Description
ANSON MOD. WILSON, OF MOVVEAQU'A, ILLINOIS.
BLACKBOARD CI-IALK-RACK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 12, 1918.
Application filed ctober 24, 1917. Serial No. 198,221. i
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, ANsoN MGD. VVrLsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Moweaqua, in the county of Shelby and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blackboard Chalk-Racks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in blackboard chalk racks.
The object of this invention is to provide a rack to be used in connection with the blackboard for catching the chalk dust falling from the board and from the brush used for cleaning olf the board.
A further object of this invention is to provide a chalk rack with a longitudinally extending recess in which is secured a tank over which is arranged a porous cover so as to permit the dust to freely fall from the board into the trough or tank and prevent the dust from flying about the room thus increasing the sanitation of school rooms.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a blackboard with a chalk rack which has a longitudinally extending recess in its upper side, a liquid containing tank removably tted in the recess, a foraminous cover hingedly secured to the tank and overlying the same and is reinforced so as to permit the blackboard erasers to be rubbed over the cover so that the dust accumulated on the erasers may be forced into the tank and the liquid in the tank will prevent the dust from flying about the room.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a blackboard chalk rack of this character, which will be simple, practical and comparatively inexpensive in construction and one that can be manufactured and sold at a low cost.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and set forth in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawing:
Figure l is a fragmentary top plan View partly in section of a blackboard chalk rack, made in accordance with this invention7 Fig. 2 is a fragmentary perspective view of the same, and y Fig 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawing.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 5 designates the wall of a school room 'to which is secured the usual type of blackboard 6 which blackboard and wall has secured thereto the rack 7. The rack is provided in its upper side with a longitudinally extending recess 8 which forms a. rear shoulder 9 and front shoulder 10. The rear shoulder 9 is provided in its upper side with a recess l1 in which the lower end of the blackboard 6 is adapted to be fitted thus positioning the front face of the blackboard flush with the upper edge of the shoulder 9 as illustrated in Fig, 2. The front shoulder 10 is cut away on its inner side as at 12 to provide a shoulder 13 which is in a horizontal alinement with the upper edge of the shoulderl 9 as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawing.
A metal tank 14: is removably litted in the recess 8 of the rack 7 and this tank has laterally extending flanges' 15 which are adapted to rest upon the upper edge of the shoulder 9 and horizontal shoulder 13, thus holding the tank in a horizontal alinement within the recess 8 of the rack. The edge of the flange 15 resting upon the shoulder 9 is in abutting engagement with the front surface of the blackboard 6, thus the chalk dust erased from and dropping from the blackboard surface will accumulate in the tank 14.
The tank is adapted to have therein a suitable liquid designated A, which liquid is adapted to prevent the chalk dust after accumulating in the tank from rising therefrom and scattering or blowing about the room as is now the case in the general types vof blackboard racks in use.
A foraminous cover 16 includes the spaced parallel longitudinally extending` bars 17 which are connected together by the relatively spaced transversely extending bars 18. The bars 17 and 18 have secured thereto the foraminous material 19, which material is so secured to the bars as to be remorced and permit the erasers to be rubbed over the surface 19 Without causing the surface 19 to sag into the tank 14 and thus permitvthe chalk dust in the erasers to be cleaned therefrom and deposited in the tank 14.
One of the bars 17 is adapted to be hingedly secured in the eyes 2() formed integrally with the upper side of the iiange 15 and the flange Which rests upon the upper edge of the shoulder 9 thus permittingthe cover to be swung to open position to permit the tank to be removed from the recess and emptied of its contents and cleaned so as to be replaced and filled With a suitable liquid for the purpose described.
A ring 21 is secured in the cover 16 so as to permit the cover to be raised when it is desired to remove the tank 14 from its posi tion Within the recess 8 or' the rack.
In use, the tank is lled With a suitable liquid after it has been positioned in its recess, ythe cover is forced to a closed position as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3 and upon the operation of the erasers over the surface of the blackboard the dust accumulating or falli-ng from the board will be deposited in the tank 14 and Will mingle with the liquid in the tank and'thus be prevented from Iiying from the tank due to vibration or jarring of the board.
When it is desired to empty the tank, it is only necessary to open the cover, remove the tank from its recess and dump its contents therefrom and replace in the tank new liquid and place the tank back in its position Within the recess and the device is ready for use again. f
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
l. In combination, a blackboard, a rack Gopis of this patent may be obtained for ve cents each, by addressing the secured to the blackboard, said rack having a recess in its upper side forming front and rear shoulders, the front shoulder having` a cut away portion on its inner side to provide a horizontal alined shoulder With the upper edge of the rear shoulder, a tank removably fitted in the recess and having laterally extending iianges engaging the horizontally alined shoulders of the front and rear shoulders, and a reinforced oraminous cover hingedly secured to the iange of the tank to overlie and cover the tank, as and for the purpose specified.
2. In combination, a blackboard, a rack therefor, said rack provided With a longitudinally extending recess in its upper side providing front and rear Shoulders, the rear shoulder having a recess in its upper side to provide a socket tor the lower edge of the blackboard, the front shoulder provided with a cut out portion providing a shoulder alining with the upper edge of the rear shoulder, a tank fitted in thc recess, ianges carried by the tank and engaging the upper edge of the rear shoulder and the shoulder formed by the cut out portion on the front shoulder, and a cover, said cover comprising spaced longitudinally extending parallel rods connected together by transverse rods, and a foraminous body secured to the rods, one of said rods being hingedly secured to one flange of the tank and the opposite rods lying upon the other flange to permit the cover to overlie the tank.
In testimony whereof I aix my signature in presence of tvvo Witnesses.
