Description

F. R. BELT.
SAFETY RAZOR.
APPLICATION FILED JAN.|1.1916.
Patented Dec; 18, 191?-r FRED R. BELT, F CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SAFETY-RAZOR.
To all whom z't may concern:
. Be itknown that I, FRED R. BELT, `a citi'- zen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the `county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Razors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to safety razors and it is my object to produce a device of this character which is. simple in construction, strong and durable, which will hold the blade rmly and which may be manufactured at a reasonable cost.
YThe following description when read in connection withthe accompanying drawing, illustrating a preferred embodiment of my invention, will be suflicient to make the construction and use of my device clear.
Ou the drawing Figure l represents a side elevation of my improved safety razor, the head thereof be.- ing shown in section; v Fig. 2 is a rear elevation showing the lugs for holding the blade in place; y l
Fig. 3 is a plan view showing the complete razor; v t Fig. 4 is a 4perspective view showing the cam, clamping member and guard;
Fig.. 5 is a perspective View showing the base;
Fig. 6 is a detail sectional View. Referringl to the drawings, ,ldesignates a base havingupstanding lugs 2 at the rear edge thereof for positioning the blade 3 which, in actual use, is seated on the fiat upper face ofthe base, and end lugs 4 in which the cam member 5 is pivotally mounted. A stem 6, a cam 5, a clamping member L 7 and a guard 8 constitute integral parts of the cam member and the handle may be integrally or detachably connected with the stem 6. Thebase ispivotally connected with the cam member by a pin 9 which passes through an opening l0 in the cam member and engages openings provided therefor in the lugs 4. The ends 1l of the opening 10 are enlarged while the intermediateportion of said opening is made to fit the pivot pin, as shown in Fig. 6.
base lies in a plane substantially parallel To insert the blade in the razor the base is turned relatively to the Vcam member by pressing upon the projection l2 until the Specification of Letters Patent.

Application iled January 17, 1916. Serial No. 72,448.
with the handle. This can be Veasily accomplished'v by holding thehandle in a substantially horizontal position iny one hand with the guard directed upward andy then pressing'downward upon theprojection l2 until the base is forced over the highpoint of the cam whereupon it will swing freely into a vsubstantially'horizontal position. The
blade can then be inserted in'the space be# tween the cam and the vbase and pushed backV until itsv rear, edgel engages the lugs 2. after which the base, carrying the blade,` is swung upward, being forced over the high point of the cam, which thereupon locks the blade and base in the normal position for use, as shown in Fig. 1. Infthis position the blade is clamped between the clamping member 7 and the forward edge of the base and also between the cam 5 and the opposite portion of the base so thatno vibration` of the blade can occur.
Toy remove `the blade lfrom the razor the operation is precisely the same as foi` inserting the bladebut it will be understood that instead ofv holding the cam member rigid and swinging the base, the base may beheld rigid and the cam member swung, although Ibelieve the former method will be found more convenient.
I Vprefer to make the pivot opening 1 0 with enlarged ends llrto permit a freedom of movement and more or less of a bending movement, as may be required, of the pivot pin therein. This enablesme to provide 'a comparatively strong cam action since the `enlarged ends ll of the pivot opening permit the pivot pin to yield therein as may be required when the base carrying the bladeis forced over the high point of the cam. I am thereby enabled to lprovide a secure and rigid lock with the cam which will notl become accidentally loosened since the base carrying the blade must be swung over the high point of the cani with va decided snap.
My improved razor comprisesa minimum number of parts which are assembled in convenient manner for use and which enables the blade to be easily inserted land removed as required. The blade is clampedin base and cam member is important not only for the reasons hereinbefore referred to but to accommodate blades which vary in thickness and also blades of different thickness.
I claim:
1. A safety razor comprising a base having a seat thereon adapted to receive a blade, a cam member pivotally engaged with said base to coperate therewith and secure the blade in place therebetween, and a guard integral with said cam member engaging and projecting beyond said blade.
v 2. A safety razor comprising a base having a seat thereon adapted to receive a blade, a cam member pivotally engaged with said base to cooperate therewith and secure the blade in place therebetween, and a clamping member and guard integral with said cam member engaging and projecting beyond said blade.
3. A safety razor comprising a base having a seat thereon adapted to receive a blade, and a cam member pivotally engaged with said base to coperate therewith and secure the blade in place therebetween and having integral therewith a guard projecting beyond the blade and base, a clamping member behind the guard to engage and support the blade, and a cam behind the clamping member to engage the blade.
4. A safety razor comprising a base having a seat thereon adapted to receive ai blade, and a cam member pivotally engaged with said base to coperate therewith and secure the blade in place therebetween and having integral therewith a guard projecty ing beyond the blade and base, a clamping member behind the guard to engage` and support the blade, a cam behind the clamping member to engage the blade, and a stem projecting above the cam to receive a handle.
