The lateral bearing surface upon the shaft 10 is secured by providing two elongated keys 3, which are fixed in the grooves 4 of the collar 12 and slide in key-ways or slots in the shaft 10. The ends of the keys 3 extend beyond the ends of the collars 12 a considerable distance, but preferably not more than half the width of the collar 12. It will be noted from Figs 2 to 5 inclusive that four key-ways or slots 9 have been provided in the shaft 10, and that four corresponding grooves 4 are formed in each collar 12, but each collar carries keys 3 in I only two diametrically opposite'grooves l in which the keys are secured by means of screws 5. This enables the keys 3 on any collar 12 to be received inthe corresponding alined grooves 4 of the adjacent collar 12 when the two saws 11 are moved 'closetogether so that the keys do not in any way interfere with the approaching of the saws until the adjacent ends of the saw-collars 12 abut. It is, of course, realized that while only four grooves have been shown, any other desirable number of grooves may be provided, the principle being that the keys3 are fixed in one saw-collar 12 in alinement with vacant grooves 41; in adjacent saw-collars 12. I
In order to properly lubricate the coact- 7 ing surfaces of the shaft 10 and saw-collars 12'during sliding of the collars along the shaft, the collars 12are provided with'sets of'chambers 6 between the grooves 4 thereof, these chambers being packed with oil-saturated waste 7 to which lubricant may be supplied through holes 8, see Fig. 6.

In combination, a shaft having two grooves therein, a pair of saw-collars having 7 each two grooves therein, and a pair of keys mounted in the grooves of the'respe'c'ti've collars; each key sliding in one of the grooves in the shaft and having an end projecting beyond the saw-collar in which it is fixed and adapted to be received Within the vacant groove of the other saw-collar.
3. In combination, a rotating shaft having a longitudinal groove therein, and a pair of saw-collars nonrotatably linounted on said shaftand one of which is slidable thereon,
said slidable collar havinga key sliding in 7 said groove and projecting beyo'ndthe end ,of'the collar, and the other collar havinga recess adapted to receive the projecting end of said key whereby the two collars are enabled to approach close together.

5. In combination, a rotating shaft, a pair of" saw-collars nonrotatably and slidably mounted thereon, each of said collars having one or'more laterally projecting elements on theside adjacent to the other collar adapted to form extensions of the bearing-surface of the collars upon said shaft, and each collar having also one or more recesses adjacent to the shaft which are in line with and adapted to receive the projecting'element or elements on the other collar,-whereby said'collars are enabled to approach close together;
6. In combination, a saw-shaft having one or more pairs of longitudinal grooves therein, and a pair of saw-collars slidably mounted on said shaft and each carrying one or more keys which project beyond the collar, each key mounted on one collar engaging in one of the grooves of said shaft and lying opposite to a vacant space on the other collar, whereby it passes under said collar when the two collars are approached.
7. In combination, a saw-shaft having four equally spaced longitudinal grooves therein, a pair of saw-collars slidably mounted on said shaft and each having four collar, whereby each pair of keyscarried by corresponding grooves in their naves, and one collar is adapted to be received'vvithin four keys which are longer than the saw-colthe vacant grooves of the other one as said 1; lars and two of Which are mounted in one collars are approached.
