Application filed April 4:,
0 0L? whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, RALPH E. H, Ponznnoy, a citizen of the United States, residing at llfcGill, in the county of White Pine and State of Nevada, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Roasten Furnace Tops, of which improvementthe following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for preparing ore and concentrates for roast' metallurgical furnaces, and more particularly for the multiple hearth type of furnace ha ing avseries of superimposed working chambers and operated a revolvingce m ter shaft. or column with projecting rabble arms in the various chambers.
i l here ores are prepared by what is known as the flotation process, the resulting concentrale, which often contains a large amount of alumina, is of a very sticky con sistency, and very diliicult to handle, and she objects of my invention are to provide an improved drying hearth for treating this material, and heated solely the Waste heat of the furnace; to provide improved means for thoroughly mixing and stirring said malarial, and for feeding the same from the drying hearth into the uppermost chamber of the furnace; to provide a drying hearth open to the atmosphere and havihg a gas sealing means between said drying he "th and the upper chamber of the furnace; and to otherwise simplify and imfreely prove apparatus for preparing such ores and Concentrates for roasting.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure l is avertical section of a roaster furnace top embodying any improvement; Fig- 2, a half plan of same; Fig. 3, a horizontal section; and Fig. 4, vertical section of a portion of the gas seal and means for feeding ore into the upper chamber of the furnace.
While my improvement ma be employed in connection with various types of metallurgical furnaces, l have illustrated the same as applied tonnultiplc hearth roaster furnaces having a series of superimposed Working chambers, operated by a revolving vertical center shaft or column, 3, having projecting rabble arms, 4, in said chambers. The drawing shows the uppermost working chamber, 5, of the furnace, and the upper portion of center shaft rigidly secured to the rotatable section of the stack or outlei; pipe, 6, i? r ihe furnace gases, which communicates with the stationary portion,

6*, of said pipe leading out through the Wall or roof of the building to the flue or atmosphere. The stationary portion of said pipe may be supported on the furnace frame Work, 7, and the upper end of the rotatable section, 6, may be guided by means of a pluraity of rollers or Wheels, 8, mounted on truimions, 9, carried by the frame and en gaging metal ring, 10, mounted on the upper end of the rotatable section, 6.
According to my improvement, a drying hearth is located directly on the top of the uppermost Working chamber of the furnace, the roof of said chamber also constituting he lioor, ll, of said hearth whereby the Waste heat, from the furnace may be transmitted through said floor and be thus utilized for health 2 and drying the ore and concentrates pi". 2a l on said drier hearth.
, er hearth which is lo- The floor of the t ed around the revoluble center column or pipe, is preferably composed of a series of segmental metal plates, 11 and another-set of circumferential plates, 11", supported on brackets, 11, attached to the inner shell of the furnace wall, said iioor also forming the roof of the uppermost working chamberof the furnace. The drier hearth is provided with an outer cylindrical side wall, 12, and is freely open the top to the atmosphere for the ready escape of vapors of evaporation of the ore or concentrate.
For the purpose of thoroughly mixing and stirring the ore or concentrate during the drying process, various fo'ms of mechanism may be employed, operated by the revolving center column, and I have shown a preferred construction comprising a plurality of radial arms, 13, rigidly secured at their inner ends to the column or pipe, 6, and each suitably connected to a horizontal rotatable sha t, ll. carrying a series of disks, 15. These in i zontal shafts are setat an acute angle to the respective arms, and are shown as connected therewith by any suitable means such as a universal bearing, 16, at the inner end and chain, 17, at or toward the outer end. The length of the chains may be readily adjusted by suitable hooks to give the desired angle of iuclinati on of the disk shafts to the radial arms.
As a. preferred construction, there are shown four disk shafts, 14, on which are mounted, at suitable intervals, circular concave plates or disks, 15, the disks on two alternate shafts being so dished as to turn neoe around the flue, mechanism for mixing and stirring the ore or concentrate upon the floor of the hearth, sealing means for preventing the escape of gas to the drying hearth, and means for feeding the ore or concentrate from the central portion of the hearth around the gas line into the upper chamber of the furnace.
5, The combination wit a. metallurgical furnace, of e drying hearth located thereon, rotatable shaft or column at the center of the hearth, one or more redial arms operated by said. shaft, horizontal rotary shafts pivotally connected at one end to said arms,
and disks mounted on said horizontal shafts.
6. The combination with a metallurgical furnace, of a, drying hearth. located thereon, o rotateole shaft or column at the center of said hearth, one or more redial arms operated by said shaft, horizontal rotary shafts,
each set at an angle to a radial arm, means for adjusting the angle of said shaft, and
disks mounted on said horizontal shafts.
1"." The combination with a, metallurgical furnace, of a, drying hearth located thereon, c rotatable shaft or column at the center of said hearth, one or more redial arms opereted by said shalt, horizontal rotary shafts suitably connected to said arms, and disks mounted on said horizontal shorts, one of said disks being 01 a larger diameter than the others and engaging the floor of the hearth.
8. The combination with a metallurgical furnace, of a drying hearth located thereo a rotatable shaft or column at the, center of said hearth, one or more redial arms operated by said shafts, horizontal rotary shafts suitably connected to said arms, disks fixed upon said horizontal shafts, and a trailer disk loosely mounted at the outer end of one or more of said shafts.
9. The combination with a metallurgical furnace, of a drying hearth located thereon and having a circumferential series of re movable floor plates, a rotatable shutter column at the center of said heerth, one or more radial arms operated by said central shaft, horizontal. rotary shafts suitably connected to said arms, and disks mounted on said horizontal shafts, one ofsaid disks being of a larger diameter than the others and engaging said series of removable floor plates.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
RALPH E. H. roMERoY.
