To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRED SPANGLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Midway, in the county of La Crosse and State of v'l isconsin, have invented certain new and useful improvements in l/leeh nical Movements, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a mechanical movement designed to be operated by a wind wheel and has for its principal object to provide means for conserving the energy derived from wheels of this character so that the speed and power of mechanism operated thereby may be maintained by the use of wind wheels of moderate size rotating at moderate speeds.
The invention consists in the provision of a reciprocating rod operable by the wheel whereby power is transmitted from the wheel to any desired mechanism.
Specifically, the invention contemplates the provision of an arm to which the rod is connected and means operable by the wheel to raise the arm, which latter and the rod are adapted to be moved downwardly from their raised positions by gravity. It is another object of the invention therefore, to provide balance means to insure of smooth operation of the arm.
A further object of the invention is to providemeans to permit of the arm falling swiftly from its raised position but which will operate to gradually lessen the speed of such fall and stop the arm as it approaches its downward limit of movement.
\Vith the foregoing and other objects in View, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully desc ibed, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and claimed.

Referring to the drawings by numerals wherein is illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention, 1 designates a wind wheel which is journaled upon a shaft 2 which is in turn journaled for free rotation within a bearing 3 provided upon a bracket 4. the bracket being supported in any suitablemanner to position the wind wheel, con

The bracket a is provided with a laterally extending offset arm 5 carrying at its outer end a bearing 6 within which is journaled for free rotation a stud shaft 7. "this shaft at its inner end is provided with a gear wheel 8 which meshes with a similar gear 9 of lesser diameter carried bythe shaft 2.
A second laterally extending arm 10 is formed upon the bracket l and extends oppositely to the arm 5 to one side of the bearing 3. T his arm 10 is of any desired length and terminates in a vertically extending por tion 11.
An arm 12 is pivoted intermediate its ends, as at 13, to the arm 10 of the bracket and extends transversely of the wheel across the rear face of the gear 8 in spaced relation This arm extends in the opposite direction from its pivot point any desired distance and at its outer end connected, as at ll, to a right tension 15 upon a bar 16.
A link 17 is pivoted at one end of the upper end of the extension 11, as at 18, and at its opposite end is pivotally connected, as at angular ex- 19, to the right angular extension of the bar 16 in spaced relation to the pivot 14:. c
A weight 20 is adjustably mounted upon the bar 16 and this weight is adapted to counter-balance the weight of the arm 12 and the operating means connected therewith to insure of smooth operation of the arm.
The bracket is provided with an enlargement 21 having a vertically extending opening therein forming a bearing for a rod 22, the said rod having pin and slot connection 23 with the arm 12 whereby the rod is reciprocated upon operation of the arm.
eyed to the rear end of the shaft 7 is a. frame 24 which comprises arms extending in opposite directions from the shaft having mounted in their outer ends rollers 25. This frame 2% is so positioned upon the shaft 7 as to directly underlie the free end of the arm 12.
As the wheel 1 rotates, the shaft 2 will turn thereby turning the ear 9. The gear 9 meshing with the gear 8 will turn the shaft 7 and due to the dilference in diameters of the gears 8 and 9, increased power will be obtained from the shaft 2 and the shaft 7. Turning of the shaft 7 will swing the arms of the frame 21- and cause the rollers 25 to is pivotally' 6 suitable manner.
The provision of the bar 16 carrying the adjustable weight 20 together with the link 1? provides means to permit of the arm 12 falling swiftly from its raised position and also acts as means to lessen and stop the downward movement of the arm as it reaches its lowermost limit of movement. iVhen the arm 12 is in a raised position, as shown in full lines in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the bars 16 carrying the weight 20 will be swung inwardly so as to be positioned relatively close to the pivot point 13 of the arm. As the free end of the arm moves downwardly, the arm 16 will be swung outwardly and the weight 20 due to the increased leverage thus formed, will cause the arm to lessen its speed of downward movement. \Vhen the arm 12 reaches a position as shown in dotted linesin Fig. 1 of the drawings, the link 17 will act as a stop to limit further outward movement of the bar 16 and thus prevent the pivoted end of the arm from moving farther in an upward direction. It will thus be seen that the arm and rod 22 are permitted to initially fall swiftly from a raised position and that their speed of downward travel is gradually lessened until they are stopped.
A plurality of openings 26 may be provided in the right angular extension of the bar 16 and the link 17 may be engaged with any one of the same so that the limit of travel of the outer end of the arm 12 may be varied thereby providing means whereby the length of reciproeations of the rod 22 may also be varied, it being understood that frames having various length arms may be attached to the shaft 7 when the link 17 is adjusted with respect to the extension 15 to move the rod 12 a greater or lesser distance as desired.
By providing a small gear upon the shaft 2 and a relatively large gear upon the shaft 7, it will be seen that increased power is obtained between the shafts 2 and 7 while 'the provision of oppositely arranged arms of the frame member provides means whereby the arm is raised twice by each revolution of the large gear so that the desired speed of the operating rod 22 is maintained with full power to perform the work called for by the employment of a wheel of moderate size.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with theaccompanying drawings, it is thought that the construction and operation of my improved wind wheel will be readily understood and While I have herein shown and described one preferred embodiment of my invention, I do not wish to be limited thereto except for such limitations as the claims may import.
I claim: a
1. A device of the character described comprising a prime rod, an arm for operating said rod, means for raising said arm, said means being operable by the primemover, and counterbalance means carried by said arm, said counterbalance means being adapted to swing relatively to the arm as the arm is moved.
2. A device of the character described comprising a power wheel, an arm, a rod connected to said arm and movable downwardly by gravity, means driven by the power wheel for raising said arm, and means connected to and operable by the downward movement of the arm to lessen the speed and to limit the extent of such. downward movement. 3. A device of the character described comprising a power wheel, an arm, a rod connected to said arm, means for raising said arm, said arm being adapted to swing downwardly uner the action of gravity, and means to reduce the speed ofthe downward movement of the arm gradually throughout its length of downward movement.
4. A device of the character described comprising a power wheel, a pivoted arm, a rod connected to said arm, means for raising said arm, saidarm being adapted to fall under the action of gravity, and means to gradually decrease the speed of downward movement of the arm from its raised position to its lowermost limit of movement, said means serving as a stop to limit down ard movement of the arm past a predetermined point. a

A device of the character described comprising a power wheel, a'rod, a rocking arm for operating said rod, means operable by the power wheel for. rocking said arm, and a swinging weighted means movable to and from the axis of movement of said arm by the movement of the arm to limit the descent of the arm. 1

A device of the character described comprising a shaft, a power wheel mounted upon said shaft, a bracket, said shaft being journaled in said bracket, an arm pivoted to said bracket, a rod connected to said arm, a second shaft journaled in said bracket, a gear wheel carried by said second shaft, a gear Wheel carried by said first shaft, said gear wheels being adapted to mesh, arms carried by said second shaft, rollers carried by said arms for engagement with said first arm, a bar, a weight carried by said bar, said arm being pivoted to said bar, and a link connecting said bar with said bracket.
