Be it known that I, FRANKLIN E. Roest-1, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Commodes; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains t0 -make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the lettersand figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this speciiication.

This invention relates to improvements in commodes or water closet fixtures. The object of the invention is to provide an article of this character which combines elements of sanitation and convenience as will hereinafter appear from the description to follow. The article is adapted for use in localities where sanitary sewers do not exist, for example in rural districts and small villages where neither water works nor sanitary sewers are found. The prevailing characten istics of the invention consists in a construction of the receptacle which renders it odorless as well as the facility for cleansing the. same. To these ends the commode, or receptacle, is especially constructed so that it may be located on the floor of the apartment wherein it is installed, with an outlet portion projecting below the floor with a suitable pipe arrangement for the refuse to be conducted away from the building into a vault located beneath the ground. The receptacle is especially constructed so as to enable a portion thereof to be projected through an opening in the door. The device is a fixture and has no removable parts which, in devices of this character, are more or less annoying owing to its being necessary to remove the same from the premises.

Before describing the device in detail reference is made to the accompanying drawings, of which Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of the commode on the line 1-1 of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the commode. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1 and Fig. 4 is a detailed view of the bracketwhich holds the valve-operating device.

In a particular description of my invention similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts.

In the description and the accompanying drawings, 1 designates a metallic casing the bottoni 2 of which is concaved and has a central opening which aHords an outlet therefrom. This outlet is closed by a valve 4 which will be again referred to. The casing 1 on one side thereof has an extension 5 which provides a chamber 6 which projects through an opening 7 in the `floor 8. An in tegral spout or pipe 9 also projects from the concaved bottom 2 below the valve 4 and the chamber 6 opens into the pipe 9 and provides suitable space for the valve-operati ng device to be presently described. The casing 1 so provided with the chambered extension 5 and the outlet pipe 9 is held in position with these parts projected through the opening in the ioor, by means of an angle piece 10 which extends around the lower portion of the casing at the floor line and is made secure to the ioor 8. On the interior of the casing 1 at the mouth thereof is an angle piece 11 which reinforces the mouth of the vessel and provides a suitable support for an apertured plate 12 which is suitably attached at the mouth of the receptacle. This plate 12 reducesthe size of the opening or mouth of the vessel and a suitable packing 13 is secured to said plate 12 around the opening therein. The seat portion 14 rests upon the packing ring 13 and upon said seat portion 14 a further packing ring 15 is secured. The cover 16 rests upon the packing ring 15 and there is thus provided by the means of these packing rings 13 and 15 an effectual seal to prevent odor from escaping when the cover 1G is lowered. The seat portion 14 and the cover 16 have a hinge connection above the apertured plate 12 by means of double hinges 17 which are mounted upon projections 18 on the plate 12. 19 designates a fixed tube which projects through the bottom 2 of the receptacle and communicates with the chanr ber 6 below said bottom. Extending through this tube 19 is a rod 20. The tube 1'9 is sealed at its upper end by means of suitable rubber packing 21 and the rod 20 projects through a suitable opening in said packing 21. The lower end of the rod 2O is pivoted to a lever 22 which has a fulcrum on a bracket 23 secured to the bottom of the re eeptacle near the opening therein. The lever 22 has a connection with the valve 4 through the stem 24 of said valve. The connection with said lever being by means of a pin 25 projecting from the valve stem and entering an elongated opening 26 in the end of said lever. The valve stem is mounted and guided in a spider 27 which consists of A,four arms which are attached to the bottom of the receptacle near the margin of the opening therein. The rod 20 which operates the valve has its upper end screw threaded to re- I ceive a nut 28. A bracket 29 holds the rod in position to close the valve. This bracket 29 is secured to the plate 12 in proximity to the rubber packing 22 and it is provided with a slot 29 which receives the rod 20 with the nut 28 screwed therein upon the upper portion of said bracket to firmly hold the valve 4 on its seat. -Vhen it becomes desirable to open the valve to cleanse the receptacle the nut 28 is loosened suliiciently to enable the rod 20 to be lowered in the tube 19 and by this lowering operation of said rod the valve 4 is elevated from its seat. The rubber packing 21 through which the rod 20 projects is sufficiently elastic to enable the slight lateral movement of the rod in detaching it from the bracket 29. When the valve is thus opened the receptacle may be iushed or cleansed. A desirable cleansing solution of a disinfecting character'may be thrown into the receptacle and the contents thereof carried through the pipe 9. The pipe 9 extends out of the premises through the ground or it may connect with an extension pipe 9 which passes into the ground outside of the premises and discharges into a vault 30 which has an open bottom above a suitable foundation of gravel 31. The vault 30 may be provided with an over-flow pipe 32 leading into'the soil and the receptacle 1 is provided with a vent pipe 33.

Having described my invention, I claim:
