Description

Will. H. SIMPSGN SELF BINDING SHEET MUSIC COVERu APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 1. I016,
UNITED sra rns Jeannie anion.
WILLIAM HENRY SIMIPSO'N, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
Application filed September 1, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM HENRY SIMPSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and the State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Self-Binding Sheet-Music Cover.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a binder of simple construction in which a relatively large number of sheet music pieces can be easily and quickly inserted or detached, of which the following is a. specification.
I accomplish this object by the binder described herein and illustrated in the acc0mpanying drawings.
Other and further objects of my invention will become readily apparent to persons skilled in the art from a consideration of the following description when taken in conjunction with the drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is an enlarged transverse sectional view showing a plurality of leaf-engaging strips properly hinged together at each end.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the book-like structure open and the manner of inserting the sheets in the binder.
Fig. 3 is a detail.
The same numerals refer to similar parts throughout the views.
In carrying my invention into effect I provide a series of strips of relatively narrow and long stiff material, such as press board, or the like, in length somewhat greater than the length of the sheet of music, and around which the sheet is to be placed in the act of securing it in the temporary loose-leaf binder. I then hinge these strips together, at each end, leaving sufficient space between the hinges within which to contain the sheet of music or the like. After the strips have been thus hinged together, they are suitably connected to covers or backs to provide a book-like structure.
In the drawings, in which one exemplification of my invention is shown, 2 represents a series of parallel, sheet-retaining strips, hinged together at each end by a suitably fiexible means, such as tape 1 or the like. The tape is folded around the ends of the strips 2 and glued thereto as by the ap- Specification of Letters Patent.

plates may be composed of book-binders board; or other suitable material.
The cover plates 77 may be connected together by a suitably pliable material, or
fabric 10, shown in Fig. 2. This connecting means should be yielding and flexible so as not to interfere with the sheet retaining means to prevent it from opening out fiat, as shown. In inserting a leaf, such as 8 and 9, as shown in Fig. 2, the leaf is placed under one of the strips 2, and drawn into position so that a leaf may be on each side of the strip 2 and between the hinges at each end thereof. By this means a folded leaf of music may be placed around each of the strips 2 and the binder may contain as many sheets as there are strips in its composition. The sheets may be easily and quickly removed from the binder. I
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A binder comprising a series of relatively thin, narrow and long parallel strips; a fabric folded around and secured to the ends of the strips to provide hinges at each end, the folds on opposite sides of each strip connected together at like edges and covers for said binder to which the terminals of said fabrics are suitably connected, respectively.
2. A binder comprising a series of rola' tively thin, narrow and long parallel strips; a fabric folded around and secured to the ends of the strips to provide hinges at each end; a flexible backing to which said hinges are also connected and covers for said binder to which the respective terminals of said fabrics and backing are suitably connected.
WILLIAM HENRY SIMPSON.
