To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrrr FIALA, J12, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cedar Rapids, in the county of Linn and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Framing-Clips, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in clips, and more particularly to a clip Which can be used in setting up the frame work for reinforced or poured concrete work. 7
An object of my invention is to provide a clip which may be fitted in place to hold framing timbers and will secure the same against shifting or lateral displacement without the necessity of nailing or otherwise permanently securing the timbers together, and which at the same time permits the removal of the framing after the concrete work has set, by simply driving out or otherwise removing the timbers from the clips, thus leaving the timbers in good condition for reuse.
A further object lies in providing such a clip which may be constructed from a single piece of sheet metal stamped and bent to the proper form, and which is so shaped that it-may be economically manufactured due to the small amount of sheet metal which is used, or which might even be constructed from pieces of scrap sheet metal.-
With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in such novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter set forth in connection with the drawings and then more particularly pointed out in the claims.

The clip as an entirety is formed from a single piece of sheet metal which is stamped or otherwise shaped to take the proper outline in its blank form and for the most part the body portion is a substantially continuous strip as generally indicatedat 1 in Fig. 1. The tongues or ears 2 and 3 are severed. from the body portion, and then the bending of the blank is accomplished so that the side timber embracing arms a and 5 are provided to extend at right angles from the body portion 1, and the tongue carrying portions 6 and 7 are bent at right angles from the side portions 4 and 5 so that the tongues 2 and 3 will be disposed to lie in substantially parallel vertical planes and will be in line with the side edges of the body portion 1.
In the use of the clips as shown and described, the side embracing arms 4 and 5 I may be fitted over a cross timber or may be fitted on the upper end of an upright supporting post and the body portion 1 will hold the clip against downward displacement while the side arms l and 5 will contact against the sides of the timber and will present lateral displacement. In this disposition of the clips, the tongues 2 and 3 are disposed vertically at eachside of the body portion 1 and a timber may be fitted across the body portion to lie between these tongues 2 and 3 where it will be held against movement. As the weight upon the timbers increases, the holding action of the clip will be consequently increased due to the fact that the additional weight brings about an increased frictional engagement of the metal of the clip with the timbers.
In the form of the device as shown in Fig. 2, the parts are substantially identical in the action which is accomplished and the only difi'erence is that the body portion 1 is wiped out so that the tongue supporting portions 6' and 7 are spaced a greater distance apart. By forming the parts in the manner set forth, the tongues 2 and 3' are spaced apart sufiiciently that a pair of timbers placed side by side may be mounted on the body portion 1 to be supported by the clip, and in this arrangement of the parts the timbers of the framing may be placed. In this arrangement of the parts it is preferable that the side members 4 and 5 be cut away or notched out as shown at 8 so that unnecessary metal will not be used in the construction of the device, the clips being thus made lighter and at the same timp economizing on the material which is use With the device as illustrated in Fig. 3, the various portions of the clips are formed to give the greatest economy in the metal used, and while not materially reducing the strength of the same'to give the minimum weight so that the clips may be more readily handled and used. In this form, the body portion 9 is shownas being. of sufficient Width to accommodate a pair of timbers placed side by side and the side memhers 10 and 11 are somewhat ofiset toward the side edges of the body portion 9. The tongue supporting portions 12 and 13 are formed on the outer sideedges oi the side portions 10 and 11, and the tongues 14: and 15 are out from the metal at the sides of the body portion 9 and are also extended into the body portions so'that at their upper ends they are widened out, this formation of the tongue not only lightening the body portion 9, but at the same time giving additional bearing surface and strength to the tongues I l and 15.
While I have herein shown and described only specific'forms of the device, it will be understood that Various modifications and changes might be resorted to in the'manner of forming the blanks and in the shaping of the same to the completed article, and I do not therefore desire to be limited to the exact disclosure, but only to such points as may be set forth in the claims.
I claim:
1'. A framing clip comprising a single piece of sheet metal cut and formed to provide a bodyportion adapted to be received upon a timber and having side embracing portions bent downwardly therefrom, and
tongues cut from and bent out at the sides of the body portion to receive a second timber and hold the same in a predetermined relation with respect to the timber on which the clip' is fitted.
2. A- framing clip constructed tromasingle piece of sheet metal comprising a body portion having side portions extending downwardly therefrom, tongue supporting portions formed at the side edges of said side portions, and tongues disposed from said tongue supporting portions to extend above the body portion and to lie in line with the side edges thereof.
