To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LINGRAM LESLIE, citizen of the United States, residing at John, in the county of Pike and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harrows, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in harrows, and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character wherein rotary disks or blades are employed; and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby the soil may be readily and eifectively'treated as the device passes thereover.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved means of this general character including a harrow section mounted for movement in a vertical direction, together with means for imparting movement to said section in one direction for rendering the same inoperative, as the occasions of practice may require.
lt is also an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this character wherein the harrow section is yieldably held in operative engagement with the ground so that said section may .have upward movement in the event the same is brought into engagement with an undue 0bstruction, such as a stone or stump, to compensate for such obstruction.
Furthermore it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character which is of a wheel-supported type, and wherein novel and improved nie-ans are employed under control of a harrow section for working the ground rearwardly of the device and rearwardly of the supporting wheels.
The invention has for a still further object to provide a wheel-supported device of this general character wherein novel and improved means are employedfor controlling the direction of travel of the device independently of the draft animals, and whichV serves to render the device capable of efficient use when working on a hillside.
T he invention consists in the details ofv construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my iniproved harrow whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for forth.
The novel features of the invention will hereinafter be delinitely claimed.

As disclosed in the accompanying drawings; l denotes an elongated beam disposed transversely of the direction of travel of the device, and which has adjustably engaged with the opposite end portions thereof the depending brackets 2, arranged in pairs. Operatively engaged with each pair of brackets 2 is a swinging frame F, substantially U shape in form and having the free extremities of its side members 3 loosely engaged with an axle 4. Mounted upon the outer end portion of the axle 4 isa supporting wheel 5, of any ordinary or preferred type. T he lower portion of the sprocket wheel 12 is operatively engaged with the upper stretch of an endless sprocket chain 16, disposed around a sprocked 17 suitably aitixed to the shaft 7 of an adjacent harrow section. 'lhe chain 16 is also directed around an idle pulley or wheel 1S, rotatably supported by the inwardly and upwardly directed end portion 1S) of an arm 20. The arm 20 is suitablyattixed, as indicated at 2l, to the axle 4, and is disposed rearwardly and upwardly from the axle 4 on a predetermined incline, so that the pulley or wheel 18 may be positioned a predetermined distance rearward of the sprocket l2.' Tt is also to be noted that the pulley or wheel 18 is capable of adjustment longitudinally of the end portion 1t) of the arm 20, so that the upper stretch of the chain lt may be maintained in requisite engagement with the sprocket 12.
Suit-ably secured to the beam 1 and extending forwardly therefrom is a substantially horizontally disposed frame l-l, including the intermediate parallel beams 21, and having the forward beam between the intermediate beams 21 offset upwardly, as indicated at 22. The space afforded by the offset portion 22 is closed by the strip 23, as clearly indicated in detail Fig. 5. Disposed through the offset portion and resting upon the strip 23, is a tongue T, the inner end portion of which is pivotally engaged, as at 24, at substantially the longitudinal center of the beam l. lt is tobe noted that the portion of the tongue T intersecting the horizontal frame H is of skeleton formation, as-indicated at 25, in order to prevent the tongue T from obstructing the View of the plant rows with which my improved device may be employed as a cultivator. Disposed longitudinally tongue T, and rotatably supported thereby, is a shaft 2G, provided at its rear end portion with a hand wheel 27, whereby the requisite rotation may be imparted to the direction of travel may be readily of the rear portion of theV rasiert shaft 26 by `the occupant of the seat S. The opposite or forward end portion of the shaft 26 is provided with a pinion 28, inv mesh with a rack 29, disposed longitudinally of the offset portion 22 of the frame S. By this arrangement it will be perceived that the controlled independently of the draft animals hitched to the tongue T, so that the device may be properly aimed with the plant rows or prevented froin sliding down when working on a hillside, as the draft can be readily equalized or controlled by swinging ythe tongue T about its pivotal connection 24. The rear portion of the tongue 26 is also provided with a toothed wheel 30, with which is adapted to coact a dog or pawl 31,'pivotally engaged with the rear or pivoted ond portion of the tongue T, in order to effectively lock the tongue T into dilferent adjustments about the pivot 24.
