To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BURNHA-M 0. S110 NEY, a citizen of the United States, residing in Elizabeth, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Writing Machines, of whichthe following is a specification.
This invention relates to typewriting machines, and more particularly to means for shifting the ribbon mechanism, so that different stripes or fields of the ribbon may be rendered inefiective. This application is a division of my application No. 597,117, filed December 13, 1910, (now Patent No. 1,237,258.)
I have provided that certain of the tabu- -lating keys for the typewriter carriage shall be capable of shiftingthe ribbon mechanism, so that the types shall print red, or any other special color.
The present improvements are illustrated in connection with column skipping, or column selecting keys, but it will e under stood that the invention ma be carried out in connection with other kinds of tabulating mechanism.
Other features and advantages will hereinafter appear.
In the accompanying drawings,
Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of the forward portion of the tabulating key levers, showing one of the keys depressed and as having efi'ected a movement of the shifting ribbon mechanism to print on the red stripe or field of the ribbon.

In the Underwood machine, keys 1 depress levers 2 to vibrate bell cranks 3, and swing type bars 4 up to strike rearwardly against the front side of a platen 5. Said platen is mounted on a carriage 6, running on tracks 7, 8, and is driven by a spring barrel 9, and also has a rack 10 meshing with a pinion 11 connected to an escapement wheel 12, the escapement dogs being seen at 12 The rack 10 is hung on arms 13, so that it may be lifted from the pinion 11 to release the carriage.
Tabulator keys 14 are mounted upon levers 15, which, at their rear ends, raise stoprods 16, having stops 17 at their upper ends. These stops may cooperate with interchangeablyadjustable column stops 18, inserted, as required, in notches 19, 20, formed in the top and bottom of a bar 21, which is fixed to the carriage 6.
Each stop-rod has a shoulder 22 cooperating with a universal bar 23, which rocks about a pivot 24, and has an arm 25, which draws down a link 26 and vibrates a lever 27, the latter fulcrumed at 27 and carrying a roll 27 to run upon the under side of the rack bar 10, and lift the latter from the escapement pinion 11, whenever a key 1 1 is depressed.
In the present instance each of the tabulatlng keys 14 is a column-selecting key, and, when depressed, serves to bring the carriage 6 to a predetermined column. One manner of effecting this kind of tabulating consists in having the stop-rods 16 of assorted lengths, and having the column stops 18 of assorted depths, so that, the strokes of the stop-rod being uniform, each rod cooperates with its associated stop, regardless of the posltion of the latter along the rack. first stop-rod 16 in the series (the rod at the The connection between the tabulating keys and the ribbon mechanism, which will hereinafter. be explained, comprises a horizontal rock-shaft 80, extending across the machine beneath the tabulating key levers 15 and forward of the fulcrum 81 of the latter and suitably supported upon the framework. This rock-shaft 80 may be rocked by means of forward and rear universal bars 82, 83, fixed upon the two pairs of arms 84, 85, extending forwardly and rearwardly from the ends of said rock-shaft, the whole making a rocking frame.
Certain of the tabulating key levers 15 have downwardly extending projections or toes 86 forward of the rock-shaft 80 and overlying the universal bar 82, so that when any one of said certain keys is depressed, the rocking frame is rocked to the position seen at Fig. 1. Certain other of the tabulating key levers 15 are provided in rear'of the rock-shaft 80-with downwardly extending projections 102 to depress the universal bar 83 and turn the entire rocking universal bar or frame to the position seen at Fig. 2.
The usual bichrome ribbon mechanism of an Underwood typewriting machine comprises a universal bar 108 operated by heels 109 of the type bars and connected to the dogs 12 which feed the paper carriage 6. Upon said universal baris fixed a bracket 110 which carries a slotted actuator 111 to engage one of two wrists 112, 113, upon a lever 114, to whichis pivoted an upstanding ribbon carrier 115- in front of the platen. The actuator 111 is usually two-armed, and by shifting the same on the bracket 110, the actuator is moved alternately into and out of engagement with one or the other of the Wrists 112 and 113 on the levers 114. This shifting of the actuator 111 is usually efi'ected by a link 116 pivoted at 117 to an arm 118 extending up from a horizontal rock-shaft 119 which extends forwardly and carries at its forward end a two-armed lever 120 having keys 121, 122, and also having a detent 123 to engage a V-spring 124, whereby the lever is held in position. The keys 121 and 122 are able to be effective because of the lost motion of the tabulator key levers 15 before their lugsstrike the universal bars 82, 83.
