JOHN F. GODFREY, OF ELKHABI, INDIANA.
SELF-PUMPING BUCKET;
Specification of Letters gaunt.
Patented Mar. 12, 1918.
Application filed I'ebruary 23, 1917, Serial No. 150,299. Renewed November 1, 1917. Serial No. 199,800.
To all whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that I, JOHN F. GODFREY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elkhart, in the county of Elkhart and State of 5 Indiana, have invented new and useful Improv'ements in Self-Dumpin Buckets, oi? which the following isa speci cation.
My invention relates to self dumpin buckets and more especially to buckets use for hoisting and dumping ore, coal and the like.
One object of my invention is thedproduction of aself dumping bucket provi ed with Wheels to enable it to be elevated on an inclined guideway or track for subsequent horizontalmovement by any suitable means H and finally lowered and self dumped at a point substantially remote from the top of the inclined guideway. Another obect is the production of a self dumping ucket having a hinged dumpin bottom provided with improved latch mec anism for locking the bottom in a closed position. Other objects will be mentioned herein from time to time and fully described.
The preferred embodiment of my invention is well illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure l'is an end elevation of a bucket embodying my invention;
so Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the bucket; Fig.
3 is a: top (plan view; Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view; an Fig. 5 is a fragment showing the carrier and latch mechanism for the dumping bottom.
Similar numerals of reference refer to similar members and parts of members throughout the several-views on thedrawin Y eferring to the drawings in detail, the numeral 1 indicates a bucketbody formed of any suitable. material and open-at its 'top for loading, provided with a hinged dumping bottom,- as will be hereinafter described, for dischargin the" bucket load. A bail 2 is attached to t 1e bucket 1 to which a hoisting cable ma be connected in any suitable manner, sai bail being" pivotally carried upon the wheel axles 3, 3 which are rigidly mounted upon the bucket body and vu iupn porting the outboard end of the wheel I 66 axles 3.
manner.
members mounted upon the bucket body at 7, 7, and adapted to be retracted by the springs 8, 8 after the discharge of the bucket load, said springsbeing attached to the bottomand bucket at 9 and 10, respectively. The bottom 6 is provided also with achanneled retainer bar 11 extending across the under side thereof and to which it is rigidly fastened in any suitable manner such as bolts or rivets, one end of which bar projects somewhat beyond the edge of the bot tom 6. The'numeral 12 indicates a shoulder carried by the bar 11 and adapted to serve as an abutment member, or portion, for the latch hereinafter described.
-The-numeral 13 indicates a latch hook pivotally mounted at 14: upon the bucket' bottom carrier member 15, the latter being pivotally supported upon the pin 16 which is carried in the pin brackets 17 l7 rigidly fastened to the bucket body in any suitable The numeral 18 indicates a sup porting ledge provided on the member 15 and upon which the end of the retainer bar 11 rests and upon which it is normally con fined by the engagement of the latch book 13 with the retainer bar shoulder 12. The carrier 15 is provided with the extension 19 upon. the lower end of which is provided a pair of laterally projecting arms 20, 20, one of said arms being suitably apertured at 21 to receive and guide the latch actuation rod 22, the latter being pivotally fastened to the latch hook 13 by a pin 23. The latch actuation rod 22' is provided with a. knob 24 at its lower extremity, said knob, being nor-- it until the knob 24 strikes the floor, or surface of the depository, thereby raising the latch hook 13 and unlatching theretainer bar, and thereby the bottom 6, whereby the carrier member 15 is free to be swung on its pivot 16 to disengage. the ledge 18 fron thecnd of the retainer bar 11, such disengagement being effected by the c'ontact of the carrier- arms 20, 20 with the depository floor,
orits contents, assisted by the weight of the bucket load, while the bucket 1 is swin ing' naturally back and forth at the'end 0 its hoisting cable.
