To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatl, James O. REYNOLDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Evansville, county of Vanderburg, and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Hand and Bench Vises, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to combination hand and bench vises.
One object of my invention is the provision of a combined hand and bench vise comprising a clamp of improved construction adapted to be applied to a bench or table, and a vise adapted to be detachably engaged with the clamp, whereby the hand vise may be used alone, or, it may be quickly and easily attached to .the clamp and used as a bench vise. In that connection, I provide improvements in the clamp, and a hand vise having a novel construction of jaw adapted to directly, and detachably, engage or interlock with the clamp to form a secure connection therebetween without interfering with the operation of the vise.
Another obj ect of the invention is the provision of a novel vise embodying jaws, a wedge plate, shank, and thumb screw, con structed and combined in a novel manner whereby the jaws may be set at an angle to admit and hold tapering materials, or, can be arranged with their gripping faces parallel to hold, square stock. Furthermore, these improvements rovide for an adjustable fulcrum for the aws which, combined with the handle for adjusting the wedge plate, and the clamping thumb screw, provides a compound leverage on the jaws, resulting in a more powerful grip on the material being held than with the old style of aws.
The invention embodies further improvements and novel combination of parts appearing more fully hereinafter and shown in the accompanying drawings. The disclosure of the invention is to be considered as illustrative, rather than restrictive, of the scope thereof, as modifications may be resorted to without departing from the essential principles of the device.

My invention may be used as a-hand vise, or, as a bench vise. It is shown arranged for use as a bench vise in Figs. 1 and 2 and comprises, generally, a clamp 1 and a vise 2. The clamp 1 has a thumb screw 3 provided with aball-swiveled head 4: adapted to be pressed against the bench 5 to hold the clamp 1 thereon. The vise 2 is attachable the clamp 1. To enable the clamp and vise to be quickly and easily combined, or, disconnected, there is provided in the clamp a vertical slot 6 which tapers from its upper end 7 to its lower end 8. The slot. is undercut or dovetailed as shown at 9. A channel or'slot 10 runs froin the lower face of the clamp into the lower end portion of the slot 6.
The vise has a pair of jaws 11 which are substantial duplicates. They areprovided with inclined slots 12 in their inner faces and have seats or concavities 13 below their tops. One of the jaws is screw-threaded at lat and the other has a plain aperture 15 and is provided on its outer face with concavity the wedge 16. A thumb screw 17 has its blank portion 18 passing freely through the opening 15 and its screw-threaded portion 19 engaged with the screw-threads 14. By turning this screw the jaws may be advanced toward each other. These .springs, by their tendency to expand, press the jaws 1'1 apart, when permitted by the un-screwing of the thumbscrew l7.
Slidable'on a blank portion'of the shank or stem 22 is a wedge plate 30 whose edges 31 slope upwardly and are received in the slots or channels 12 of the jaws. The wedge plate is provided with a tubular central portion 32 where it is slidably mounted on the blank portion of the shank 22. In the lower edge of the wedge plate 30 is a cutout portion 33 in which is received .a cup The handle 35 is. provided with a ferrule 36 which isdastened thereto at 37 and ha internal screw-thread 38 engaged with the screwrthreaded portion 23 of the shank 22. Thehandle 35 is hollow to permit the free entry of the screw-threaded part 23thereinto. A spring 39 surrounds the stem 22 and is seated in the cup 34 and in a concavity 40 in the upperface of the ferrule or nut 36. tension or the spring 39 need only be sufiiciently trong to support the wedge plate 30 and keep it from falling down. The adjustment of the wedge plate up and down on the blank portion of the shank '22 is accom lished byturning the handle 35 while hol mg the jaws in the hand. By turning the handle 35 in one direction, there is a tendency to compress the spring 39 and conly the adjustment is transmitted through the spring to the wedge plate, elevating it. The reverse turning of the handle 35 relieves the wedge plate will then descend by gravity, The purpose of changing the position of the Wedge plate 30 is to vary the point of application of the .tulcrums 4:1 to the jaws 11 to thereby increase or diminish the gripplng action of the jaws on the piece of work being-held by them. Furthermore, the adjustment of the wedge plate accomplishes a actlon on the jaws and intensifies the gripplng action so that a compound gripping action is obtained by the use of the wedge plate and its adjusting means in connection with the gripping action had by turning the thumb-screw 17. Another important result obtained is that,
