CENTRIFUGAL CASTING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Feb. 26, 1918.
Application filed March 9, 1917. Serial No. 153,658.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Dnrrrnr SENSAUD on LAVAUD, a citizen of the United States of Brazil, residing at Sao Paulo, Brazil, have invented new and useful Improvements in Centrifugal Casting-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to centrifugal casting machines.
My invention has for its principal object to provide means for casting piston rings andpther small articles, and especially thosehaving non-concentric inner and outer peripheries, in quantities and at a rapid rate; and consists in the combination, construction and arrangements of parts herein illustrated, described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts in all views, I have illustrated a machine particularly adapted for making piston rings as a preferred embodiment of my invention, and,

Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken approximately on the line 22 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a partial vertical central section, taken approximately on the lines 3-3 of Figs. 1 and 2;

Fig. 5 is an end view, and Fig. 6 a section on the line 66 of Fig. 5, respectively, of a piston rin cast in the machine.
In the orm of apparatus shown in the accompanying drawings, the machine comprises a bed late 1 upon which are mounted the standar s 2 carrying longitudinal rods 3 upon which sleeves 4 are slidably mounted. The sleeves 4 carry an axle 5. upon which is revolubly mounted a hub 6, and pinions 8 which are keyed to the axle, and are adapted to be revolved with the axle when the handle 7 is turned, this causing the pinions to travel upon the racks 9 of the longitudinal bars 3, causing the sleeves, axle, hub, and members carried thereby, to be horizontall moved in a direction parallel tothe longitudinal bars 3.
The hub6 is free to revolve upon the axle 5 and a pin 10 is provided upon one of the sleeves 4 adapted to en ge suitable notches in the hub 6 to maintam the hub in the desired angular position. The hub 6 carries '14 which are preferably mounted upon the collar l3,'fitting grooves in the outer surface thereof and held in position by pins 15 which allow of some movement of the members 14 toward and away from the axis of the collar. T hese clamping members project outwardly from the axle 5 and preferably have beveled ends 16 adapted to engage a friction clutch 17 by means of which the mold carrying chuck is revolved.
The means for revolving the chuck comprise a friction clutch 17 mounted upon ball bearings 18 suitably supported upon one end of the base plate, for instance by means of the end plate 19. This clutch 17 may be revolved by any suitable source of power, as
by means of a driven flexible cable 20.

the form shown, each mold comprises a surface 22 for the outer periphery of the casting and a surface 23 against which one of the side surfaces of the casting is formed, while the other side surface of the casting is formed against the back of the next adjacent mold, a series of the molds being placed in the .chuck at one time as shown in the drawing. The friction clutch member 17 is provided with an extension 24 adapted to fit within the end of the chuck and bear against the series of molds, pressing these down against a spring 25 which seats against the collar 13, and exerts upon the to be made is formed eccentric to the axis 26 fed from the funnel 27, which trough is rotatably supported upon a bracket 28 and extends through a central opening of the clutch 17 to the interior of the chuck member and through central openings of the molds extending the entire length of the series of molds. This trough is revolubly carried upon the bracket 28 and provided with a handle 29 by means of which it may be rotated to discharge the molten metal from the opening 30 into the molds.
Extending from the end plate 19 downward along the circumference of the circle through which the outer edges of the chucks revolve there may be provided a plate 31 which will prevent the molds from being discharged from the chucks when the latter are rotated upon the axle 5, and at the end of this plate 31 is a receiving table 32 upon which the molds containing the castings are deposited.
This apparatus is suitable for casting objects of various shapes under centrifugal force but is particularly adapted to the casting of piston rings and other articles having substantially circular inner and outer peripheries, which peripheries need not be concentric. In Fig. 4 a mold 21 for a piston ring is shown on an enlarged scale, illustrating how the surface 22 against which the outer periphery of the casting is about which the mold is to be revolved. In dotted lines is shown the outer molding surface of the next succeeding mold of the series, this being placed so as to bring the greater quantity of metal upon the opposite side of the axis in order to balance the operation of the machine.
The operation of the machine is as follows: The chuck which is projectin in an upward direction is filled with mo ds 21, these being arranged alternately as indicated in Fig. 4 to balance the operation; the pin 10 is then released, and the chucks revolved upon the axle 5 to bring the uppermost chuck through an angle of 90 opposite to the-friction clutch 17 in which position it is held by the pin 10. The handle 7 is then revolved, causing the beveled ends 16 of the clamping members of the chuck to I be advanced into and engage the clutch 17.
The clutch 17 being revolved by the cable 20 causes the revolution of the chuck upon its bearing 12, and molten metal is poured into the funnel 27, filling the trough 26 from which it is dumped into the molds by rotation of the trough by means of the handle 29. The molds during the operation are held firmly against one another by the springs 25 pressing them against the extension 24 of the clutch 17. a
As soon as the metal has time to harden, the handle 7 is revolved, causing the pinions 8 to travel upon the rack 9, and withdrawing the chuck from contact with the clutch 17. The pin 10 is then released, and the chucks given a quarter turn about the axle 5, the uppermost chuck in the meanwhile having been filled with molds as before,
the result of this quarter turn being to bring the next chuck opposite the clutch 17, and the chuck in which the castings have just been formed over the table 32 upon which the castings and molds are deposited. 4. A centrifugal casting machine comprising a series of molds, a revoluble chuck adapted to receive and rotate said molds simultaneously, and a filling trough adapted to be introduced within and withdrawn from said molds.
5. In a centrifugal machine for casting piston rings and like articles, molds for forming the outer surface and one end surface of a ring, and a chuck adapted to hold a series of said molds arranged so that the reverse side of a mold serves to form the other end surface of the ring cast in the next adjacent mold.
6. In a centrifugal casting machine, the combination comprising means for rotating molds, a series of molds, and means for bringing said molds successively into position to be rotated by said rotating means.

In a centrifugal casting machine having molds, a chuck adapted to receive and rotate molds, comprising a collar having longitudinal peripheral grooves, clamping members fitting said grooves and pivotally attached to said collar, and extending longitudinally beyond. the collar, said members having eveled ends, and a friction clutch adapted to engage said beveled ends and cause rotation of the chuck.
12. In a centrifugal casting machine, the I combination comprising a frame, a hub rotatably mounted thereon, a series of chucks rotatably carried by said hub, molds adapted to be carried and revolved by said chucks, a driven revoluble clutch, means for rotating said hub to bring said chucks successively opposite said clutch, means for bringing said clutch and opposed chuck into operative relationship, and a table disposed to receive the molds and castings from one chuck as a following chuck is brought. opposite the clutch.
13. A centrifugal casting machine comprising a series of molds, and a revoluble chuck adapted to. hold said molds axially in line and to rotate them simultaneously about their axes.
