WLADYSLAW S. MIELCAREK, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
ADJUSTABLE CBUTCH.
Specification of To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, \VLADYSLAW S. Mint.- CAREK, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Adjustable Crutch, of which the following is a speci cation.
The subject of this invention is an adjustable crutch, and the objects of the invention are first, to provide a crutch which may be adjusted to various lengths, second, to provide means for clamping the crutch in its adjusted positions, third, to provide a simple, etlicient, and durable crutch.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts an in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment o the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
A practical embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in elevation of the crutch, parts being in section;
Fig. 2 is a cross section on of Fig. 1.
Referring of reference:
The crutch is made up of side bars 1, of the usual form which are connected by the ordinary hand grip The upper ends 0' the side bars 1 take into sockets formed at each end of a head block 3.
The head block 3 is provided with an aperture 1 near each end thereof, and opening at the upper and lower faces 0' tl block. This block also has formed therein spaced transverse apertures 5 separate by a wall 6, and in each aperture is positioned a knurled thumb nut 7.
A shoulder rest 8 is adjustably mounted on the head block 3, and this rest has down wardly projecting legs 9 which are slotted longitudinally and each of which slides in one of the apertures 4: A threaded shaft 10 also projects downwardly from the center of the shoulder rest and through an aperture formed in the head block 3. This aperture communicates with the spaced apertures 5 and the knurled thumb nuts are threaded on the shaft 10.

1917. Serial No. 200,390.
Set screws 11 may pass through the longitudinal slots of the legs 9 and apertures formed in the side bars 1 and head blocks 3 for the purpose of clamping the legs 9 in any adjusted position.
The lower ends of the side bars 1 take into sockets formed in a foot piece or casting 12 which is formed with a transverse aperture 13 therein, in which aperture turns a knurled nut 1 1. The tapering lower end of the casting 12 is threaded as at 15, and this end is slit longitudinally, as indicated at 16, and on this end is threaded a tapering nut 17.
A rod 18 is slidably mounted in a central aperture which extends longitudinally of the casting 12, and this rod is threaded to receive the nut 1% by which it may be a justed. The lower end or foot of this rod 18 is, preferably provided with a rubber tip 19.
In practice the device is operated in the 7 following manner:
To adjust the crutch the thumb nuts 7 are loosened and the set screws 11 released and the thumb nuts operated in the usual manner to raise or lower the shoulder piece 8 to accommodate the length of arm 0' the patient. The thumb nuts are then against the division plate or bar 6 to clamp the parts in place. The set screws are now tightened.
The rod 18 is adjusted to the proper length by loosening the tapered nut 17 and adjusting the rod by manipulating the thumb nut 11. \Vhcn properly adjusted to the height of the patient, the tapered nut 17 is again screwed in place to draw the tapered end together and clamp the rod 18 firmly.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and sought by Letters Patent, is:
1. A crutch, including side bars and a hand grip connecting the side bars, a head block mounted on the bars and provided with apertures, a shoulder piece, a leg extending from the shoulder piece and passing through an aperture of the head block, and means in the head block and engaging the leg for adjusting the shoulder piece.
2. A crutch, e bars and a hand grip connecting a head block mounted on the bars and provided with apertures, a shoulder piece on the head block, there being legs extending from the shoulder piece and sliding in the apertures,
means for adjusting the shoulder piece, means for clamping the legs to the head to the lower ends hand grip connecting the side bars, a head block tures, legs extending from the shoulder piece and sliding in certain of the apertures, said legs set screws passmg through the slots vfor binding the legs tothe head block, a screw extending from the shoulder piece and entering one of the apertures,'thumb nuts threaded on the screw and engaging the head block: for adjusting the shoulder piece, a foot piece secured to @optea of this patent may be obtained for five cents each. by
the lower ends of the side bars, and a rod adjustably mounted in the foot piece.
4. A crutch'including side bars and a hand'grip connecting the side bars, a head mounted on the bars and provided with apertures, a shoul er piece on the block, there being legs extending from the shoulder piece and sliding in the apertures, means for adjusting the shoulder piece, and means for clamping the legs to the head lock.
