IMPROVEMENT IN STEAM-GENERATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 125,907, dated April 23, 1872.
Specification of certain Improvements in Steam-Generators, invented by DAVID REN- SHAW, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York.
Nature and Object of the Intention.
This invention is designed to furnish a cheap, compact, and economical steam generator, which can be easily cleaned and kept in order and the said invention consists in the combination of a reverberatory furnace, a steamdrum Description of the Accompanying Drawing.

General Description.
A is a reverberatory furnace, having two grates, B B, and a bridge, 0, between them to support the horizontal pipe D. I prefer to make said pipe D of cast-iron, and to cast it with projections a a thereon, and forming a part of the same casting to receive the fiat sections E, which are each provided with a connecting portion, 1), to form joints with the parts a, which joints should be surfacejoints, firmly bolted together. E E are hollow flat cast-iron sections, which are made in the form of a disk, and stay-bolted with bolts 6, Fig. 3, which are cast in one piece therewith and form a part thereof. Besides the connecting portions b, these sections have connections 0 with the pipes d, which are cast with or connected to the steam-drum F. I prefer to connect the pipes c and (1 inside the furnace, so that any one of the sections E may be removed and replaced without disturbing the arch of the furnace. F is a steam-drum, which may be a cylinder in the form shown, and may be cast in a single piece, or it may be of wrought-iron. The ends of the horizontal pipe D should project outside of the furnace, and be provided with heads f properly bolted to them, which may be removed for the purpose of cleaning out any sediment which may fall into the pipes D from other portions of the boiler, or which may be formed or deposited therein. The feedpipe G is also attached to one or both ends of the pipe D, and one end is supplied with a blow-off cock, H. I is a pipe, which forms a connection between the pipe D and the steamdrum F to insure a certain and proper circulation between them. Said pipe should be placed in the wall of the furnace or outside thereof, so as to be removed from the intense heat of the furnace, and is designed to restore the water to its proper level in case of any foaming or undue activity of the water in the sections E.
It will be observed, from a careful examination of the construction and combination of parts herein described, that while the form of the sections E E is such as to receive the heat from the fire and the radiation from the crown of the furnace in the most economical manner, and to admit of the most perfect circulation of the heat between them at the same time, all the surfaces of these sections upon which the water rests, and upon which sediment may lodge or form, are inclined downwardly toward the openings which connect them to the cylinder, so that any sediment forming in any of these sections E E may be drawn off through the cylinder D, and by this means the whole boiler may be easily cleaned, while at the same time it affords a very extraordinary amount of heating surface in a very small space.