Rotatably supported by the forward end portions of the intermediate beams 21 and the frame H is a rock shaft 32, provided at each of its end portions with a depending arm 33. Pivotally engaged with the lower end portions of the arm 33 are rearwardly and downwardly diverging rods 34, having their opposite end portions ypivotally engaged, as at 35, with the side members 3 of the frame F. Also aiiixed to the shaft 32 is a rearwardly directed lever 36, terminating in close proximity to the seat structure S, and which is provided with a latch mechanism 37, coacting with a rack 38, carried by one of the beams 21, whereby it will be perceived that the device may be properly balanced in accordance with the weight of the occupant of the seat S. The seat S is suitably affixed to the free end portion of the rear end portion of the tongue T.
The side members 6 of each of the harrow sections are connected by the trans. versely disposed bar 40, arranged at a pre determined point in advance of the adjacent supporting wheel 5, and said bar 40 is provided at a predetermined point intermediate its length with an opening-41, through which is loosely directed an arm 42, pivotally engaged with a depending arm 43, carried bya second rock shaft 44, supported by the beams 21 of the frame The rod 42 is provided with a head or enlargement 45, herein disclosed as a con ventional nut threaded upon the lower end portion of the rod 42, underlying the bar 40 and adapted to contact with said bar to raise the harrow section when upward movement is impartedV to the rod 42. The rodV 42 is moved upwardly upon requisite rocking movement being impar-todito the shaft 44, and, as herein disclosed, said shaft 44v is rocked through the medium ofa link 46, pivotally engaged with a rock arm 47, depending from the shaft A44:`andoperatively lltl llt
engaged with a lever 48, pivotally engaged with a side member 3 of one of the frames F. The lever 48 is provided with a conventional latch mechanism 49, coacting with a rack 50, also carried by the side member 3 of the frame F, whereby the harrow section may be held in its elevated position.
Encircling the rod 42 is a coil spring 51, interposed between the bar and an enlargement or collar 52, carried by the rod 42, whereby it will be perceived that limited upward movement of the harrow section is atforded independently of the rock shaft 44, and which limited upward movement is of special advantage when the blades 8 come in contact with some undue obstruction, such as a stone or stump. It will be self-evident that as soon as the blades 8 pass over the obstruction the spring 51 will force the harrow section downwardly to return the blades 8 to proper engagement with the soil.
It. is also my purpose to render the shaft 7 inoperative upon the elevation of each harrow section, and as herein disclosed this function is accomplished through the medium of the rearwardly and upwardly directed arm 53, pivotally engaged at its lower end with the bar 40 of the harr'ow section, and the upper extremity of said arm 53 is laterally inclined as at 54, to afford a cam action. 'Ihe inclined porton 54 is directed through a loop 55, carried by the outer side men-ber3 of the adjacent frame F. The inclined portion 54 is continued in an out wardly and laterally directed extension 56, terminating in an inwardly and forwardly directed fork 57, operatively engaged in a conventional manner with the hub portion 58 of the sprocket wheel 12. It is thought to be self-evident that upon the elevation of a harrow section, the cam portion 54 of the armV 53 will cause the sprocket 12 to move inwardly a distance sutiicient to disengage the clutch faces 14 and 15.
