To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLrAM T NOAKES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Ida, in the county of Montgomery and State of Arkansas, have invented certain useful Improvements in Farm-Gates, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to farm gates and particularly to that class of gates adapted to be closed and opened by an operator from the seat of a vehicle or the body of a horse so that the necessity for dismounting will be obviated.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide an eflicient durable and inexpensive gate mechanism which will serve the purpose intended and so constructed that the gate latch may be released slightl'v in advance but substantially simultaneous with the initial swinging movement of the gate.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be specifically referred to hereinafter, it being understood that changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a front elevational view of a gate and operating mechanism constructed in accordance with my invention.

Suitable distances apart are lever posts or standards 5 and 6 on which are pivoted the manually operated levers 7 and 8, the upper ends of which are provided with a connector 9 which may consist of a wire, cable, or link connection. The lower ends of the levers 7 and 8 being reduced to provide hand holds 10 and 11. Midway the standards 5 and 6 is a pivot post 12 in front of and to one side of which is a hinge post 13 to which the gate 14 may be secured by hinges 15 and 16. Alined with the post 13 is a latch post 17 provided with a keeper 18 to receive the pivoted latch bar 19 secured to the rear post of the gate in any well known manner but permitted to tilt in a vertical direction. An actuating member for the latch bar 19 consists of a rocking member, and of a rock shaft 20 secured to the top rail 22 of the gate by the keepers 23 and 24 in which the rock shaft portion 25 is journaled. On one end of the rockshaft 25 is an upstanding arm 26, adapted to projectbeyond the top of the gate and from the other end of the rock shaft 25 is an elbow arm 27 having a terminal eye 28 to which is secured a link connection 29 fastened to the latch bar 19. 30 is a notch or cutout portion through which the elbow arm may project to the side of the gate opposite that on which the upstanding arm 26 is provided. The arm 26, the rocking shaft 25 and the elbow arm may all be constructed of a single piece of rod metal and formed by bending if desired. In the top bar of the gate is an upstanding pin or-projection 31 received between the bifurcated end of the lever 32 pivoted on the post. 12. The bifurcated end of the lever 32 comprising the spaced fingers 33 and 34 receives the upstanding pin 31 between 'them and th finger 3-1 is adapted to bear against the upstanding arm 36 of the gate actuator. The pivoted lever 32 is connected to the levers 7 and '8 by a connector shown as a rod 35 terminally secured to said levers 7 and 8 below the pivot points thereof and intermediate its ends 36 to the lever 32.
Assuming the gate to be closed and in the event that it is to be opened the operator will move either of the lower ends of the levers 7 and 8 from left to right so that the finger 3% contacts with the arm 26 slightly in advance of the contact of the finger 33 with the upstanding projection 31. When the finger 34 presses against the upstanding arm 26, said arm will be moved from left to right so as to impart a rocking motion to the portion 25 of the latch actuator which in turn will raise the free end of the elbow arm and through the link raise the latch bar out of engagement with the keeper 18. The finger 33 then contacts with the projection 31 so as to swing the gate on its hinges into an open position and at substantially right angles to the gate post 12. In view of the fact that the gate is hinged at one side of the rear post to the gate post 12 and in view of the fact that the actuating lever is eccentric to the hinged portion of the gate sufficient leverage will be provided to permit of an easy swinging of the gate into an open position or back into a closed position.
If the gate is open and it is desired to close it, it will only be necessary to swing the lower portion of the'levers from right to left causing the inner edge of the finger 34 to come into contact with the upstanding projection 81 so that pressure will be applied in advance of the hinge and the gate will be swung into closed position. Inasa much as no pressure will at this time be exerted against the upstanding arm 26 and in view of the fact that the normal tend ency of the latch is to drop by gravity, it
occupant of a vehicle or a rider dismounting from the horse in order to swing the gate. It will also be apparent that the gate may be efficiently operated from either side of the fence and that the release of the latch will be insured before pressure is applied to the gate before opening it.
In addition to the operating levers 7 and 8 I have provided another lever 37 which is pivotallyinounted on a post 38 arranged adjacent the house and also arranged in connection with the lever 8 through the medium of wires 89 the respective terminals of which are connected to the adjacent ends of the levers 37 and 8. By this arrangement it will be readily apparent that when one of the occupants of the house observes a vehicle approaching the gate to avoid the driver of the vehicle any additional trouble, the gate may be readily operated in the manner described by actuating the lever 37;
Having thus described my invention what I claim is In a manually operated gate, the combination of a gate post, a latch post, a gate connected for horizontal swinging movement to the gate post, an upstanding pin onthe upper bar of the gate, a latch bar pivoted to the inner end of the gate for vertical swinging movement and designed for removable engagement with the latch post, a lever post, a lever pivoted for horizontal swinging movement on the lever post and having its outer end bifurcated and straddled about the pin, a shaft rockably mounted longitudinally of said gate, a laterally extending arm formed on the outer end of the shaft, a connection having one end loosely engaged with the outer end of the arm and the other end secured to the latch bar, an upright pin projecting from the inner end of the shaft and positioned at one side of the gate in proximity to the other pin 80 as to be engaged by the lever to assure of the rocking of the shaft and the raising of the latch bar, and means for swinging the lever to consequently raise the latch bar and swing the gate.
