-head, a lever comprisinga body, an integral head lying at an angle thereto, a foot at right angles to the body at the opposite end thereof, a depending trigger carried bythe end of the foot, a toe formed from the free end of the trigger and arranged to be disposed in or removed from the path of travel of the dog, and means connected with the head of the lever and controlled by the movements of the switch for actuating the toe of the trigger.
2. In a mechanical locking device for press controllers, the combination of a rheostat having a cross-head, a switch, a dog mounted upon the cross-head, a lever comprising a body, an integral head lying at an angle thereto, a foot at right angles to the body at the opposite end thereof, a depending trigger carried by the end of the foot, a toe formed from the free end of the trigger and arranged to be disposed in or removed from the path of travel of the dog, a straight lever, and a rod connecting one end of said straight lever with the head of the first named lever, said straight lever being controlled by the operations of the switch for actuating the toe of the trigger.

d. In a mechanical locking device for press controllers, the combination of a rheostat having a cross-head, a switch, a dog mounted upon the cross-head, a lever pivoted to the rheostat comprising a body, an integral head lying at an angle thereto, a foot at right angles to the body at the opposite end thereof, a depending trigger carried by the end of the foot, a toe formed from the free end of the trigger and arranged to be disposed in or removed from the path of travel of the dog, a straight lever pivoted adjacent one end thereof, a rod connecting the levers, an upwardly projecting finger carried by the straight lever and provided with a facing of insulating material, said finger adapted to contact with the mo able portion of the switch, whereby the operations of the straight lever are controlled to actuate the toe of the trigger.
5. A mechanical locking device comprising a lever adapted to be pivoted and provided with a foot at right angles thereto, a depending trigger provided with a toe at right angles thereto carried by the outer end of the foot, :1 straight lever provided with a screw receiving opening, and means for connecting one end to said lever with that end of the other lever opposite the foot.
6. A mechanical locking device compris ing a lever adapted to be pivoted and pro vided with a foot at right angles thereto, a depending trigger provided with a toe at right angles thereto carried by the outer end of the foot, a straight lever provided with a screw receiving opening, and a rod con-- necting that end opposite the foot of the first named lever with one end of the straight lever.
7. A mechanical locking device comprising a lever adapted to be pivoted and provided with a foot at right angles thereto, a depending trigger provided with a toe at right angles thereto carried by the outer end of the foot, a straight lever provided with a screw receiving opening, a rod connecting that end opposite the foot of the first named lever with. one end of the straight lever, and a finger carried by the opposite end of the straight lever.
8. A mechanical locking device comprising a lever adapted to be pivoted and provided with a foot at right angles thereto, a depend ing trigger provided with a toe at right angles thereto carried by the outer end of the foot, a straight lever provided with a screw receiving opening, a rod collecting that end opposite the foot of the first named lever with one end of the straight lever, a finger carried by the opposite end of the straight lever and projecting upwardly therefrom, and block of insulating material carried by said finger.
9. The combination with a motor a rheostat in the motor circuit having a movable part adapted to descend by gravity for cutting out the resistance, and a switch controlled by the movements of the movable part of the rheostat for opening the circuit through the motor with which the rheostat is connected, of means controlled by the movements of said switch to prevent the descent of the movable part of the 'rheostat beyond a predetermined point until said switch is closed.
10. In a mechanical locking device for press controllers, the combination with a rheostat havin a cross-head, a motor connected with said rheostat and a switch controll ed by the movements of the cross-head for opening and closing the circuit through the motor, of a dog mounted upon the crosshead, a trigger arranged to be disposed in or removed from the path of travel of the dog and means connected with said trigger for actuating the same, said means being controlled by the movements of said switch.
11. In a mechanical locking device for press controllers, the combination with a rheostat having a cross-head, means for permitting the intermittent descent of said crosshead, a motor connected with said rheostat and a switch controlled by the movements of the cross-head for starting and stopping the motor, of a dog mounted upon the cross-head, a lever, a trigger depending therefrom provided with a toe arranged to be disposed in or removed from the path of travel of the dog and means connected with said lever and controlled by themovements of said switch for actuating the trigger.
12. The combination with a rheostat, a co-acting cross-head, a motor and a switch controlled by the movement of the cross head for starting and stopping the motor,

18. In a mechanical locking device for press controllers. the combination with a rheostat, a coacting cross-head, electrically operated means for permitting the intermittent descent of the cross-head, a high speed motor a low speed motor, said motors bein connected with the rheostat and switches controlled by the movements of the crosshead for starting and stopping the motors, of means actuated by the switch controlling the high speed motor to prevent the descent of the cross-head beyond a predetermined point until said last mentioned switch is closed.