' thereupon engaging beneath the end of the 4 is displaced onl bar 11 on the return swing of said carrier member and the shoulder 12 is engaged by the hook latch 13, whereby pivotal. movement of the carrier 15 is prevented and thereby locking the ledge 18 beneath the end of the bar 11. Norma ly the weight of the carrier arm 19 and the arms 20, 20 serves as a counter balance to swing the carrier member 15 into a perpendicular position, thereb ositioning the ledge 18 directly beneat t e end of the retainer bar 11, following the upward swing of the bottom 6, for an porting said bottom when the bucket is loariiad. And when said'carrier 15 swings itself into a substantially perpendicular sition the latch hook '13 1s lifted and pped into engagement with the shoulder 12 .of the bar 11 from which engagement it by the u ward movement of the latch ro 22 when ifted by the engagement of the knob 2-1 with a stop memher when the bucket is lowered, as described.
'While In primarily or handling and a moving coal nevertheless it may be used for handling and transferring any divided .or disintegrated materials.
I claim:
1. The combination with a bucketprovided with a hinged dumping door, of a dumping door carrier pivotally carried by the bucket, said carrier being provided with a ledge adapted to support said door and to be moved into and out of supporting relation therewith when said door carrier is swung upon its pivot; a movable latch hook carried by said door carrier and detachably locking said carrier ledge in supporting relation with 'said dumping door; and .latch hook disengaging means actuated when the bucket descends whereby said door carrier ledge is freed for movement out of supporting relation with said dumping door.
2, The combination witha bucket provided with a'hinged dumping door, of a dumpin door carrier movably carried by said buc et, said' carrier being provided with a ledge adapted to support said door and to be moved intoand out of supportingrelation therewith when said door carrier is actuated; a movable latch hook supported by.
said door carrieriand detachably locking said carrier ledge in supporting relation withsaid dumping door; a latch actuation member operatively connected with said latch hook and adapted-to actuate said latch hook when the bucket descends whereby said door carrier ledge is freed for movethe unlatched bottom 6, as de improved bucket is intended detachably engaging the shoulder on said shouldered member whereby said carrier and carrier ledge are detachably. locked in supporting relation with said dumping door,
shouldered member; and latch hook disengaging means actuated when the bucket descends, whereby said door carrier ledge is freed for movement out of supportin relation with said dumping door shou dered member.
4. The combination with a bucket PM vided with a hinged dumpin door, of a dumping door carrier pivota ly mounted upon the bucket, said carrierbeing provided with a ledge adapted to support said dumping door and to be moved into and out of supporting relation therewith v'vhensaid carrier is swung upon its pivot, said carrier being provided a so with a laterally projecting and apertured arm; a movable latch hook supportedby said doorcarrier and detachably lockingsaid carrier lodge in supporting relation with said dumping'door;
"and a latch hookactuation rod operatively when the bucket descends, thereby enabling pivotal movement of said door carrier.
5. The combination with a bucket provided .with a hinged dumping door, of a shouldered retainer bar rigidly secured to the dumping door and promoting from one side thereof; a dumping door carrier pivotally mounted upon the bucket, said carrier being provided with a ledge adapted to engage beneath'the e'nd'of said retainer bar for supporting said dumping door and to be moved into'and out of supporting relation therewith when said door carrier is swun upon its pivot, said carrier being provide also with an extension and anapertured lateral projection carried by the extension thereof; a latch hook pivotally mounted upon said door carrier adjacent said led ge, e
the hook whereof detachably engages shouldered portion of said retainer bar, whereby said carrier ledge is detachably confined beneath said retainer bar; and a latch hook actuation rod operatively connected with said latch hook and arranged end, said knob bein within the aperture of said lateral projection, said rod being movable within said aperture and provided with a knob at its lower adaptedto engage a stop member when t e bucket descends for eflecting longitudinal movement of said rod, thereby disengaging said latch hook from said retainer bar shoulder and enabling pivotal movement of said door carrier for the disengagement of said ledge and the retainer bar.
. In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature this 19th day of February, 1917.
JOHN F. GODFREY.
