i=1 MATTER, OF TROISDORF, GERMANY, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, 1'0
VEREINIGTE KOLN-ROTTWEILER PULVERFABRIKEN, 0F BERLIN, GE.
IN TIAL IGNITER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 22, 1918.
Application filed April 17, 1913. Serial No. 761,843.
To aZZ'wkomz't may concern:
Be it known that I, OSKAR MATTER, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, and a resident of Troisdorf, in the Empire of Germany, have'invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Initial Igniters, and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
While my invention comprises an improvement 1n initial igniters in general, it has special reference to the production of certain types of initial igniters as hereinafter set-jorth.
It has been found in the past that detenators containing fulminate of mercury and certain inorganic substances such, for example, as chlorate of potassium, may be made more powerful by substituting for a part of thefulminate of mercury a quantity of ,picri'c acid, trinitrotoluol or tetranitromethylanilin.
v1 have discovered, however, that even more powerful detonators may be made by the use of nitropentaerythrite, especially if this is used in connection with any detonating substance such as fulniinate of mercury or lead azid. lhe powerful eflect of nitropentaerythrite is also, of course, observed in the ,case where it is used in connection with further detonatin substances such, for example, as tetramtromethylanilin, trinitro-- toluol, picrie acid, etc.
A detonator made in accordance with my invention may, for example, be produced as follows: A detonating composition made in accordance with my invention may be comprised of 1 gram of nitropentaerythrite and a-laycr of .2 gram of lead azid. It is found that a detonator of this kind gives in a lead cylinder of 10x10 cm. an average net expansion of about 46 ccm., while, on the contrary, a detonator made with 1 gram of tetranitromethylanilin and a layer of .2 gram of-lead .azid, fired under like conditions, gives an expansion of only 34 com. to 35 ccm., and a detonator comprised of 1 gram of trinitrotoluol with a layer of .2 gram of lead azid, -similarly fired, gives an expansion of only 29 com. to 30 com.
' bursting charges. An initial i My invention is especially applicable also as a priming for explosives very diflicult to detonate such, for example, as crystalline trinitrotoluol containing 10% of castor oil. A charge of 50 grams of trinitrotoluol containing 10% of castor oil fired with the nitropentaerythrite lead azid detonator given above, in a conical lead cylinder of 400 mm. diameter, gives an average expansion of 1365 com.
My invention is also particularly suitable when applied as a priming for projectile iter made in accordance with my invention possesses great detonation safety and is absolutely insensitive to external influences such as heat, moisture, etc.
While I have described my invention above in detail, I wish it to be understood that many changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit of my inventlon.
I claim:
1. An initial igniter composition containing nitropentaerythrite and another detonating substance.
2. An initial igniter composition containing nitropentaerythrite and lead azid.
3. An initial igniter composition containingnitropentaerythrite and a layer of another detonatin substance.
. 4.; An initial lgniter composition containingdnitropentaerythrite and a layer of lead an 5. A detonator comprising nitropentaerythrite and another detonating substance.
6. A detonator comprising nitropentaerythrite and lead azid.
7. A detonator comprisin rythrite and a layer of anot substance.
8. A detonator comprising nitropentaerythrite and a layer of lead azid.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand.
OSKAR MATTER.
