MEANS FOR ATTACHING AND REMOVING DETAGI-IABLE BLADES AND THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 2, 1918.
Application filed November 20, 1916. Serial No. 132,471.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR R. BARNETT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Indianapolis, county of Marion, and State of Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful Means for Attaching and Removing Detachable Blades and the like; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters refer to like parts.
This invention relates to a means for at taching and removing detachable knife blades or the like from a blade holder. It is used in connection with detachable blades which are secured and held in the blade holder by interlocking or frictional means so that it may be slidably attached and removed therefrom.
The chief feature of the invention consists in means for holding the blade while the holder is being attached thereto or removed therefrom, and particularly a member having a slot into which the knife blade is inserted and which has stops at each end thereof for engaging and holding the blade in place while the blade is being attached to or removed from the blade holder, especially when such uniting or separating movement is longitudinal.
The full nature of the invention will be understood from the accompanying drawings and the following description and claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section taken through the attaching and removing device, showing the knife blade and holder in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is the same as Fig. 1, showing the blade partially removed from the holder. Fig. 3 is a cross section on the line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4. is a plan view of the attaching and removing device. Fig. 5 is a central longitudinal section through a modified form. Fig. 6 is an end view of Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a plan view of the modified form. Fig. 8 is a side view of a modified form, adapted to be used for a curved blade and holder. Fig. 9 is an end view of the modified form shown in Fig. 8.
In the drawings there is shown a device for attaching and removing a detachable knife blade 10 from a blade holder 11 which holder.
together form a carving knife, butchers knife or the like. The blade is longitudinally removable from or attachable to said For this purpose the holder has a longitudinal groove 11.1 to receive and hold the blade.
Secured to a base 12 by means of the screws 13, there is a. projecting member ll provided with a slot 15 into which said knife blade is insertible. One end of said projecting member under-cut so as to receive one end, preferably the point, of the blade for retaining it in position, substantially as shown. The other end of said member is adapted to engage the heel end of the blade, thereby acting as a stop and holding it while the blade holder is being withdrawn longitudinally and rcarwardly therefrom.
Figs. 5, 6 and 7 Show a modified form having a block 112 provided with a longitudinal groove 114 into which the blade is adapted to be inserted. The screws 20 are screwed into said block and secure it in position while being attached to or removed from the blade holder.
Figs. 8 and 9 show a second modified form adapted to be used for curved blades, which is provided with a curved member 212 with a fibrous filler 213 and having outwardly extending longitudinal flanges 214 which are separated from each other and bolted in po sition by the bolts 220 which also act as stops to engage the ends of the removable blade 210 to engage or disengage it from the blade holder 211.
The operation of the device is as follows: If it is desired to attach the knife blade to the blade holder, the blade is inserted in the slot so that it will be held therein. The holder is then placed in position to slide longitudinally and forwardly on said blade until said blade is entirely inserted therein, when the holder and blade thus united may be lifted from the slot. By reversing the operation, the blade may be removed from the holder by inserting the blade in the slot so that it is held therein at both ends, and withdrawing the holder longitudinally.
The invention, however, is not limited to the longitudinal movement of the blade holder, or the blade and holder may be united or separated by movement otherwise than longitudinal. While a knife blade is herein shown, a blade with saw teeth or any other edge may be similarly attached to and removed from a blade holder by the device herein shown.
The invention claimed is:
1. Means for attaching and removing a detachable blade holder from the blade, comprising a sheet metal member having parts thereof arranged to form a longitudinal slot in the top thereof into which said blade may be inserted, and a stop adjacent each end of the slot for engaging the ends of the bladeto hold the same against longitudinal movement while the holder is being engaged with or disengaged from the blade,
said stops being under-cut for engagement.
with the pointed end of Said blade.
2. Means for attaching and removing detachable knife blades or the like from a blade holder, comprising a sheet-metal memher having parts thereof extended upwardly, said upwardly extending portions having a slot in which the blade can be placed lengthwise thereof, one end of said slot being under-cut to engage the pointed end of said blade and the other end provided with a stop whereby the blade will be held while said holder is longitudinally moved into or Copies of this patent may be obtained for withdrawn from holding engagement with the blade.
3. Means for attaching and removing detachable blades from a blade holder, including a wooden base, an upwardly projecting metal member secured to said base, and a 1011- gitudinal slot in said member in whichthe blade may be inserted, one end of said slotbeing under-cut to engage the pointed end of said blade and the other end of said slot adapted to act as a stop, whereby the blade will be held while said holder is longitudinally moved into or withdrawn from holding engagement with the blade.
4c. Means for attaching and removing detachable blades from a blade holder, including a wooden base, a sheet metal member having a longitudinal slot in the top thereof into which said blade may be inserted so as to be held longitudinally by the ends thereof while the holder is withdrawn therefrom, and longitudinal flanges on each side of said member for securing it to the base.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto affixed my signature.
ARTHUR R. BARNETT.
