VALVE-LIFTING TOOL.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patente d J an. 1, 1918.
Application filed August 7;1916. Serial No. 113,584.
To all whom it mayconcem:
Be it known that LCHARLIE J. BoUsrmLn, a citizen of the-United States of America, residing at Bay City, in'the' county of Bay and State of Michigan, have invented oertain new'and useful Improvements in Valve- Lifting Tools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to valve llfting or pick up tools.
One object of my invention is to provide a tool for lifting or picking up valves of'the variety provided with a slot in th'eir -exposed faces.
Another object resides in the provision of resilient'means for frictionally engaging the opposed walls of the slot in the valve face, whereby the valve can be removed from its seat.
With the above and other objects in view, the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes may be made in the form, size, proportion and minor details without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings Figure l is a front elevation of my improved tool.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof showing the tool about to be inserted in the slot.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation showing the tool inserted in the slot and gripping the sides thereof.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail view of the jaws.
In the drawings, an ordinary handle 1 is provided intowhioh is set one end of a main flat metal member 2. The material at the center of the extreme outer end of the memher 2 is cut away to provide two spaced aws 2 and 2 bent at a slight angle from the longitudinal axis of the member 2. A second fiat metal member 3 is located adjacent the member 2 and the material at the opposite sides of the extreme outer end of the member is cut away to provide a jaw 3" at the center of the member. This jaw 3 is bent at a slight angle from the longitudinal axis of the member 3 in a direction opposite to the bend of the jaws 2 and 2 of the member 2.
The two members 2 and are pivoted together at a point adjacent tothe outer ends thereof by means of a pin 6, whereby the jaw 3 of the member 3 is permitted to pass between the two jaws 2 and 2 of the member 2.
A flat spring I has its lower end'bent slightly outwardly at 4* and attached to-the member 2 by means of the pin 6. By having the outer end of the spring 4 bent slightly, the pin 6 is held rigid at alltimes, and yet allows for the playof the several members, which is necessary when the tool takes the position shown in Fig.2.

The spring at is provided with a notch 8 at its upper end and the pin 5 is received in this notch, the spring 4: thus pressing outwardly against the inner side of the head 7 An opening 9 is provided in the member 2 at the inner end thereof and the pin 5 is adapted to slide freely through said opening.
A valve provided with a slot in its upper face is indicated at 10.
Normally the spring 4 holds the member 3 against the member 2 with the jaws 2 and 2 spaced apart from the jaw 23*. When it is desired to apply the tool to a valve head provided with a slot, as shown at 10, the operator grasps the handle 1 and with his thumb presses against the head 7 of the pin 5. This pushes the pin 5 through the opening 9 in the member 2 against the tension of the spring 4 and thus separates the inner portions of the members 2 and 3. By reason of the pin 6 acting as a pivot, the jaws of the two members are brought into alinement, as shown in Fig. 2. The tool is then inserted in the slot in the valve 10 and the thumb removed from the head 7. The spring 4 will consequently resume its original position, drawing the member 3 against the member 2 and separating the jaws of the two members 2 and 3. As a result, the jaws are held in frictional engagement with the opposite sides of the slot and thus the valve can be removed from its seat.
What I claim is 1. In a device of the character described, a main member terminating in a pair of jaws, a second member terminating in a jaw and pivoted to the main member, and means for yieldably holding said members normally parallel and the jaws diverging.
2. In a device of the character described, a main member and a second member, said members being pivotally connected together and having cooperating jaws, and means, including a spring, arranged adjacent the outer face of the main member and having connection with the second member to hold the members normally parallel and constructed to efiect movement of the members out of parallelism. r
3. In a device of the character described, a main member having a pair of jaws, a second member having a jaw and pivoted to said main member, a spring arranged adjacent the outer face of one of the members for holding said members together and thereby holding the jaws apart, and means for separating the members and thereby bringing the jaws into alinement.
L. In a device of the character described, a main member having a pair of jaws, a
second member having a aw and pivoted to the main member, a spring fastened to the main member, and means connecting the spring and the second member, whereby when the spring is in one position thetwo members are held against each other and the respective jaws held apart, and when the spring is in another position the two members are separated and the respective jaws brought into alinement.
5. In a device of the class described, a main member provided with a pair of jaws, a second member provided with a jaw and pivoted to the main member, a spring attached to the main member, and a pin passing through said main member and connecting the spring and the second member, whereby when the spring is in normal position the two members are held against each other and the respective jaws separated and when the spring is put under tension the two members will be separated and the respective jaws brought into alinement.
