In the particular form shown, the pin tumbler cylinder lock is adapted to shift a laterally sliding member mounted at the back of the plate or escutcheon to which the cylinder lock is applied, but the invention can also be used in other connections. i
The primary object of the invention is to provide a simple, cheap and efficient cylinder lock construction applicable to the purposesabove mentioned, and more particularly to furnish a cylinder lock in which the part to be operated, such as a sliding bolt or the like, can be actuated very conveniently from the front end of the key plug rather than the rear end thereof.
To these and other ends, the invention consists in the novel features and combinations of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.

in the drawings l have shown my imtill rovements applied to the electric controlmg mechanism of an automobile, mounted a plate or escutcheon in which is mounted a cylinder lock which controls a laterally movable slide at the back of the escutcheon or dash plate, which slide when in one position locks the mechanism in an inoperative position, while when the slide is in another position such mechanism can be freely operated. The particular mechanism controlled by the slide forms no part of my invention, and for that reason l have not illustrated or described it in detail. My present invention refers particularly to the cylinder lock con struction and to the manner in which the cylinder lock is mounted-and arranged relatively to the escutcheon and to the slide or other element.
In the drawings, the dash plate or escutcheon 12 is shown as provided with screw holes 13, by means of which it can be applied to the dashboard or instrument board of the automobile, and slidably mounted at the rear of the plate or escutcheon 12 is a controlling slide 14 guided laterally on the rear surface of the escutcheon in any suitable manner, for example, by means of rivets v latter. The slide is held at the limit of its movement in one direction by means of. a stop spring 16 and it is held at the limit of its movement in the opposite direction by a similar stop spring 16. The cylinder lock 17 is arranged for the most part at the rear of the escutcheon, but it has a key plug 18 which extends to the front face of the escutcheon where it operates in an opening 19, and this key plug is provided with the usual keyway 20 into which the key 21 may be entered from the front face of the escutcheon.
'The cylinder lock has a casing 22 in which the key plug 18 is rotatable, and it is provided with sectional spring pressed tumblers 23 of the usual kind, the action of which it will not be necessary to describe. These tumblers are adapted to operate in the usual pin tumbler extension 24 on the casing 22. The cylinder lock is attached to and supported from the escutcheon 12 by means of rivets 25 having shanks which pass rearwardly through holes in the escutcheon and through perforated lugs 26 which extend laterally from the cylinder lock on opposite sides of the front portion thereof. "hese lugs 26 are usually cast integral with the cylinder lock casing, and their front. faces are at such a distance behind the front face of the key plug 18- that when the lugs are held tightly against the rear face of the .escutcheon by the rivets 25, the front face of the key plug will'be substantially flush with, or will project slightly outward from, the outer face of the escutcheon. The front faces of the lugs are located considerably in advance of the pin tumbler extension 24, and the lugs are offset so as to provlde between them a recess 27 at the front of the lock which accommodates a cam 28 for onerating the slide 14. This cam 28 has an. opening 29 in which the key plug is inserted, said opening being of substantially the same diaineter as the key plug, and it is firmlv held between the body portion of the lock casing and a collar or flange 29 on the forward end of the key plug, which collar or flange prevents rearward movement of the key plug relatively to the casing. The key plug is held against forward longitudinal movement,. after the parts are assembled, by
means of a small metal ring 30 which is-.
sprung into place in an annular groove 31 atthe rear endof the key plug, which rear .wall of the key plug, and into a notch 33 with which the cam is provided, said notch 33 communicating with the opening 29 as shown in Fig. 8. At the upper part ofthe cam between the front of the p1n tumbler extension and the rear face of the escutcheon an operating projection 34' is provided, which is adapted to cotiperate with talons 35 cut in the lower central part of the plate 14, as shown more particularly in F ig: 4. A stop projection 36 on the cam 28 is adapted to abut the adjacent surface 37 of one of the lugs 26 when the tumblers are lined up with the tumbler sockets and to prevent clockwise rotation of the key.plug and cam with respect to Fig. 4, although turning in a counter-clockwise direction is permitted.
In Figs. 1 and 2, I have shown the slide or element 14 in what may be termed the locking position. When it occupies this position, the cam of the cylinder lock occupies the position shown in F ig. 4, and the key can be freely withdrawn owing to the fact that the tumblers are in line with the tumbler sockets. In order to move the slide 14 to the unlocked or operating position, the key is inserted and turned about one-eighth of a turn in a counter-clockwise direction with respect to Fig. 4, and the operating projection 34 on the cam by engaging the talons 35 shifts the slide 14 to the limit of its movement towardv the left with reference to Fig. 4. In this form, the key cannot be withdrawn while the slide is left in the operating position because when the key plug is turned to the position shown in Fig 3 the tumbler sections in the key plug are out of line with their sockets in the tumbler extension.
In the form shown in Fig. 9, the cam 28 is omitted and a pin 32 driven into the key plug at the front end of the latter, where it projects out of the body of the lock, takes the place of a cam. This pin 32 cotiperates with a central operating projection 38 on the slide 14 In this case, a full revolution of the key is necessary to shift the slide from one position to the other, and the key can be withdrawn with the slide in either of its two positions, as will be understood.
In the modification shown in Fig. 10, the operation is substantially the same as that described in connection with Fig. 9. In this last case a lazy cam 39 is interposed between a radial pi'n 32 on the key plug and the slide, which in this instance, has talons 40 to receive a radial projection 41 on the lazy cam.

