LINUS S. MASON, OF MIDDLEFIELD CENTER, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN HOISTING APPARATUS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 126,222, dated April 30, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LINUS S. ll/IASON, of
Middlefleld Center, in the county of Otsego which my invention is fully illustrated.
The object of my invention is more especially to facilitate the storing of hay in a barn or other storehouse to receive hay or grain and straw, as it is usually stored by farmers; but my invention is equally applicable in facilitating the hoisting and placing of almost any weight which it may be desirable to handle with a hoisting-tackle; and my said invention consists in the use of a traveling tackle block or blocks arranged to run on a suitable track, and carried forward at a given time by means of an adjustable clamp fitted on the fall of the tackle, and backward to its proper hoisting position by means of a counter-balance properly applied for that purpose.
The following description will enable any one skilled in the arts to whichmy invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the drawing and the letters of reference marked thereon.
LetArepresent the ridge-pole of the roof of the buildings; 0 O (J, &c., the rafters; and B B, the post or gable ends of the same.
Now, to apply my invention, I first insert a rod of iron, 1), as close under the ridge-pole as practicable, leaving room enough above ,to allow the block J to travel from end to end, if need be, the ends of the rods to be securely fastened in the post B B. Before putting up this rod, however, I make an indentation in it, as shown by c. This indentation should be made about midway or over the weight, as nearly as may be, to be lifted. Having arranged the bloek J upon the track-rod, I attach to it, by any suitable means, a block, I, through which I reeve the tackle-fall G, which is also reeved through the block K, and from thence to the ground or to the power which is to operate it. Having thus arranged these blocks and fall, I apply to the latter a clamp, H, which is adjustablethat is to say, it may be shoved up or down on the fall, and fastened at any given point. Now, suppose the weight M to be raised, the clamp H, when it strikes the block I, will draw the block J forward on the track-rod D toward the block K, thus carrying the weight to the left, as far as may be desired, before dropping or delivering it, the position of the clamp H on the fall, of course, regulating the height to which the weight is to be raised before it moves horizontally. After the weight has been delivered it is necessary to get the block J back to the notch in the rod D. This I do by means of a counter-balance, 0, attached to an ordinary block and fall, E F, to the block J, the weight 0 being just heavy enough to overcome the friction and weight of the hoisting-tackle after the weight is discharged and the power releases it. The counterbalancing fall, however, may be used, in case of need, to draw the weight back more or less, in case the power shall have carried it too far forward.
Having now described the nature and operation of my invention, I claim as new herein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent The adjustable clamp H, in combination with the fall and the traveling blocks I and J, the whole to be arranged and operated on the notched rod 1), in relation to each other, as set forth.
