Referring-now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, my device comprises a main or storage tank 5 closed at its top and provided with an intermediate partition 6 extending from its closed top to'a point adjacent its bottom and dividing the tank into communicating compartments A and B. Communicating with and extending from the compartment Bis a pipe 7 which extends, to asteam pipe 7 of the heating system, ortoany other yapor space thereof, such as thetop of the boiler. This pipe may be disposed jeither horizontally as shown, or it may incline downwardly whereby in both instances to provide a free drain age for the tank, and also provide for a free communication of steam or other vapor with the upper portion of the tank. A'water glass 2a has its ends connected with the top and bottom portions of the compartment B of the storage tank. 7 Taking up now the operation of my device, the device is adjusted so that with the normal desired pressure of the heating sys tem the lever 1315 is inclined with its tank in a raised position, preferably with the draft damper closed and the check damper partly open. Upon increase of pressure in the system and consequently in the upper portion of thecompartment B of the storage tank, water is forced by such pressure into the compartment A and from thence through the pipe 18 into the actuating tank 14, and the pipe arm 13 of the lever becomes consequently weighted sufliciently to swing the lever and open the check damper 18, or close the draft damper 17 or actuate both dampers in accordance with the relative positions of the dampers and the degree of operative movement of the lever arm, such actuation of the dampers obviously serving in any instance to check the fire inthe furnace and consequently reduce the pressure of the system. Upon such reduction of pressure, the water will flow back into the storage tank and the lever and its connected dampers will move to aposition wherein the desired vapor pressure is maintained. By the provision of the plate 20 adjustably connected with the lever arm 13, desired relative adjustments of the draft and check dampers may be most readily effected. It is noted that the volume of the compartment B of thestorage tank 5 is equal to the volume of the actuating tank 14. Consequently upon a maximum occurrence of pressure filling the tank 1 1, thewater glass 24 would be practically emptied and thus by these equal volumes, the exact vapor prrssure may be read throughout the entire length of the water glass 24, it being noted that as usual in devices of this character the tank 14: normally has free communication with the atmosphere, and may be provided if desired with a conventionally designated valve 25 preferably of the float type to prevent its possible overflow under excessive pressure other means. r

A controlling device of the class described comprising the combination with a boiler of a closed tank, a partition extending from the top of the tank to a point adjacent its bottom whereby to provide two communieating compartments, a pipe connecting the top of one compartment with the steam space of the boiler, a pivot mounted upon the wall of said tank and communicating with the other compartment, a lever swiveled to'said pivot and including a pipe arm communicating with said other compartment through the pivot and a rod arm, a counter-balanced weight adjustably carried by the rod arm, a tank carried by and communicating with said pipe arm, the volumes of said tank and the first mentioned compartment being equal, and heat controlled means for the boiler and adjustably connected with said lever, the water of the first mentioned compartment being adapted upon entrance thereto from the boiler of excessive steam pressure to force the water in said other compartment into the tank carried by said lever whereby to operate the heat controlled means, substantially as described.
