CHARLES J. TROPIPMAN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS. ASSIGNOR T0 IE. A. HARDY & COMPANY,
OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
GOGGLES or. EYE-PROTECTORS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 2, 191%.
Application filed. October 26, 1917. Serial No. 198,633.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES J. TROPPMAN, a citizen of the United States. and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State v of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Goggles or Eye-Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention has reference to protectors for the eyes of workmen and others engaged in divers employment-s, where it is expedient to shade the eyes from bright glare, heat and gaseous emanations of molten metals, acetylene torches, etc., as well as to protect the eyes from flying particles of foreign matter. v
Among the objects of my invention is the provision of a goggle or eye-protector that may be constructed without any metallic portions and provided with suitablesmall slotted openings upon the outer sides of the eye-cups that afi'ord windows or sight openings through which the workman is apprised of any danger which may approach from either side and which is not visible within the range of the lenses in the front of the eye-cups. Another object of my invention is the provision of a novel struc ture for holding the lenses in place in the eye-cups whereby flying particles of. metal or other matter are prevented from lodging in the corners of the lenses and the bezels for securing the same in place, such structure also affording facilities for securing lenses of divers thicknesses'in the eye-cups. A further object is the provision of a novel connection between the adjacent peripheries of the eye-cups. And still other. objects are the provision of a goggle or eye-protector that is dependable in operation, easy to handle and adjust to the eyes of the wearer, and economical to manufacture.
I prefer to accomplish the divers objects of my invention by the means disclosed in the accompanying drawings th at form a part of this specification.
In the drawings- Figural is a front elevation of a pair of goggles constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a side view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a fragmental detail, partly in section, of the means for connecting or bridging the eye-cups.
Fig. 4 is a horizontal section of one of the eye-cups drawn to an exaggerated scale, the section being taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a fragmental view of the eyecups folded together, face to face, and illus trating the manner of inserting the cup-connecting strap through the slotted ears on the sides of the cups.
Referring to the drawings wherein similar reference characters are employed to designate like parts throughout the views, it will be seen my invention preferably comprises a pair of eyecups 10, 10, that are flexibly connected together by a suitable ligament 11. of leather, or the like, and are provided With an elastic head band 12, whereby the goggle may be secured to the head of the wearer. The connecting ligament 11 prefer ably is provided with enlarged ends, as shown, to prevent its accidental removal through the elongated slots 13 made in laterally projecting cars 14, upon adjacent sides of the eye-cups, and in order to readily insert the ligament through these slots, the former is provided with a tapered or pointed portionlo, (as seen in Fig. 5), which is threaded through the slots and by a quick pull is adapted to force one of the enlarged portions through both slots so that this tapered end 15 may be sheared along the dotted line, Fig. 5. after the ligament is in place. The eye-cups are preferably made of a substantially cylindrical shape, the rear edges 16 whereof are shaped tO COIlfOI'III to the contour of the face, as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings, and suitable laterally extended slotted flanges 17 are provided on the edges, opposite ears 14, to which the ends of the head band 12 are secured. Suitable openings or windows are provided in the segments of the eye-cup walls adjacent the flanges 17, to afford means for viewing objects at the side of the wearer and out of range of the lens openings of the cups. These sight openings may be of divers types and I have illustrated a single preferred form that consists of a plurality of elongated slots 18, 18, disposed in a horizontal plane parallel with each other and having their end walls converging inwardly toward each other, as shown 1n the enlarged detail in ment of a plurality of slots disposed parallel with each other.
A suitable bead 19 is formed adjacent the outer edges of the eye'cups and the portions 1O" of the eye-cups extended beyond these beads are exteriorly screw-threaded to v receive internally threaded bezels 20 of the same diameters as the beads against which said bezels are adapted to be snugly fitted. These bezels 20 are preferably of a substantially' L-shape in cross-section andthe lateral portions thereof are under-cut, as at 21 (Fig. 4), in order to make a tight fit with the beveled edges 22 of the lenses 23, that I are positioned against the end edges of the eye-cups. The purpose of beveling the edges of the lenses and undercutting the bezels is to accommodate lenses of divers thicknesses, as illustrated by the dotted lines in Fig. 4, and at the same time to avoid a structure having corners extending forward of the lenses and in which particles of foreign matter may lodge. This has been found necessary, as particles impinging upon the lenses which are not permitted to freely glance therefrom, often crack the lenses.
From the above it will be obvious that I have devised a pair of goggles or eyeprotectors that meet the requirements of persons employed in work in foundries, making castings, hydraulic press work, acetylene and electric welding and cutting, and the like, and although I have disclosed a single form in which my invention may be constructed, it is obvious the device is capable of modification without materially departing from the principle described. I desire it understood, therefore, that all such changes are freely contemplated within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is 1. In goggles or eye-protectors an eye-cup of substantially cylindrical shape, a bezel threaded upon the outer end thereof the lens engaging portion of said bezel being.
undercut, and a lens positioned upon the outer edge of said eye-cup and having a beveled edge adapted to be engaged by the undercut portion of said bezel.
2. In goggles or eye-protectors a pair of substantially cylindrical shaped eye-cups provided with oppositely disposed slotted flanges and a strip of material flexibly connecting said cups, said strip of material having enlarged portions adjacent its ends of greater dimensions thansaid slots and having one end tapered to facilitate'insertion through said slots and which is. adapted to be sheared after the positioningof said strip of material.
3. In goggles or eye-protectors a pair of eye-cups of substantially cylindrical shape and having lenses positioned in their outer ends the walls of said eye-cups provided with horizontally disposed narrow parallel slots whereby the wearers vision may be directed laterally outside the-range of the lenses in the'respective cups.
4. In goggles or eye-protectors a pair of eye-cups of substantially cylindrical shape having their side walls provided with horizontall disposed openings, bezels threaded upon'the outer ends of said eye-cups and having their lens engaging portions undercut, and lenses positioned upon the outer edges of said eye-cups and having beveled edges adapted to be engaged by the undercut portions of said bezels.
5. In goggles or eye-protectors a pair of eye-cups of substantially cylindrical shapehaving their side walls provided with horizontall disposed elongated parallel slots, bezels tdareaded upon the outer ends of said eye-cups and having their lens engaging portions under-cut, and lenses positioned upon the outer edges of said eye-cups and having beveled edges-adapted to be engaged by the under-cut portions of said bezels.
6. In goggles or eye-protectors a pair of eye-cups of substantially cylindrical shape having their side Walls provided with horizontally disposed openings, bezels of substantially L-shape in cross-section threaded upon the outer ends of said eye-cups and having their lateral members under-cut, and lenses positioned upon the outer edges of said eye-cups and having beveled edges adapted to be engaged by the under-cut portions of said bezels.
Signed at Chicago, county of Cook and State of Illinois, this 19th day of October,
