EDWARD BROWN, O'F BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN DIES FOR PRESSING BULLETS.
SPECIFICATION.
Be it known that I, EDWARD BROWN, of the city of Brooklyn, county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Punches and Dies for Making and Com pressing Bullets, and for like purposes, of which the followingis a specification, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawing.
The nat-ureof this invention consists in a novel method of constructing the die or punch of a compressing-machine for making bull ts, &c., of lead, or other soft metal, so that they will all be of a like shape, size, weight, and density. This I accomplish by means of my invention.
In the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a longitudinal central section of my improved die for compressing bullets, &c. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal central section of a punch embodying my improvement.
In Fig. l of the drawing, a represents the die of a bullet-compressing machine, made of steel or any other desirable metal. 0 c c are small holes or vents, which pass through the walls or sides of the die, as shown these holes I make smaller on the inner surface than on the outer surface. (I is the compressing-punch, which may be made hollow and with holes or vents, as shown in Fig. 2. e is the ejector, which may be made in any desirable shape or i manner.
In the formation of bullets, &c., with my improved die or punch the operation is as follows: The ingot of lead is first inserted in the die a, the punch d is then pressed forward into the die a, and as the lead is compressed into shape the surplus lead is forced out of the die a through the small holes or vents c c c. As the punch d is withdrawn the ejectoremoves into the die a and forces the bullet outof the die. At the same time the bullet is trimmed, as, in moving'out of the die, the metal extending from it into the passage or vents c is cut off. The die is then ready for another ingot of lead, and'the same operation is performed.
By the use of my invention bullets, &c., may be made true and perfect, and having no wiry or burry edges.
It is obvious that my improved die and punch may be used for many purposes, and the holes or vents may be applied to either the punch-die or ejector with favorable effect so as to allow the escapa-ge of surplus metal.
Having thus fully described the nature of my invention, I desire to secure by Letters Patent The compressing-die a, having vents or holes 0 a, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
EDWARD BROWN. Witnesses:
