COMBINED CHAIR AND. BED.
Specicaton of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 9, 1.918.
Application led March 31, 1916.` Seria'l'No. 87,959.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, WILLIAM V. SLAGK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Franklin, in the county of Johnson and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Chairs and Beds, of which the following is a specification. 1
My invention relates to improvements in a combined chair or chairs and bed, and has particular reference to means whereby two separate chairs may be assembled in a convenient and expeditious manner, to form a bed, and securely retained in this assembled relation.
An important object of the invention is to provide apparatus of the above mentioned character, which is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, convenient in use, strong. and durable.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a chair, embodying the invention, showing the hinged side and arm moved to the open position,
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of two chairs assembled to form a bed,
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the apparatus, showing the chairs assembled to form a bed,
Fig. 4 is a detail section through the pivoted side of the chair, showing the hinge connection, and,
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary front elevation of one chair, having the hinged arm in the closed position.
In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numerals 5 and 6 designate normally separate chairs, which are substantially identical. Each chair 5 and 6 comprises a back-portion 7 having legs 8, as shown. The numeral 9 designates a stationary side portion of the chair, which is rigidly secured to the back-portion 7. The side portion 9 is provided with depending legs 10, having feet 10', to contact with the floor. Carried by the Lipper end of each side portion 9 is an arm 11, as shown.
The numeral 12 designates a swinging side portion, substantially identical with the side portion 9. One leg 10 of the side portion 12 is-pivotally connected with the leg 8of the back-portion 7'by meansof hinges-13, as shown.
Arranged between-or withinthe side por-` tions 9and 12, when assembled, is` a frame 14, comprising longitudinal strips land 16, connectedby transverse strips 17. The longitudinal strip 16 is rigidly secured tofthe back-portion 7 andV one end of the strip-15 isrigidly secured to the-leg 10 of the side portion 9.v
' The longitudinal strip- 15 of the chair 5 carriesV pins 18, rigidly secured thereto and adapted for removable insertion within openings 19 formed in the leg 10 ofthe side portion 12' of'this chair.
The chair 6 hasits -strip 15 `provided with openings 21, to removably receive pins 22 rigidly secured to the leg 10 of the side portion 12 thereof. The openings 21 are also adapted to'removablyreceive thev pins 18 ofthe chair 5.
In Fig. 8, the chair 5 is shown as provided with hooks 23, arranged inwardly of the strips 15 and 16 and loosely pivoted thereto, and these hooks are adapted for insertion within eyes 24, secured to corresponding strips of the chair 6. It is thus apparent that these hooks and eyes detachably lock the chairs together when assembled. The side portion 12 of the chair 5 is preferably provided upon its inner side with an eye 25, to receive the hook 23, while the side portion 12 of the chair 6 carries a hook 26 to engage with the eye 24, secured to the strip 15 of the chair 6, as shown in Fig. 5.
In the use of the apparatus, when the hinged side portion 12 of each chair is swung forwardly the pins carried by the front strip or side portion serve to connect the side portion with the forward strip, while the hooks and eyes may be employed to securely lock the side portion in place. It is thus apparent that the chairs are wholly separate and may be used independently of each other.
When it is desired to assemble the chairs to provide a bed, the side portions 12 are disconnected from the forward strips 15 and swung rearwardly to assume a position at substantially a right angle to the chairs and rearwardly of the same, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. The chairs are then brought into contact with each other, the pins 18 of the strip 15 of the chair 5 extending into the openings 21 of the strip 15 in the chair 6.
The hooks and eyes are manipulated to lock the chairs together.
ln the drawings, I have not shown the upholstering of the chairs and it is to be understood that the same may be secured to the bottom frames 14C in any well known or preferred manner.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
A combined chair and bed, comprising a pair of substantially identical chairs, each chair comprising a substantially horizontal bottom iframe, a relatively stationary side member extending above and below the bottom frame for a substantial distance and rigidly and permanently secured thereto, a relatively stationary back portion rigidly and permanently attached to the bottom frame and extending above the same for a substantial distance, and a swinging side member extending above and below the bottom trame for a substantial distance; hinge means connecting the swinging side member and back portion and having its pivot disposed at the inner substantially vertical corner of the swinging side member and the yrear substantially vertical corner of the back portion whereby the swinging side member may normally assume a position with its inner side substantially contacting with the end of the back portion and be swung to a rear position wholly out of the way of said end of the back portion with its end substantially contacting with the rear side of the back portion; and means for locking the swinging side members to the bottom trames when in the forward positions, said means also serving to lock the adjacent inner ends of the bottom frames together when such ends are disposed in substantial contacting relation. y
In testimony whereof I atBX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
