Description

W. 'E. JENTZ.
HAY HACK.
APPLICATION FILED JAN. I5. 1917.
Patenwi! Feb. 26, 1918.
WIT/M5885 HAY-RACK,
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 26, 191%.,
Application filed January 15, 1917. Serial No. 1 12332.
' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VViLLIAM E. JENIIZ, a citizen. of the United States, and a resldent of Platteville, in the county of Grant and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and Improved Hay-Back, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to hay racks adapted to be mounted on a wagon, and more particularly relates to fastening means for the U- bolt clamps employed in securing the rack to sills or equivalent supporting members.
My improved fasteners have formed thereon at one end an eye through which a leg of the U-bolt clamp passes, the fastener at the opposite end having a transverse hole which in practice receives the transverse rod on which the ladder of the hay rack is mounted, so that the tightening of the nuts on the said rod will serve to hold the fasteners rigidly in position on the sills or other fixed members pertaining to the rack, whereby the U-bolt clamps are held against displacement;
Reference is to be had to the accompany ing drawings forming a part of. this specification in which similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a transverse vertical section of a hay rack to which my invention has been applied;
Fig. 2 is a detail. sectional plan view on the line 2-2, Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section on the line 3-8, Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical section on the line t4, Fig. 1.
The numeral 10 indicates a rack of any approved detail construction; 11, the sills thereof; 12, the ladder of the hay rack; and 13, a transverse bar. The numeral 14: indicates a latch hook on the ladder 12 to engage any fixed member of the rack, such as a transverse bar 15. The latch hook does not constitute part of the present invention as it forms the subject matter. of United States Letters Patent No. 1,163,544, granted to me December 7th, 1915.
The numeral 16 indicates lJ-bolts which embrace the sills 11 at the under side and pass at opposite sides of the bar 15, 17 being 5 the bar washers of the U-bolts and 18 the nuts thereof, whereby the rack is clamped to the sills 11. To prevent displacement of the U-bolts, I provide means engaging a leg of each bolt and itself secured in position by 5 the securing of the ladder rod 13. Each fastener consists of an element 19 here shown as a small plate, one end of which is bent to form an eye 20 which receives a leg of a U-bolt 16. At the opposite end from the 6 eye 20, each fastener 19 is formed with a transverse hole through which the ladder rod 13 passes so that the tightening of the nuts 21 of said rod securely holds the fasteners 19 to the sills 11 and thereby serving 6 to firmly hold the U-bolts in given position. In addition to the nuts 21, nuts 22 are threaded on rod 18 at the inner faces of the sills between the same and the ladder., The rod also has nuts 23 at the inner sides of the 7 ladder rails. Thus, rod 13 is rigidly secured while the ladder may swing on the rod.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent: 7 The combination with a hay rack, its sills, a ladder, and a rod extending.transversely throughthe sills and on which the ladder is mounted to swing, of clamps to secure the rack to the sills, the said clamps including 8 U-bolts, and fasteners for the clamps, said fasteners having each an eye at one end through which a leg of a U-bolt passes, and formed at the opposite end with a hole transverse to said eye, the said rod extending 8 through the said holes, and means on said rod to secure said fasteners.