I also find it of advantage to provide a ground-engaging member adapted to coactwith the soil rearwardly of the supporting wheels 5. As herein disclosed I employ a substantially U shape ground-engaging member M, having the free end portions of its side members 59 pivotally engaged with the side members 6 of a harrow section. The intermediate portion 60 of the member M is disposed on a predetermined incline relative to the direction of travel of the machine, so that a more effective action may be had upon the soil. It is also to be noted that the side members 59` are disposed outwardly of the members 6 of a harrow sect'on so that the intermediate portion 60 intersects the line of travel of the adjacent supporting wheel 5. As herein embodied this is accomplished through the medium of a rock -arm 61 supported by the side members 6y of a harrow section, and which is provided with the rearwardly directed rock arms 62, terminating in eyes 63, through which the side members 59 of the member M are loosely tirected. The shaft 61 is also provided with an upstanding rock arm 64, with which is pivotally engaged a rod 65, which is also pi'votally engaged as at 66, with the forward end portion of one of the intermediate beams 21 of the frame H. It will be at once self-evident that as the harrow section is raised, the rock arm 64 will be forced downwardly, resulting in an elevation of the rock arm 62, and a corresponding elevation of the member M.
If preferred, the intermediate portion of the rear ground-engaging"member may be in the nature of a cutting blade, as indicated at 67 in Fig. 7 of the accompanying drawings; and when the blade 67 is employed, I find it of advantage to provide each end thereof with a forwardly directed wing 68, pivotally engaged as at 69 with a side member I also find it of advantage to provide the side member 59a and the adjacent wing 68 with a coacting means 70, whereby vthe blade 67 may be disposed on different pitches, as the necessities of practice may dictate.v l
I also find it desirable to provide the dog or pawl 31 with a latch mechanism 71 adapted to coaet with a rack 72 carried bythe rear end portion of the tongue T, whereby the deg or pawl 31 may be positively,T locked in mesh with the 'toothed' wheel 30, or out of engagement therewith.
In Fig. 8 I illustrate a modified mounting for the upper end portion of the rod 65.
As herein disclosed the upper end portion of the rod is pivotally engaged at 73 with a lower end portion of an elongated member or bar 74 loosely disposed through the adjacent intermediate beam 21a. The member or bar 74 is constantly urged upwardly through the medium of an eXpansible member 75, herein disclosed as a coil spring encircling the member orl bar 74, and interposed between the beam 21n and a stop or head 76 carriedv by the upper end portion of the member vor bar 74. As herein disclosed the stop or head 76 comprises a conventional nut or bur threaded upon the sgg upper end portion of said member or bar 74., The opposite end portion of the member or bar 74 is provided with a stop or head 77 adapted to engage the. under face of the beam 2l, vvhereby the upward movement of the member or bar 'Tel under the influence of the expansible member 75 is limited. By the use of the structure particularly illustrated in Fig. 8 it will be at once self-evident that in the event the rear groundeengaging member, such as M, should contact with an undue obstruction, such as rocks and stumps, the ground-engaging portion of said member will reac ily ride thereover. lt will also be selfevident that the eXpansible member 75 serves to maintain the rear ground-engaging member in proper contact with the soil.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious lthat a harrow constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly Well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification Without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof7 and for this reason l do not"\vish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice, except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
1. A harroW including a movable section, a ground engaging member carried by the section, means for imparting movement to the section in one direction, a second ground engaging member operatively engagcd with the harrow section, and cO-acting means carried by the harroiv section and the second ground engaging member for throwing the second ground engaging member into an inoperative position upon move- -ment of the harrow section in one direction.

A harronT including a swinging section, a ground engaging member carried by the section, means for imparting swinging movement to the section in one direction, a second ground engaging member pivotally engaged with the barrow section, a rock arm carried by the harrow section, the outer end portion of the arm having sliding engagement with the second ground engaging member, and means co-acting with the rock arm for moving the same upwardly upon the movement of the harrovv section in one direction.

5. e. harrovv' including a frame, a shaft rotatably supported by the frame, clutch controlled means for rotating the shaft and including a sliding member, a harroW section carried by the frame and mounted for swinging movement, means for imparting movement to the harrow section in one direction, an arm'pivotally engaged with the barrow section, and having its free end portion operatively engaged with the sliding member of the clutch, an intermediate portion of the arm being inclined, and a guide carried by the framethrough which the inclined portion of the arm is directed, said inclined portion of the arm and guide serving to render the clutch controlled means for driving the shaft inoperative upon movement of the liarroiv section in one direction.
