To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR ENGELBERG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Account- Books, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements 1n account books and more particularly to a book of the columnar type wherein each page is correspondingly divided into a number of vertical columns, the headings of which are the same von all the pages.
The principal object of my invention is to provide means for eliminating the necessity of filling in the headings of these columns on each page thus saving a large amount of routine labor.
Another object of my improved invention is to so construct a book of this character that the binding which in my book projects some distance from the top of the leaves will not become curved or bent in use.
The advantages of an account book of this character will be readily appreciated and with these and other objects in view my invention consists in the novel form and construction set forth in. the following specification and pointed out in the appended claim.
Reference should be had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification wherein,
Figure l is a view in plan of my improved book showing the same in its open position.
Fig. 2 is a slightly enlarged transverse sectional view through the book when the same is closed.
Denoting corresponding parts in the several views by the same numerals of reference, 2 denotes a front cover and 3 the back cover of the book, between which are held the pages l by means of the usual style binding. Covers 2 and 3 are extended some distance above the top of the leaves 3 and attached to this extended portion are raised strips 4 and 5, which have a thickness equal to approximately that of half the pages. The pages themselves are divided by vertical rulings into a number of columns 6 and the face of strips 4 and 5 have a corresponding vertical ruling. These strips are also divided into one or more horizontal spaces and 8 indicates the folio numbers, the vertical columns on the strip and those on the pages being correspondingly numbered as shown at 7, in order to kfacilitate the finding of the several columns and the entering of the amounts therein.
In use the items are written once on the face of strips 4 and 5 as shown at 9 and as the pages are turned the columns thereof aline approximately on the rulings with the face of these strips, thus making it unnecessary for the items to be rewritten on each page; by having the strips 4 and 5 raised as shown the greatest offset between the pages of the book and the inside of the cover is only half that which it would be, if the items were written directly on the inside of the covers.
The additional advantages gained are due to the fact that when the book is closed the face of these strips are in contact-,which prevents injury to the covers in case of a weight or other objects being placed on the overhanging edges.
What I claim as new and wish to cover by Letters Patent is An account book comprising a plurality of leaves, a cover including front and back cover boards, the said cover being formed with a relatively wide extension along the top edge thereof, raised strips carried by the inside of the front and back cover boards on said extension, the bottom edge of said raised strips being parallel and closely spaced in relation to the top edge of said leaves, said strips being approximately of equal thickness and having a combined thickness equal to the thickness of the leaves, and vertical rulings provided on the face of said strips and the leaves, these rulings being adapte-d to correspond one to the other.