To this bichrome mechanism is connected a link 125, the latter having at its upper end a slot 126 to engage a pin 127 upon the lever 120. The link is pivoted at its lower end at 128 to an arm 129 fixed upon the rockshaft 80.
When the parts are in the position seen at 7 Figs. 2 and 3, the ribbon mechanism is in position to expose the black stripe of the ribbon to the action of the types; the actuator or yoke 111 being connected to the upper wrist 112; but when any tabulator key with a projection or toe 86 is depressed, as at Fig. 1, the link 125 is thrust up, thus rocking the lever 120 and the rockshaft 119, and vibrating the arm 118 through the link 116, shifting the actuator 111 so that the lower wrist 113 is connected to said actuator, and thus the lever 114 is vibrated at each stroke enough to .carry up the red or special stripe of ribbon to be struck by the yp $n After depressing and releasing any tabulating key 14, the rocking frame 82, 83, etc., of course, remains in the position to which it has been set'by said key, and until another tabulating key is operated, unless a key 121 or 122, as the case may be, is operated; but,
of course, the invention is not limited to a tabulating mechanism of. this character and operation. 7
Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the-invention, and portions of the improvements may be used without others.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a typewriting machine, comprising a carriage, and also comprising a ribbon mechanism shiftable to cause different ribbon stripes to cover the printing point, the combination with tabulating devices including keys and devices connected to the typewriter carriage, of means connected to be operated by said keys to shift said ribbon mechanism.
2. In a typewriting machine, comprising a shiftable ribbon mechanism and a carriage, the combination with tabulating devices connected to the carriage, and including a set of independently operable keys, of means for enabling one of said tabulating keys to shift said ribbon mechanism, and for enablin another of said keys to restore said ribbon mechanism to its first position.
3. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a ribbon mechanism, a ribbon-shifter. a carriage tabulating mechanism including column-selecting keys, means whereby the column-selecting keys may operate said ribbon-shifter, and means whereby said shifter may. be manually operated irrespective of settin by said column-selecting keys.
4. I n a typewriting machine, comprising a shiftable ribbon mechanism, a carriage, and column-selecting tabulator mechanism therefor, the combination with a set of independently operable column-selecting keys forming part of the tabulator mechanism, of an element movable by certain of said keys for shifting said ribbon mechanism, and means for enabling another of said columnselecting keys to restore the ribbon mechanism to its original condition.
5. The combination of a typewriter oarriage, a ta'bulator mechanism for said carriage including a set of keys, a bar operable by any of a plurality of said keys, and a shiftable ribbon mechanism also connected to said bar.
6. The combination with a typewriter carriage, of a tabulating mechanism for said carriage, said tabulating mechanism including a series of keys, a member movable in one direction by certain of said keys and in the opposite direction by another of said keys, and a shiftable ribbon mechanism also connected to said movable member.
7. The combination with a typewriter carriage, of a tabulating mechanism including a series of key levers a universal bar or frame extending along said series of key levers, certain of said key levers constructed to engage the forward portion, and certain of said key levers constructed to engage the rear portion of said universal bar, to move the latter in opposite directions, and a shiftable ribbon mechanism also connected to said universal bar.
8. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a shiftable ribbon mechanism and tabulator key levers, of means mounted on said key levers for positively shifting the ribbon mechanism to either of two colorprinting positions.
9. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a carriage and tabulator key levers therefor, of a polychrome ribbon, and means on said key levers which determines in what color the typewriter shall write.
10. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a carriage and tabulator key levers therefor, of a polychrome ribbon, and individual means on each key lever which determines in what color the typewriter shall write.
11. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a carriage and column-selecting key levers therefor, of a polychrome ribbon, sald key levers being associated-jwith ribbon shifting means in such a way that the actuation of diflerent key levers will shift the ribbon mechanism'so that different colors may be exposed to the printing point, and means for exposing said ribbon to the printing point.
12. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a carriage and tabulator key levers therefor, of a polychrome ribbon shifting mechanism including a shiftable frame comprising parallel bars, said key levers .engaging with said bars to set said ribbon mechanism to expose different colors to the printing point, the setting of said ribbon mechanism being dependent upon the position of said parallel bars.
13. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a carriage and tabulator key levers therefor, of a polychrome ribbon shifting mechanism including a shiftable frame comprising two bars, certain of said key levers engaging with one of said bars to set the ribbon mechanism for one color, the other key levers engagingwith the other bar to shift the ribbon mechanism for the other color.
14. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a carriage and tabulating mechanism including key levers, of a polychrome ribbon, ribbon shifting mechanism including a rocking frame with which said ke levers cooperate to shift the ribbon shi .ting
' mechanism so as to enable printing in different colors.
15. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a carriage and tabulating mechanism including key levers, of a polychrome ribbon, ribbon shifting mechanism including a universal element, said key levers engaging with said universal element diflerently to shift the ribbon mechanism so as to enable printing in different colors.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with a carriage and tabulating mechanism including key levers, of a polychrome ribbon, ribbon shifting mechanism including a universal element, each key lever having a projection thereon, said projections being differently arranged lengthwise of the key levers, and engaging with said universal element to shift the ribbon mechanism so as to enable-printing in different colors.
17. In a typewriting machine, the combi' nation with type keys, a traveling carriage, and a polychrome ribbon, of column-selecting key levers, and extensions on saidcolumn-selecting key levers which determine whether the type keys shall print in red or black. v
18. In a typewriting machine, the combination with type keys, a travelin carriage, and polychrome ribbon, of tabu ator keys, ribbon shifting mechanism under the control of said tabulator keys, the arrangement of parts being such that the printing color may be changed by said tabulator keys and manually changeable at will after having been shifted by said tabulator keys.
19. In a typewriting'machine, the combination with a polychrome ribbon, of ribbon-shifting mechanism, carriage-positioning means, means adapted to shift said ribbon mechanism by positioning the carriage, and separate means for then shifting the ribbon mechanism to its first position without disturbing said positioning means.
20. In a typewritmg machine, the combination with a polychrome ribbon, of ribbon shifting mechanism, tabulator mechanism including a series of key levers, means whereby said ribbon mechanism is variabl shiftable by said key levers, and ribbon shi t keys, the parts being so arranged that the ribbon mechanism may be shifted by either one of the ribbon shift keys without disturbing said tabulator key levers.
21. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a carriage, a tabulator including. key levers, and a polychrome ribbon, of ribbon-shifting mechanism operated by said levers, lost-motion connections between said levers and said mechanism, and a fingerpiece for positively shifting said mecha- IllSIIl.
22. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a carriage, a tabulator including key levers, and a polychrome ribbon, of ribbon-shifting mechanism, means normally out of touch with said levers, whereb the shifting mechanism is operated by saidle- -vers, and a manual device for operating said shiftingv mechanism, and adapted to reset it after the operation and return of any key lever.
23. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a carriage and a polychrome ribbon, of a tabulator for said carriage including key levers, ribbon shifting mechanism, and a member movable in one direction by certain of said key levers and in another direction by other of said key levers, said member being connected to said ribbon shifting mechanism.
24. In a typewriting machine, the combi nation With a carriage and a tabulator including a set of independentlyoperable key levers, of a ribbon device, means on one of said tabulator key levers to shift said shiftable ribbon device, and means on another of said key levers to restore said ribbon device to its first position.
25, In a typewriting machine, the combination with a carriage and a ta bulator comprising a series of key levers, of a ribbon shifting mechanism, a universal bar or frame extending along said series of key levers, certain of said key levers constructed to engage the forward portion, and certain of said key levers constructed to engage the rear portion of said universal bar to move the latter in opposite directions, a connection for said universal bar to said shiftable ribbon mechanism, and a detent to hold said shiftable ribbon mechanism in various positions to which it is set by said universal bar.
26. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage comprising a platen, a polychrome ribbon, keys for shifting said ribbon, a tabulator comprising keys, and a shifta'ble device connected to said ribbon shift key under the control of said tabulator keys.
27. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a carriage and a tabulator therefor, said tabulator comprising key levers, of an extension on one of said key levers, an extension on another of said key levers, ribbon mechanism, and means controlled by said extensions for varying the setting of said ribbon mechanism.
