PHILIP H. YAWMAN, or EocHEsrEE, NEW YORK, AssieNoE To YAWMAN a ERBE Eire. co., or EocHEsTEE, NEW YORK, n coEEoEATron or NEW YORK.
LOCK.
To all whom z't may concern.'
Be it known that I, PHILIP H. YAWMAN,
of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and."
State of New York, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Locks; and. l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and .exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this speciiication, and to the referencenumerals marked thereon.
My present invention relates to locks and it has vfor its object to provide a key lock especially adapted for the particular requirements of ling containers whereb in a tumbler lock of the cylinder type the ey may .be withdrawn with the parts in the unlocked position and the same later moved to locked position without Ithe'use of the key. VThe improvements are also directed toward simplicity of design and manufacture and'to theseand other ends the iriventionresides in certain improvements and combinations of parts all as will be hereinafter more fullyl described, the novel' features being pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification. y
Inthe drawings:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through a Ifiling cabinet provided with a f lock constructed" fin accordancewith and illustrating1 one embodimentof my invention" 2 is` an enlargedsectional view "taken L: throughv the lock-with .the plug and keyvinserte'd tadisplace the locking pin;`

Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. "2 but showing the plug rotated toapositionA iny which the key may be withdraw-n, and n Fig. 5 isa ltransverse, sectiontaken 'sub'- tantiallylon they line 5-#5 of Fig. 4.
Similar reference numeralsthioughout the several iigures indicate lthe same parts.
In Fig. 1 is shown a familiar type ofgfil- 1 containing cabinet embodying acasin in a drawer chamber 2 in whlch operates a rawer 3. The drawer is secured in closed position by a pivoted latch 4 entering an Specification of Letters Patent.A i
Application med nay-2i, 1916. ,serial Eb. 99,686.
aperture 5 in the rear wall of thedrawer. -I'Ilhe latch 4 is carried on a vertically movable lock bar 6 which, upon being raised, releases the latch and when in lowered 'position holds the latter ready to snap into engagement with the drawer under the `influence of a spring 7. i
rlhe raising and lowering of the rod 6 is. ac-
complished through therotation of a rod 8 journaled in a bracket 9 secured tothe bottom wallof the chamber 2 and depending therefrom. The rear end of the rod 8 has an eccentric portion 10 journaled in the vertical lock bar 6 and a half rotationof the rod 1n one direction raises the bar while a half rotation in the other direction lowers it.
A key lock that controls 'the rotation 4of the rod 8 is mounted upon a front arm 11 of the bracket 9 and thus the latter and the rod and lock constitute a single locking unit that can readily be applied in assembled contherethrough and joined at its rear end, concentrically, to a coupling sleeve -14 in which the forward end of the rod 8 is secured. The
plug may also extend through the bracket arm' 11 to which the case 12 is'attached and adjacent to this arm 11 the sleeve 14 is provided with a laterally projecting' pin Y 15 that engages stop pins 16 and 17'on the arm to define; the unlocked and locked positions of the plug and lofthe latch 4 .and to limit the rotation of the plug and rod 8 to a `half revolution. f The case 12 and plug 13 are provided with pin: chambers l18 and' 19 in which operate drivers 20' and pins 21, the drivers bein pressed by springs 22. The' chambers 19 an p1ns'21jfintersect a flat keyway 23' extending longitudinally of they plug` 13. When the periphery of the plug' 13, permitting rota tion of the latterl and the release 4ofthe lock.,- Ordinarily, however, when the cham-l bers 18 and 19 are in re tion, the drivers aret rust down past the 4key 24, is inserted, the bits 25 thereof raisel ster in vlocking posiprevents removal o they are held against the walls of the bore plug back to locked position.
in which the plug rotates against any axial v movement until they are again inalinement with the chambers 18 and the yielding drivers 20. This is desirable in most instances perhaps as it prevents the operator from withdrawing the key in the belief that the device is locked when, as a matter of fact, it is unlocked but in the case of filing devices, it is usual to lock the drawers or similar elements up at night but, after unlocking them in the morning, to leave them Aunlocked for the day or while they are to be in constant use. l
I therefore provide in a wall of the case 12 a yielding portion 26 into which the pins 21 may be brought to register after leaving their locking position of register with the chambers 18 and drivers 20 which latter position is shown in Fig. 3. In the present.
instance, this yielding wall consists ofk a block normally pressed against the'periphery of the plug 13 by a spring ring 27 encircling the case 12. Vhen the plug is rotated a half revolution to the unlocked positions of Figs. 4 and 5 and it is sought to remove the key 211 the pins 21 are permitted to ride over tle bits ott the key as they can press outwardly the block 26 which latter, through its spring 27, returns the p'ins flush with the periphery of the plug after the key is out. It is then unnecessary to reinsert the key in order to lock the plu again (though it may be done in .this way lfor I provide an extension 28 on the plug 13 constituting a forwardly projecting knob that can be twirled with the fingers to bring the Once this locked position isv reached, however, it is, of
course, impossible to use' the knob to rotate the plug again until the key has been inserted and the .pins properlywdispla-ceds The yielding wall or member '26 is, inthe present embodiment, arranged diametri-` callyopposite the driver chambers 18 providing for a half rotation of the-Plug to reach van unlocked and" key-withdrawing position but this is because the particular latch mechanism forv the Vdrawer irst described requires this movement. It will be readily seen, however, that a lesser or greater degree of rotation could as easily be provided for. as the yielding portion 26 could be placed at any point on the peripheral path of the plug.
With a filing device locked in the manner Y therein, there being registera above described, an employer may, with one use of his key, unlock the ling device for continuous use during a period at the end of which a clerk or other `person may be re and plug, and pins operating in the chambers, of a key adapted to enter the plug and to displace the pins, the case being formed to allow displacement of the pins and withdrawal of the key after a partial rotation of the plug, means for returning the pins to the position in which they were held by the key, and means independent of the key'fo'r rotating the plug, back to locking position.
2. In a lock, the combination with a case, akey receiving plug rotatable therein?7 there being registerable pin chambers in both case and plug, and` pins operating'in thej chambers, of a key adapted to enter the plug and to displace the pins, the case being formed to allow displacement of the pins andwithdrawal of the key after a partial rotation ofthe plug, means for returning the pins to the position in which they were held by the key, and an extension on the plug independent of the key and forming a knob means of which the plugmay be .rotated back to locking position.
3. In a lock, the combination with a case, a key receiving plug rotatable therein, there being registerable pin chambers in both case and plug, and pins operating in the chambers, of a key. adapted to enter the plug and displace the pins, and a yielding wall in the casing permitting the pins to ride the bits of the key upon withdrawing movement of the latter while the plug isout of locking position, said Wall tending to holdthe pins within the chambers in the Aplug'while in engagement therewith. a. In a lock, the combination with a case, a key receiving plug rotatabletherein, there ybeing registerable pin chambers in both case of 'the key upon withdrawing movement of the latter while the plug is out of locking position, said Wall tending to hold the pins within the chambers of the plug while in engagement therewith, and means independent of the key for rot-ating the plug back to locking position.
5. In a lock, the combination with a c linder case, a key receiving plug rotataiile le pin chambers in both case and plug, and pins operating in the chambers, of a key adapted to enter the plug and displace the pins, a displaceable Wall in the cylinder case permitting the-pins to ride the bits of the key upon 5 Withd the plug is out of locking position, and a spring ring encirclingv the cylinder case to press upon the displaceable well' and hold raWlng movement of the latter While the pinsv within the chambers in the plug While the said Wallis in engagementY there- 10 with.
