to provide such a holder that will have a positive gripping engagement with one of the type members, so as to provide a holding or securing means, which will have little, or no, strain thereon, and a means which will permit ct any one of the type to be removed and exchanged for another, as is often required in using such holders.
Heretofore, it has been the main practice to provide a ch npin bar or wedge adapted to be inserted within the holder and to be engaged within a slot in the type shanks to hold such type in position, and when a change of type is required it is necessary to remove or release such wedge or bar from all of the type in order to exchange any one ot' the same. in the use of my in'iproved holder the type shanks are smooth or square and have no slots therein, as the action of my improved securing means is against the squared shanks and needs no recess or slot, and further any one oi the individual securing means may be depressed to release its corresponding type to allow for removal. or exchange.
lVhile i have shown and described one particular form of my invention, it will be readily understood that I do not wish to be limited to such particular form of construction, as it may be adapted to other devices than type holders, such as tool holders, etc, with slight modifications as to shape and form, all within the scope of the claims.
To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to construct and use my improved type holder, I will describe the same more fully, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an el vation of the type holder;

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A type holder comprising a body portion having a recess therein for the receppressed ball-shaped wedge members mounted in said holder and adapted to extend within said recess and engage one of the side faces of said type, and means for individually releasing said wedge members.
2. A type holder of the class described comprising a body portion having a recess therein adapted toreceive type members, a plurality of ball-shaped wedge members mounted within apertures opening in the said recess, spring members mounted below said wedge members and adapted to normally force the same in an upward direction, said wed e members being adapt-ed to extend within said recess to engage the side faces of said type, and means for forcing said wedge'members inwardly and com Dressing said spring members to allow'the removal or exchange of said type.
A type holder of the type described comprising a body portion having a recess therein adapted to receive a plurality of type, a plurality of ball-shaped wedge members mounted within apertures opening said Wedge members being adapted to 6X:

A type holder of the class described comprising a body portion having a recess therein adapted to receive a plurality of type, and a plurality of other recesses entering said first-named recess and extend ing downwardly and outwardly on an angle from the side walls of said first-named recess, a ball-shaped wedge member mounted within each of said last-named apertures, spring members mounted in the rear of said wedge members adapted to normally force said members outwardly, said wedge members being adapted to extend within said recess n appreciable distance so as to en? gage theside faces of said type members,
and plunger members mounted within said apertures and engaging said wedge members and adapted to be forced inwardly to release said wedge members and allow the removal or exchange of said type.
5. A type holder of the class described comprising a body portion having'a recess therein for the reception of type members, a plurality of spring pressed ball-shaped wedge members mounted in said holder on an angle to, the plane of the sides of said recess, said wedge members being adapted to extend within said recess and engage the side faces of said type, and plungers adapted to engage said wec ge members to force the same inwardly to release said type to permit of removal or exchange.
6. A type holder comprising a body portion having a recess therein for the reception of type, a spring pressed ball-shaped wedge member mounted in said holder and adapted to extend within said recess and engaging the side faces of said type, and plunger means for releasmg said wedge member to allow the removal of said type.
