To all whomit may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD A. SOHUBERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Charles, in the county of St. Charles and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tobacco- Pipes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in smoking appliances and more particularly to a pipe of novel form, wherein the tobacco is supported in an elongated tube in much the same manner as it is in a cigar or cigarette, v

The object of the invention is to form a pipe of the character described, which shall be light in structure, strong and durable, and which comprises means whereby the smoke issuing therefrom shall have first been cooled, and secondly, cleansed thoroughly of nicotin or other injurious ingredients prior to coming into contact with the mouth of the smoker.

Another object of the present invention is to provide means whereby any excessive heating of the exterior of the pipe is prevented.

With these and other objects in View, which will become apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, this invention comprises a pipe of the character described composed of an inner and outer shell of light metal, preferably aluminum, having interposed therebetween a layer of asbestos or other heat insulating material, said pipe being formed with an elongated tobacco chamber provided with a cover and a plurality of smaller chambers disposed intermediate said elongated chamber and the mouth piece of the pipe, for cooling and cleansing the smoke issuing therefrom.

In the accompanying drawings is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention, wherein it will be understood that Various changes and modifications may be made as to detailed construction and arrangement of parts, without departing from the spirit of the invention, and in which drawings Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view through a pipe constructed in accordance with this invention.

In the embodiment of the invention as dlsclosed in the accompanying drawings,

The pipe disclosed in the accompanying drawings comprises an elongated tubular member A adapted to receive at one end thereof, a mouth piece B. The mouth piece may be attached to the elongated tubular member A by any suitable means, shown in the drawings asscrew threads 1. The elongated tubular member A is preferably constructed with an inner shell 2 and outer shell 3 of a light and durable metal, preferably aluminum, said inner and outer shells having interposed therebetween, suitable msulatmg material 4, preferably asbestos. Themouth piece B may also be composed of an inner and outer metallic shell having asbestos positioned therebetween. However, if desired, the mouth piece B may be formed of amber or any other suitable material.

It is preferred to construct the elongated tubular member A by forming therein a tobacco chamber 5, said chamber preferably extending the greater length of the tubular member A. The forward end 6 of said tubular member A is provided with suitable means for retaining the material to be smoked within the tobacco chamber 5, said means being shown in the drawings as a perforated disk or screen 7. The tobaccochamber is also provided with a suitable cover 8, which it is preferred to hinge to one end of said chamber 5. The cover 8 when closed, is adapted to complete the tubular appearance of the elongated member A. From the point 11, which marks the rearward extent of the tobacco chamber 5, to the end 12 of the tubular member A, is formed a housing 13 for the cleansing chambers hereinafter described. Positioned within the housing 13 of the elongated tubular member A, are a plurality of cleansing chambers 14 and 15, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. In the chamber 15, which lies in juxtaposition to the mouth piece B, it is preferred to place a chemically treated substance 16 for the purpose of extracting the nicotin or other injurious ingredients from the smoke as it passes therethrough, and prior to the issuance thereof from the mouth piece B. It is preferred that nothing be placed in the chamber 14, said chamber merely acting in the capacity of a coolin chamber for the smoke,

. of the smoke passing therethrough. After the cup- shaped members 16 and 17 have been telescoped, forming the chamber 15, said chamber 15 is inserted within the housing 13 to any position desired. After this hasbeen done, the chamber 14 is formed by merely inserting the cup-shaped member 18 within the housing 13, to a position whereinthe perforated disk member 19 of the cup 18 lies flush with the forward end of the housing 13. It will be noted that the chamber 14 is formed between the perforated disk member 1.9 and one of the perforated disk members of the chamber 15. 7

It will readily be seen that the cooling and cleansing chambers may be entirely removed from the pipe, thereby permitting the same to be thoroughly cleaned.

' Fig. 2 shows a modification of the invention wherein the cover 8, is shown composed of a plurality of sections 33 arranged in telescopic relation, one of said sections 33 being pivoted at 36 to the forward part of the elongated tubular member A, thereby permitting the sections 33, after the same have been telescoped one under the other, to be raised in a vertical position, thus exposing the entire tobacco chamber 5. In this modification a cover may be retained in its closed position by any suitable means, shown in the drawings as a clip 34 designed to engage a peripheral flange 35 carried by the section 33.

It is obvious that this invention is not limited to the precise construction shown in the drawings, and that various modifications and alterations may be made therein by those skilled in the art, within the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what 'I' claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In a device of the class described, the

combination with a pipe comprising a tobacco chamber and a mouth piece, of a plurality of chambers interposed between said tobacco chamber and said mouth piece, one of said chambers being formed by a'plurality of cup-shaped members telescoped together, while the other of said chambers is formed between one of the telescopic members of said first mentioned chamber, and a tubular cup-shaped member positioned in advance of, and out of contact with said chamber.

2. A pipe comprising an elongated tubular member having a tobacco chamberand ssj a mouth piece, said tobacco chamber being provided with an elongated cover composed of a plurality of telescopic members to extend throughout the length of the tobacco chamber, one of said telescopic members having pivotal engagement with said tobacco chamber.
