Description

E E. HARRIS.
COMBHQED SALT AND PEPPER SHAKER.
APPLICATION FILED ocT n. 1915.
Patenwd' Feb. 26, 1918.
UNIETED STA EDWARD E.- HARRIS, OF TULSA, OKLAHOMA.
COMBINED SALT AND PEPPER, SHAKER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 26,1913.
Application filed October 1'7, 1916. 7 Serial No. 126,146.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD E. HARRIS, a citizen of theUnited States of America, residing at Tulsa, in the county of lulsa and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Salt and Pepper Shakers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in combined salt and pepper shaker and its primary object is the provision of a unitary device for separately dispensing salt and pepper, the structure being easy and inexpensive to manufacture.
It is also designed to provide a salt and pepper shaker in which a single closure member controls the outflow of contents from different compartments, the structure being such that both or either of the compartments may be closed although it is impossible to have both of the compartments completely open for dispensing from both of the same at one time.
In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is a central longitudinal sectional view of the device,
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the cover member,
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of the cover member,
Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the inner or stationary cap of the top member and Fig. 5 is a top plan view of the holder or body with the securing ring mounted thereon.
Referring more in detail to the drawing, a holder or body m is provided formed of vitreous material such as glass, arranged with a bottom 10 and a central diametrically arranged partition g, whereby the holder is divided into opposite equal sized compartments 11 and 12 for suitable condiments.
A cover member 13 is arranged for the device comprising an inner cap 6 adapted for seating upon the upper end of the body m and having a central diametrically arranged socket (Z while an outer cap a is journaled upon the cap 6. The outer cap a is arranged with a transverse rib c flaring at both ends by reason of the arcuate shape of its opposite faces 14, it being understood that a pivot-pin is centrally arranged through the rib c and portion cl being secured in the top of the partition 9.
The depending flanges of the caps a and '6 are shiftably connected by means of interfitting beads 15upon the said caps, while opposite ears z' are carried by the outer cap a for convenience in grasping in shifting the said outer cap upon the inner cap Z). The inner cap 6 has a plurality of perforations 16 therethrough for co-mmuunicating with the holder compartments 11 and 12 while similar perforations 17 are arranged through the cap a adapted to register with the perforations 16 over one of the said compartment-s at a time, that is, all of the perforations 17 may be positioned out of alinement with the perforations l6 and at which time none of the contents of the holder can be dispensed. The cap a may be shifted however by means of the ears i for bringing the perforations 17 over the perforations 16 at the top of the compartment 11, at which times the perforations l6 and 17 over the compartment 12 are closed. This operation may be reversed for closing the compartment l1 and opening the compartment 12 for dispensing the contents thereof.
Slots Z are arranged in the outer edge of the cap a at opposite sides of the ears 2' through which lugs 18 extend from the cap I), which limit the relative movement between the caps a and b and denote at a glance the positions of the dispensing means.
A threaded ring c engages the upper portion of the holder m and overlaps the bottom flange it of the inner cap 6 the said flange resting upon a shoulder 0 formed at the open end of the body m by reducing the same. A serviceable condiment holder is provided in which both pepper and salt may be held for immediate use without being liable to dispense both condiments at one time accidentally.
What I claim as new is In combination with a holding body having a transverse central partition forming opposite compartments therein, an inner cap upon the open end of the body with an upstanding socket secured over the end of the partition and with perforations in the cap registering with each compartment of the body, an outer cap journaled upon the inner cap having a transverse rib with arcuate sides forming flaring end portions, the said rib overlying said socket, adapted for permitting relative oseillatory' movement of said caps, operating ears upon the outer cap, a ring for securing the inner cap to said body, a pivot pin for the outer cap centrally "secured in the outer endof the par,- tition extending through said socket and rib, the outer cap having slots at its outer ec ge, the inner cap having upstanding liniiting lugs extendingthrough said slots, the
Copies of thispatent maybe obtained for open end of the body being reduced forming a shoulder upon Which the inner cap is seated and the outer end of the partition projecting beyond the plane of the end of the body.
