To all 'whom t may concern:

citizen of the United States, residing aty Omaha, in theY county of Douglas and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful I lColt and Calf Weaner, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a colt and calf weaner and is more particularly designed as an improvement upon the'structure disclosed in Patent No. 709,140, issued to me on September 16, 1902.

Onevof the objects of the invention is to obviate the use of a throat strap such las has heretofore been required and which, if not properly tightened, would allow the flap of the weaner to fall below the mouth and thus fail to operate for the purposes intended.

A further object is to provide a device of this character which will rest comfortably upon the nose of the animal and thus insure the proper positioning of the flap without requiring that the attachment be held tightly about the neck, as heretofore.

Another object is to provide the weaner with prongs which will keep the mother from the calf.

A still further object is to provide a device of this character which is cheap to construct, is simple and will not readily get out of order.

l/Vith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the c0mbination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of which is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.

arms 3 also formed preferably of stiff wire. llach of these side arms has an intermediate angular loop 4 and an vend angular loop 5. An arched strip 6 of sheet metal is secured at its ends to the respective loops 4 and is designed to bear downwardly upon the nose of the animal to which the device is applied. The loops 5 are adapted-to be adjustably engaged by a strap 7 designed to extend over the back of the head of the animal.

Arcuate retaining wiresS and 9 arc secured loosely at their ends to the loops 5 and 4 respectively and are adapted to` extend under the head of the animal, these wires being loosely connected by a wire 10 mounted upon the middle portions thereof.

Secured to each arm 3 between the loop 4 and the pivot wire 1 is a guard plate 11 designed to extend downwardly to a point below the mouth of the animal, this guard plate being held against pivotal movement on the arm 8 by an ear 12 which engages the loop 4.

Pivotally connected to the wire 1 are ears 13 extending from the front flap 14 of the weaner, this front flap being made of sheet metal and having rearwardly extending side wings 15 which preferably converge forwardly, there being prongs or spurs 16 extended from the wings 15 and also from the lower edge of the iiap 14. Secured to and converging forwardly from the loops 4 are wires 17 forming parts of a guard 18 arranged above the space between the side guards 11 and this wire nose guard preferably includes arcuate bearing members 19 from which extend forwardly projecting prongs 20. The entire wire nose guard is preferably bowed transversely so as to iit comfortably upon the nose of the animal. The guard 18 extends slightly in front of the muzzle of the animal and cooperates with the flap 14 in preventing the animal from securing milk from its mother.

It will of course be apparent that when the head of the animal is raised the iiap 14 will swing backwardly so as to come against the side guards 11, the strip 6 operates to support the device in proper position across the mouth while the bowed wires 8 and 9 prevent the device from being lifted from position. When the head is lowered the flap 14 will swing to open position and will leave the mouth exposed so that the animal can graze at will. The prongs 20 Patented Jan. ,15, 1918.

and the spurs 16 will constitute efficient means for keeping the mother from the animal.

By employing the wires 8 and 9itbeco1nes unnecessary to use leather straps under the head and, consequently, the cost of the device is materially reduced. The strip 6 and the nose guard 18, cooperating with the Wires 8 and 9, insure the proper disposition of the device at all times and it becomesunnecessary to use a tight strap across the throat, as heretofore.

What is claimed is 1. A weaner including connected side arms, a flap pivotally supported thereby, side wings rigid with and normally projecting rearwardly and downwardly from the flap, the lower and rear edges of the wings merging into a downwardly and rearwardly projecting prong, a guard rigidly secured to the side arms and cooperating with the Hap, and means for securing the device to the head of an animal.

2. A Weaner including connecting side arms, a flapvpivotally supported thereby, side wings rigid with and normally projecting rearwardly and downwardly from the flap, the lower and rear edges of the wings meeting in a rearwardly and downwardly projecting prong, an open-work guard rigidly connected to the side arms and extending above and coperating with the flap, and means for securing the device to the head of an animal.
