Application filed November 6, i917. Serial No. 260,593.
T/;,\,`|., l f v J. i ein, nai e intent 1oi'ements in nuttons, of Winch j is a full, clear, and exact of i-.eiv useful in the follow scription.
rfhis invention-rela to improvements in buttons, the object bei to provide an i expensive button consi Jing partly of met and partly of lather, imitation-leather or even fabric, and so constructed that an einn bossed design or emblem will keep its shape during Wear notwithstanding that the faeing or top surface of the button is not made of metal, such embossed buttons heretofore having, so far as am aware` been made with metal facings or tops. TWith my improvement l can produce buttons for uniforms or military purposes with the saving of the metal which is usually employed as the facing of such buttons, and furthermore, a button constructed in accordance with my improvement can be manufactured more cheaply than button made entirely of metal, and besides, the embossed upper sar-- face of my non-metal facing for the button will not be subject to corrosion, as is frequently the case with metal buttons.
l will new proceed to describe my inifention more in detail, the nofel features of which l Will point out in the appended claims, reference being` had to the accompanying drawing, forming part hereof, whereinifigure l is an enlarged sectional view of a button constructed in accordance with my invention Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof; and
lFig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view of the ornamental embossed facing or coveringfor the button and its backing-member.
My improved button consists of a shelllike member e, an inserted shell-like can member 5, an ornamental facing 6, and a backing therefor, indicated by 7. An eye to secure the button to a garment is indicated by 8.
@ne of the main features of my improved button is the facing 6, Which is preferably made of leather or leatheroid, .but i do not limit myself to this `particular material, any fabric, other than Ametal, that ceL be embossed,ll will serve for tne facing in' f im a is the said facing 6 is preferably embossed, l utilize in connection therewith the backing element "47, Twhich may be made of cardboard or the like, in fact, said backing is preferably made of cardboard or similar stiflfening material. lVithont the backing element 7 the facing 6 could not be embosse/J so as to retain its embossed d i gn g the back* ing' serves to maintain the said embossing, as the facing` (i Will be mas-ie ont relatively thin material, such as a tree-.ted fa im Wn' as leatheroid. as fer as l am awa am the first to produce button having a fabric facing which is embossed and a means to maintain the embossing or baci: it up so that it cannot be flattened er destroyed by pressure from Without.
As can be seen in l, the edge of the facing 6 is caught between the fianffes of the button members l and 5. rlie racing will be applied daring the assembling of the members l and 5. The embossing of the facing is indicated bY 9. Any desi@ ma i 71 van 1y be employed, the raised portion n icafed by Y of aniy 9 being representative sort.
T he baclriiig 7 will be or otherwise secured to the facing 6.
t Will of course be understood that the backing 7 will be an alied to the facing before the embossing is done.
@f course it Will be obvious that the members 4: and 5 may be secured together in any suitable manner1 other than in the particular Way shown in the drawing.
What l. claim as my invention is:
l. A button consisting of a shell-like base member, a shell-like cap-member adapted to be forced into the base member` a facinff for said cap-member, the edge of said facing being held between the [ianges of the base and cap-members, and a backing for said facing, located between the cap member` and said facino.
2. A button consisting of a shell-like basemember, a shell-like cap-member, facing for said cep-memben tbe edge of said facing being held between the flanges of the base and cap-members and a backing for said facing` located between the cap-member and said facing.
3. A button comprising two members a flexible and embossed facing in one 'piece covering the Whole front of the button and banking'. idf relatiyely sbifer material held eraoly cemented inner surface of Ving the entire front of the button and additional means for maintaining the embossing. 5. A button having an embossed fabric facing and a backing of cardboard or equivalent non-metallic relatively rigid material formaintaining the embossing said facing and said backing being each'in one piece and covering the entire front of the button.
6v. A biitton having an embossed fabric facing in one piece covering the entire front ofthe button and means for maintaining the embossing. r
7. A button having an embossed fabric facing in one piece coveringV the entire front of the biitton, a backing therefor of relatively stiffer material for maintaining the embossing and a more rigid member behind said backing. l
8. A button having a facing of embossed fabric a backing of stiffer material for maintaining theembossing, and still more rigid material behind this stier material holding the said backing against the said facing.
