JOHN M. GILLIGAN, OF ROCK'VILLE, INDIANA.
BELT-BUCKLE.
Application filed April 3, 1917.
To all 'whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that. l, JOI-IN M. GILLiGAN, a
citizen of the United States, and a resident oi! l'ockville, in the county of Parke and State of Indiana, have made certain new and nseiiul, Improvements in Belt-Buckles, ol? which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in belt bucklesI and has for its object t0 provide a buckle olf the character specified, wherein the ends may be quickly and easily connected and detached, and wherein the said ends are vieldingly connected.
In the drawings- Figure l is a front view ot the buckle.
Fig. Q is a tcp planview.
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3--3 of Fig. 5 looking in the direction of the arrows adm jacent to the line.
Fig. l is a perspective view ot' the buckle with the ends oit' the belt disconnected.
Fig. 5 is a section on the line ot 'li1 ig. 3. and
Fig. 6 is a rear view olf the buckley with the ends ot' the belt disconnected.
lu. the present embodiment of the invention.. the buckle is composed of a channel or U shaped member l, having at one end a longitudinally extending lug 2, and a second channel or U shaped member 3 is provided, having one, end closed as shown, and ha 'ing at the said end, a longitudinally eX- tending 'lug 4, which is pivotally connected to the lug 2 by a rivet 5 or the like. T he U shaped men'lber 3 is adapted to swing into and out oli the U shaped member l as shown in Figs. el; and 5, and the said member 3 has its channel facing downward, that is, the said member is reversed with respect to the member l.
(lne oit the ends li oit the belt is connected to the U shaped member 3 and the other end 7 ot the belt is adapted to engage between that wall. ot the U shaped member 1 remote from the lug 2 and the adjacent wall of the U shaped member 3. T he end 6 of the belt is connected to the member 3 by a pin and slot connection 7a and 8. The end 6 ot' the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented lFeb. 26, lgll.
serial No. 159,442. l
belt has a metal clip which is secured to the end thereof, and at the clip, the belt is slotted longitudinally as indicated at 8. The pin 7n extends transversely between the walls of the U shaped member 3 and springs 1l are arranged between the clip 9 and a cross bar l0 at Closed end lelo the member 3. These springs normally hold the belt end and the member 3 in the position oit Fig. 8. but the belt end may yield with respect to the channel shaped member within limits prescribed by the slot 8.
The belt end 7 is provided with a series of openings l2, and one of these openings is adapted to be engaged with. a laterally eX tending pin 13 on that wall of the channel shaped member 3 remote from the lug 2. There is sullicient space between the adjacent walls et the members l and 3 of this pin to permit the easy insertion of the belt.
ln use the belt is placed about the bodv with the buckle in Jfront and the channel shaped member l is swung down with respect to the member 3, as indicated in Fig. 4l, until the belt end 7 maj,T engage with the pin 18. When this is done, the inemberl is swung upwardly into the position oi` Figs. l and 2, and it will be obvious that the belt ends cannot become disengaged until the member swung down with respect to the member 5:3. "be belt ends may yield with respect to each other to prevent undue pres* sure of the body.
l. claim:
A. beltbuckle comprising a pair of channel Shaped. members, one or' the members be ing inverted and pi'votally connected to the other member at one wall thereoiE to swing within the channel ot the same, and being` of less width to leave a space between the opposite wallV and the said first named member, said first named member having a pin extending laterally toward the last Vnamed wall of the second named member, said pin being adapted to engage one end of a belt. the other end lbeing adapted for connection with the irst named member'.
