To all whom it may concern Be it known that L'DAvn) F. VAUGHAN,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Riverton, in the county of Burlington and State of New Jersey,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tamping- Tools, of which the following is a specification. v v
My invention relates to improvements in tamping tools for use in tamping railroad ballast and analogous uses.
Tamping tools for this purpose are usually in the form of picks and bars operated by hand or by suitable mechanical devices, 7
the picks and bars having substantially fiat, impact, end portions adapted to strike against the material being tamped.
Heretofore tamping tools have been objectionable-because, when in use, the impact end portions thereof quickly assume a sharp, rounded or pointed form due to wear occasioned by the friction of the tools against the broken stones, gravel or other material being tamped. This quickly decreases the efliciency of the tools, as the impact end portions thus worn enter between the pieces of ballast material and separate them instead of driving them into the desired position during the tamping operation, and require the impact end portions to be reforged to produce fresh, substantially flat, impact portions thereon. This requirement is not only accompanied by the great objection that the body member of the tool, having the impact end portion, gradually grows shorter under successive reforging operations, but also by the further objection that much time is lost by the tools remaining out of service before, during and after the reforging operations, as it is necessary to send them to suitable shops for this purpose. The object of my invention is to overcome or greatly lessen the objections above set forth; and I accomplish my object by the provision of a tamping tool of novel, simple and eflicient construction: first, having an impact end portion which in service can not be worn into the'objectionable-sharp, rounded or pointed forni and, second, having the impact end portion thereof formed on an impact member which is removably engaged with the operated body member of the tool and which, when it wears down. may be readily removedfrom the body member and Specification of Letters Patent.

substituted by a new one at comparatively little expense.
With this and related objects in view, my invented tool consists of the elements and the combinations of them hereinafter de scribed and claimed.

Referring to the drawings, 2 designates the body member which may be of any suit able shape and size for its intended purpose to be operated either by hand or by power devices during the tamping operation.
The body member 2 has an end portion 3 which is adapted to be driven down toward ber ewhich is adapted to strikeagainst the said material, during the tamping operation,
and which is preferably made separate and detachable from the body member 2, as will be hereinafter explained...l;

her 4:, and providing shoulders 6 at the base of the tongue 5,and the end portion 3, including its tongue 5, is bifurcated by being split, at 7. In the normal condition of the member2 the side arms 8 oi the bifurcated end portion 3 are shogged or set out of aline-' ment with each other, as clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 5; and the body member 2 is formed of suitable resilient metal adapted when sprung from a normal condition to continue to tend to resume said normal condition, so thatwhen the side arms 8 ot the bifurcated end portion 3 are sprung mto alinement with each other, as shown in Fi and the member i is made of steel or other suitable liilCl metal adapted to resist wear. When the impact member 4: is driven on to the tongue 5, the sides of the bifurcated end portion 3 of the body member 2 will be sprung from the position shown in Fig. 5 and into alinement with each other, as shown in Fig. 6, so that, after the member at has been driven on to the tongue 5, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, 6, 8 and. 9, the side arms of the bifurcated end portion 3, in tending to resume their said normal or shogged condition, will act against the impact member 4t surrounding them in a manner to firmly hold the member 4 in place upon the body member 2 and prevent its accidental removal or displacement therefrom.
The sides of the free end of the tongue 5 are beveled at 10, to permit the impact member 4 to be driven on to the same, as will be readily understood; and, the-member i, when it is applied to the body member 3, is driven on to the tongue 5 until the inner or basal end oi the member l comes into engagement with the shoulders 6 which prevent further inward movement of the member 5 both while being applied to the body member 2 and afterward when the tool is in service. The size of the impact member 4 is such that, after ithas been driven on to the body member 2 and into engagement with the shoulders Gthereof, the outer or impact end portion-11 of thememberliwill project =be- "yo-nil the-outer end of--the tongue 5. .This

When the impact member l is in place uponthe body member 2, the face of the free outer endzor bottom 01 the impact end portion of themeinber' i formed by the band 9 and material 12 forms the impact face which strikes against the material being tamped, and, as this face of the hard band portion 9 of the member t always surrounds the softer material 12 within the same, until the outer or impact end of the member iis worn down to the outer end of the tongue 5, it will be impossible for the impact end of the member 4, as a whole, to be worn into a sharp, rounded or pointed form, and its character will always be such as to provide a broad and etlicient impact surface which will engage the pieces of broken stones, gravel or other material being tamped and drive them into the desired .tamped position.
After the outer end portion of the impact member 4 has been. worn down to or near the outer end of the tongue 5 ot the body portion 2, the worn impact member ,4 is removed from the body member 2 and a new impact member from a lot kept on hand for the purpose is driven on to the tongue in substitution for the worn member, as previously explained, andlthe ,tamping tool is again ready for service, and little time is lost in changing the impact members.

I claim: I
1. A tamping tool comprising a body member, and removable impact member mounted on the body member, said body member having a resilient part sprung from a normal condition and holding said members in engagement with each other in tending to resume its normal condition.
2. A tamping tool comprising a'body member having a bifurcated portion the sides of which are sprung from a normal condition, and a removable impact member mounted on the body member and held in place thereon by said sides tending to resume said normal condition.
3. A tamping tool comprising a body member having a bifurcated portion the sides of Which are sprung from a normal condition, and a removable impact member in the form of a band surrounding said bifurcated portion and held in place thereon by said sides tending to resume said normal condition. I

A tamping tool comprising a body vmember having a reduced end portlon providing a shoulder at the base thereof, said end portion being bifurcated and the sides being sprung from a normal condition, and a removable impact member embracing said reduced end portion and being adapted to. engage said shoulder and being held in place on said end portion by said sides tending to resume said normal condition.
5. A tamping tool comprising a body member,- and a removable impact member mounted on the body member, said impact member comprising a band surrounding a portion of the body member and having a closed impact end portion.

A tamping tool comprising a body tiopiee'ef this patent may be obtained for member, and a removable impact member mounted on the body member, said impact member comprising a band surrounding a portion of the body member and having an impact portion projecting beyond thesame and having its impact portion closed by a filling of material softer than the material forming the band.
7. A tamping tool comprising a body member, and a removable impact member mounted on the body member, said impact member comprising a band surrounding a portion of the body member and having a closed impact end portion, one of said members having a resilient part sprung from a normal condition and engaging a part of the other member, and said members being held in engagement with each other by the action of said part in tending to resume its normal condition.
8. A. tamping tool comprising a body member, and a removable impact member mounted on the body member, said impact member comprising a band surrounding a .portion of the body member and having a closed impact end portion, said body member having a resillent part sprung from a normal conditlon and holdmg said members in engagement With each other in tending to resume its normal condition. y
9. A tamping tool comprising a body member having a biftircated portion the sides of which are sprung from a normal condition, and a removable impact member mounted on the body member and held in place thereon by said sides tending to resume said normal condition, said impact member comprising a band surrounding said bifurcated portion and having a closed impact end portion.
'10. A tamping tool having an impact member comprising an inner portion and an outer portion embracing the inner portion,
said inner portion being formed of softer material than the outer portion.