6. in a lock, an escutcheoii having an opening therein, a pin tumbler lock having lugs secured to said escutcheon, the body portion of said pin tumbler lock between said lugs being spaced from the rear surface of the escutcheon, said pin tumbler lock having a key plug extending forwardly out of the body portion. of said pin tumbler look into the opening of the escutcheon, an op-: erating projection on said hey plug intermediate the rear face of the escutcheon and the body portion of the pin tumbler lock, and means shiftable by said projection.
7., lin look, a mounting plate, a pin tumbler lock at the rear of the same having forwardly projecting lugs for securing it to said plate, said pin tumbler look also having a forwardly projecting key plug extending from. the casing out into an opening of said plate, and an operating projection on the forwardly projecting portion of the key plug immediately at the rear of said plate.
8, in a lock, an escutcheon, a pin tumbler lock having its body portion spaced from the rear face of said escutcheon, means for securing said pin tumbler lock to said escutcheon, a lrey'plug in said pin tumbler lock extending forwardly therefrom, through said escutcheon, an element to be operated, located at the rear of said escutchcon, and means of connection between said element and the forward end portion of said key plug,

In a lock, an escutcheon, a pin tumbler lock havingits body portion spaced'from the rear face of said escutcheon, means for securing said pin. tumbler lock to said escutcheon, a key plug in said pin tumbler lock extending forwardly therefrom, through said escutcheon, anelement to be operated located at the rear of said escutcheon, and means of connection between said element and the forward end portion of said key plug, comprising a cam mounted on the forward. end portion of the key plug immediately behind the escutcheon and in front of the body portion of said pin tumbler lock.
10, In a look, a mounting plate having an opening, a cylinder look at the rear of the same having a casing, a key plug extending forwardly out of the casing, forwardly projecting securing lu s on the Casing whereby it is attached to said plate with said casing spaced an appreciable distance from the rear face of said plate, said hey plug'extending into the opening of said plate, an element to be operated, located at the rpar of said plate, and an operating pro ect1on for said element secured to the forwardly pro ecting portion of thekey plug immediately at the rear of said plate and in front of said casing.
11. A pin tumbler lock, comprising a body or casing having forwardly projecting securing lugs, and a forwardly projecting key plug extending from the casing between said securing lugs.
12. A pin tumbler lock, comprising a body or casing having forwardly projecting securing lugs at the sides, a forwardly projecting key plug between said securing lugs, and an operating projection on said key plug between said securing lugs.
13. A pin tumbler lock comprising a body or casing having a plurality of pin tumblers, a key plug rotatable in said casing and cooperating with said pin tumblers but extending forwardly out of said casing, and an operating projection on the forward end portion of said key plug at the front of said casing.

