Specification of letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 2, 391%.
Application filed January 19, 1916. Serial No. 72,878.
1 '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAXIMILIAN CHARLES SoHwmNnRT, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in West Hoboken, in-
the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Valve-Caps and Pump-Couplings, of which the following is a specification. k
This invention relates to pneumatic tire or similar valves, and aims to provide certain improvements therein.
The standard pneumatic tire valve is usually provided with a cap adapted on one side to screw down over the valve casing andhaving a packing designed to make a tight joint with the end of the casing. In axial alinement' therewith is usually provided a screw-driver projection by means of which the common valve insides may be inserted into and removed from the casing. Accordin to, the resent invention I providea va ve cap of this type which has an additional function of serving as a pump coupling, by means of whichthe pump may be connected with the valve casing. Ordinarily such a function is not necessary, since pump couplings are usually adapted to screw directly on the casing when the valve cap is removed. Many ump couplings are, however, (and particu arly abroad) constructed to screw overa much smaller valve' nipple than is usual in connection with the standard Schrader valve, so thatthe pump is, not fitted for direct application to the valve casing. It is necessary in such cases to provide a supplementary pump coupling in order to fit such pumps for this use. Such supplementary pump couplings are apt to be lost or mislaid and one of the ob jects of the present invention is to provide a coupling of this character which will be a art of the valve cap, which latter is always in place upon the valve except during inflation or deflation.
In the drawings wherein I have illustrated several forms of the invention,-
Figure 1 is a diametrical section of a cap constructed according to the present invention, the cap being shown in connection with .any leakage through a pump and valve, and being in position to act as a coupling member.
Fig. 2 is an elevation of the. cap looking from left in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a similar elevation, looking from the right.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view of another form of cap.
5 is a top view of Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 is a sectional view of another form ofcap.
Fig. 7 is a sectional view of still another form.
Referring first to Figs. 1 to 3, let A indicate the capas a whole having a screwthreaded recess B adapted to fit over the end of a standard valve C. D is a packing adapted to make a tight joint with the top face E of the valve casing and thus prevent the casing. Axially opposlte the recess B is a screw-driver proect1on F which is adapted to enter the casing and to be used as atool to unscrew the valve insides G. At the side of the cap is provlded a screw-threaded projection H which is adapted to be connected to a couplingpiece I of a pump tube J. When the coupling piece I is constructed for engagement with a valve nipple which is of different dimensions from the nipple C, the projection H will correspond in its dimensions. As shown, the coupling piece is intended primamly for a much smaller nipple than C, and consequently the projectionH will correspond to the dimensions of such nipple. In the construction shown the projection H has a tapered end K, and the coupling piece I has a tapered seat L for forming an approximately tight joint with the projection. On the opposite side of the cap is provided a projection M which is of proper dimensions to enter within the nipple C of the standard valve (or it may be to screw over the exterior of such nipple) and a packing such as N is provided for bearing against the upper face E of the nipple for forming a tight joint therewith. Between the projection H and the projection M is a passage, such as 0, adapted to conduct air from the pump tube to the valve.

A combined cap and inflation coupling In Fig. 7 the pump projection H is comprising a part aving a recess form 35 located as in Fig. 6, as is also the screwwith an internal screw-thread and having a driver rojection F".
