NitTiEZE snares PAT-E1 canton.
JOHN ZUKIWSKI, OF ISSPAS, ALBERTA, CANADA, ASSIGNOR 0F ONE-SIXTH T0 FI JLI'JOTEI WAKALIUK;
CLEVIS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 9, 1918.
Application filed December 28, 1917. Serial No. 209,289.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN ZUKIWSKI, a subject of the King of England, residing at Isspas, in the Province of Alberta, and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clevises, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to clevises and has special reference to clevises such as are used for farm implements, chains and the like.
One important object of the invention is to improve the general construction of devices of this description.
A second important object of the invention is to provide an improved form of clevis adapted to fit varying thicknesses of equalizers or doubletrees.
lVith the above and other objects in view, as will be hereinafter apparent the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a clevis constructed in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the toggle end of the toggle bolt.
In the embodiment of the invention herein illustrated there is shown in the drawings a clevis which constitutes a J-shaped body 10 and there is provided an eye 11 at the end of the longer limb 12 of this body, the axis of this eye intersecting a prolongation of the axis of the shorter limb 13. A post 14: extends from the extremity of the shorter limb parallel to the axis of the eye 11 and in a direction away from the limb 12, the post being threaded, as at 15, at its extremity. In order to make the two limbs of equal length there is provided a link 16 having an eye 17 at each end. One of these eyes is threaded and engages on said post. Now by means of this construction the link bar 17 may be moved by rotation on the threaded post from or toward the longer limb 12 in accordance with the equalizer or other bar which the clevis is adapted to fit. Through the remaining eye 17 and the eye 11 passes a bolt 20 which is used to connect the clevis to the equalizer or other member and at one end of this bolt 20 is pivoted a toggle 21 arranged with beveled faces to aline with the bolt 20 as shown in Fig. 3. Surrounding the bolt 20 is a compression spring 22 which is positioned between the eye 11 and the head 23 of the bolt so that the toggle, when in the position shown in Fig. 1 is prevented from working loose. It will be obvious that this clevis is applied in the usual manner to the swingletree or other element and the bolt passed through the eyes 11 and 17 and the toggle turned down. The spring 22 will serve to hold the parts in position.
There has thus been provided a simple and efhcient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.
t is obvious that many minor changes may be made in the form and construction of the invention without departing from the material principles thereof. It is not therefore desired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described but it is wished to include all such as properly come within the scope claimed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is l. A clevis comprising a J-shaped body member having an eye at the end of its longer limb, the axis of the eye intersecting the axis of the shorter limb prolonged, a post extending from the extremity of the shorter limb parallel to the axis of said eye and in a direction away from the longer limb, the said post being threaded, a link bar having an eye at each end, one of said eyes being screwed on said post, and a bolt passing through the remaining eye of the link bar and the first-menti ned eye.
2. A clevis comprising a J-shaped body member having an eye at the end of its longer limb, the axis of the eye intersecting the axis of the shorter limb prolonged, a