In a pin tumbler lock, the combination of a casing, forwardly projecting securing lugs on opposite sides of said casing, pin tumblers in said casing, a key plug rotatable in said casing and cooperating with said pin tumblers, said key plug projecting forwardly out of said casing between said securing lugs, and an operating projection on the forward end portion of the key plug between said securing lugs.

In a pin tumbler lock, the-combination of a casing, forwardly projecting securing lugs on opposite sides of said casing, pin tumblers in said casing, a key plug rotatable in said casing and cooperating with said pin tumblers, said key plug projecting forwardly out of said casing between said securing lugs, and an operating projection on the forward end portion of the key plug between said securing lugs, said operating projection adapted to engageione of said secur- 1ng lugs to limit the swinging movement of- 16. In a look, a mounting plate having an opening, a cylinder lock at the rear of said plate having a casing spaced rearwardly from the plate, said cylinder look also having a key plug extending forwardly out of the easing into the opening of said plate, an element to be operated mounted at the rear of said plate, and means of connection between the key plug and said element, located between the rear face of said plate and the front of said said casing.
17 In a look, a mounting plate having an opening, a cylinder look at the rear of said plate having a casing spaced rearwardly from the plate, said cylinder look also having a key plug extending forwardly out of the casing into the opening of said plate, an element to be operated mounted at the rear of said plate, and means of connection between the key plug and said element, located between the rear face of said plate and the front of said casing, said means of connection including a pin projecting from the key plug.

Ina look, a mounting plate having an opening, a cylinder look at the rear of said plate having a casing spaced rearwardly from the plate, said cylinder lock also'having a key plug extending forwardly out of the casing into the opening of said plate, an element to be operated mounted at the rear of said plate, and means of connection between the key plug and said element, located between the rear face of said plate and the front of said casing, said means of connection, including a pin projecting from the key plug, and a cam operated by said pin.
19. 'l'he combination of a mounting plate, a cylinder lock applied tothe rear face thereof and having a key plug, an element to be operated mounted at the rear of said plate, and means of connection between the forward end of the key plug and said element, including a pin driven into an opening in the key plug.
20. The combination of a mounting plate, a cylinder lock applied to the rear face thereof and having a key plug, an element to be operated, mounted at the rear of said plate, and means of connection between the forward end of the key plug and said element, including a pin driven into an opening in the key plug and a cam operated by said pin.
21. The combination of a mounting plate, a cylinder lock applied to the rear face thereof and having a key plug, an element to be operated, mounted at the rear of said plate, and means of connection between the forward end of the key plug and said element, including a pin driven into an opening in the key plug, a cam operated by said pin, and stop means for said cam.
22. In a look, a mounting plate having an opening, a pin tumbler look at the rear of the same having a casing including a pin tumbler extension and also having a key plug extending forwardly from said easing into said opening, and an operating projection fixed to the forward end of the key lug between said pin tumbler extension and the rear face of said plate.
23. The combination of a mounting plate, a pin tumbler lock applied to the rear face thereof and having a forwardly projecting key plug, and an operating cam embracing the forwardly projecting end of the key plug and operated thereby.
24. In a lock, the combination of an element to be operated, a pin tumbler lock having a casing and a key plug, said key plug extending out of said casing at one end, an
operating cam for said element embracing nauaaya the outwardly projecting end portion of said key plug, and a radlal pin on the key plug cooperating with said cam.
25. The combination of a supporting plate having an opening, a cylinder lock at the rear of said plate having a casing and a key plug extending forwardly out of said casing,
the body portion ofsaid casing being spaced rearwardly from said supporting plate, and
said key plug extending into the opening of said plate, alocking device mounted on the forward end portion of the key plug in the space between the casing body and the rear surface of the plate, and means for securing said cylinder lock to said plate.
