.ORNAMENTAL BOX.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH F. KISCH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ornamental Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be vices and more particularly to ornamental receptacles. 7
It is one of the objects of the present invention to provide an improvement in the construction of ornamental receptacles, such for instance as pin trays or button boxes or jewelry boxes, etc., and it is the particu- 't1on as it 1s embodied 1n the form of a box having a receiving chamber and a cover lar object of the present invention to provide an ornamental receptacle in which the sides or outer members thereof are formed of transparent material, preferably glass, and it is an object of the invention to securely fasten the glass sections or members forming the receptacle in such a manner as to effectually cover the jointformed by the abutting edges of the glass panels or sec-V tions, and at thesame time provide for the utilization of the joint-forming means in a manner to cover the line of juncture between the sections and at the same time securely fasten the sections together, and also to provide a joint-forming means which serves 'thefunction and purpose of forming aborder around the marginal portion of the glass or transparent receptacle wall members or sections.
A further object of the present invention is to provide an ornamental receptacleor box and to so 'constructjand arrange the binding elements of the members of the receptacle or box so that the edges of the binding means may be effectually covered so as to conceal the irregular exposed edges of the bindingmeans and at the same time 010- tain an ornamental frame aroundthe marginal portions of the sections in combination with the binding means which'latter form a border substantially concentric to theinner ornamenting frame.
Another object of the present invention is to improve the construction of receptacles :having relatively hinged members so as to not only provide for therelative movement Specification of Letters Patent.

of the members one to the other, but also to form an ornamental connection which serves as a hinge for the two members, and
which hinge further involves a covering means for the joint between the members hinged together.
With these and other objects in view, as will be rendered manifest in the following specification, there is illustrated in the accompanying drawing one embodiment of the invention, in which Figure 1 shows the invention as embodied in a receptacle in the form of a tray having transparent side members.
Fig. 2 is a sectional detail view illustrating the joint-forming means and the ornamentingframes as employed in the receptacle.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the invenhinged thereto.
Fig. 4 is a perspective showing a frag- 'ment of the box and hinged cover member and showing in detail the hinge construction uniting these members.
The present invention contemplatesthe "provision of a receptacle of various forms as above indicated, as for instance, the prov1s1on of an ornamental tray having transparent sides, andalso the invention may be embodied in the form of boxes or receptacles with movable or removable covers, and in the form of the invention illustrated in Fig. 1, the receptacleis depicted as a tray having an octagonal bottom2 with a suit able number of marginal upturned sections 3, the bottom and sections preferably being obtained by grinding or chipping.
An important feature of my present invention resides in the means whereby avery ornamental and attractive receptacle is obtained and this feature comprises the provision of meansforbordering and binding the several sections of the receptacle together in a neat and attractive mannerso lthat the joints between the abutting edges of the several sections 2 and 3 for instance ,-going to compose a receptacle are concealed,
and at the same time effectually united as to produce a substantial frame or box. To that-end, in the various adaptations of receptacles in which the invention'inay be utilized, the section members3 are shown as assembled into proper relation so as to bring the contiguous edges into abutment as shown iifFig. 2, and these abutting edges are then bound together on the outer surfaces of each of the members by the application thereto ot-a suitable binding strip or medium 4 which may be of paper, cloth or other pli able material, preferably pasted on its inner surface tothe outer surfaceoftheadjacent gsectionzmembers 2 and 3 at the joint 5, the
binding means preferably being-formedof a strip; o-rtape of suitable width and mate- -1'ial sutficiently strongyso as to efiectually secure the :pieces in assembled relation. Upon-the inner surface ofthe tray as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, and at the joint 5 :thereis appliedan inner binding strip or means-6 of suitable material and obviously the inner binding strip .6 and the outer binding, strip 4 may beof any suitable color or decorated in. any suitable manner so that when the binding is extended continuously around the joint at 5 connecting the bottom 25120 the: several upwardly and angularly dis- ;posed membersifw, the inner binding strip :6 will form apontinuous border, the exposed surface of which appropriately ornamerits the receptacle. To secure 'further, or-
rnamentationof the device and also for the purpose of covering the edgesoif the binding and bordering :strips i and 6, for 111- stance, there maybe applied to, these edges inthepositions where they overlie the surface-of the members 2or '3 an ornamenting device l-i'i the form of lace paper for 111- stance, or other suitable ornamenting means asindioated at 7, the; several strips ofornamentingmaterial 7 .if'orming, when applied 1' to the border edges-60f one of the panels 3 for insta-nce, a complete frame through Ew'v-h-ich the rays rof light may pass through t;he-itranspa-rent-or glass panels, 3. In a like manner-the :edges of the binding strip or tape 4 may also be covered with a frame i strip 7 of suitable design. andornamenta- ;tion,-,i't. obviously being possible to utilize a r di-lferent ornamenting strip 7 onthe'out- "side of the tray than that-which is used on theinside of the'tray. The marginal and outer rim-forming edges of the several members3of whichfthe tray-is composed in Fig. ;1V -ar,e adapted 'to be covered by asu'itable binding. and bordering strip as indicatedat -8-i-n Fig. 2 in the detail section, this strip being ofsuch Twiidthas to be folded from overlapping relation upon the inner surface rofsa section-:3, ato'r instance, "over the outer edge vet-the gg-lassaplate or panel 3,;and -thenr-folded, inwardly "underneath of this fipanel anid appropriately secured thereto,
thus covering the exposed rim or edge of the section 3, and the edges of the border-- stance, pa'ste boarc, and tosecure the pan- -els3 to theshell 10. The borderingstrip 4*? is applied :along the marginal outersurfaceof :the panel to be secured in place andis; then turned inwardly over the top or edge as at 12 of a panel, and then secured to the adjacent and outer face ofthe inner shell as at 13. The corners of contiguousfpanels or sections 3 of the box: are shown as bound together by a piece of binding stripasillustrated at i which; is bent around the angular cornerslof the juncture. of the end and front panels, for instance the end binding meansor strip 4: at each of the scorners. ;of the box being carried down to the bottomof the box where it intersects with the bottoms binding strip applied as above indicated to the front marginal portion of'each panel. for glass section Tocover the/edges of the binding strip 4? or 4* of; the ,diiferent panels 1310f the box, there may be applied to the face of these panels a framing. strip as above, in-
dicated as illustrated at 7, Fig. 3. The
portion of the bordering strip 4* where it is applied to the-shell 10 may bes coneealed @or covered ,by suitable lining material; :as
illustrated at 4 for instance, this lining being utilized to cover the interionpf the shell and also the rim or-top edge-'thereof-so that there Will 'be a harmonious interior qfinish to the box and its relative interior parts. 7
Another important feature ofmyrpresent invention resides in the provision ofrany .ornamentingmeans which may be interposed "panels 8 and the inner-construction 0f the box, :atpicture mas-illustrated? in Fig. 3 1 which is -;p1ac ed gnpon Ea suitable baek ground nf $319. 3, 'f r instan e, chewable solar, t lthough it is to be understood that the ornamenting device, arranged in the rear of a transparent member 3 may be in the form of any suitable picture or any suitable means for displaying to view, the desired feature which may be arranged behind the glass sections 3, as for instance, postal cards or various fabrics or other media.
In Fig. 4 there is illustrated the provision of the hinge by which the cover 15 of the box is hinged to the lower structure thereof, and this hinge construction involves the application to the members which are to be hinged together, of a front or inner flexible strip of material 16 which may be fabric or other pliable material, the central portion of which is secured at 17 to the adjacent and parallel edges 1810f the coplanar members which are connected by the hinged strip 16. In addition to the inner covering Copies of this patent may he obtained for strip 16 there is applied to the rear surface of the hinged members of the top and bottom of the box a further hinge strip as illustrated at 19 on the outer or rear side of these members, this strip being applied to the marginal adjacent portions of the box members as shown and the edges of the hinge strip 19 may be covered by a frame strip 7 if desired.
What I claim is A11 ornamental receptacle comprising an inner shell or box, outer transparent wall sections for the box, a framing strip-like means overlapping the marginal portion of the front of the walls and securing the adjacent edges of each together and also seuring the sections to the boxs outer surace. 1
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
