To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM G. DEMMTEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Williamsport, in the county of Lycomlng and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holders for Cord, Thread, Yarn, and the like; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in holders for cord, thread, yarn and the like, the object of the invention being to provide a simple container for a ball or spool of cord or the like whereby the same will be thoroughly protected, and to provide etticient means therein for supporting the cord, thread or yarn so that it may be withdrawn and so that parts of the container may be utilized in applying tension to retard the withdrawal of the material, or to prevent the same from unwinding or becoming accidentally withdrawn when the device is not in use.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a View in elevation of a holder embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a view showing the container or holder in section and the cord, thread or yarn and its holder in elevation, and Fig. 4 is a sectional view showing the cord, thread or yarn holder in the form of a spool of conventional type.

1 represents a box or container which will be made of flexible material, such as celluloid. The container 1 may be made cylindrical in form with an integral, slightly concave bottom 2, and a removable cover 3 of flexible material, such as celluloid, is provided to fit neatly over the open end of the cylindrical body. A hole 4 is provided to permit withdrawal of the cord, thread or yarn and this hole may be made in the cylindrical wall of the container.

A core or spool 5 is located within the container and is of such height as to extend approximately from the bottom to the top thereof. In the construction shown in Figs, 1, 2 and 3, the core or spool 5 is made bellshaped in form so that its lower portion shall be conical, and said core is made with a central bore through which a spindle 6 passes. The spindle 6 also extends through the bottom 2 of the container and is provided at its lower end with a head 7, between which and the bottom 2, a disk or washer 8 may be located. The upper end of the spindle 6 is threaded as at 8, and passes freely through and beyond the cover 3 for the reception of a knurled thumb nut 10 which bears upon said cover.

A ball of cord or the like 11 is forced tightly upon the core or spool 5 and the free end of the cord is threaded through the hole 4 in the cylindrical wall of the container.

By screwing the thumb nut downwardly on the threaded upper end of the spindle, the flexible cover 3 will be caused to engage the upper end of the core or spool and the bottom of the container being also flexible, said core or spool will be held with suiiicient friction to retard the unwinding of the cord, and thus any desired tension may be provided, and the core or spool may be tightly clamped between the top and bottom of the container when the device is not in use.

In the form of the invention shown in Fig. 4, a spool 12 of conventional type is shown, but in other respects, the construction is the same as that hereinbefore described.

Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:

1. An article of manufacture comprising a container provided with an end of flexible material and having a hole for the passage of cord or thread, a spindle passing through said container for the accommodation of a spool, said spindle having a threaded end portion and a thumb nut on said threaded portion of the spindle and adapted to engage said flexible end of the container and press the same against the spool to apply frictional resistance to the turning of the latter.
