WITNESSES INVENTOR A TTORNEYS '-l1uskers and. has for its object to provide 'adevice of the character specified, whereina E ems GUSTAVE- LEOPOLD MILLER, or GnNEsEo, ILLINOIS;
coiiN-HUskER. Y 'I To all whom it may concern:
'Be it'known that I, GUSTAV L. MILLER, a citizen of the United" States, and Ya residentof Geneseo, inthe county of Henry "and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corn- Iluskers,of which: the following-isa specification.
My invention is an improvement in corn plate is provided curved in such manner asto conform a-pproxumately to the shape of the ear,an'd arranged within the fingers, the
palm, and over the ball of the thumb, and
' side'edgeof the support. A tab 5 is permahaving means for assisting in the firm grasp ot; the ear, 'and wherein the fingers and thumb are left free. r g In the drawings, Figure '1' is-a perspective View showing the manner of grasping the earto break it. from the stalk, 1
Fig.2 isa front View, X Fig. 3 is arear View. of the husker de- I tached, v
Figs. 4 and 5 and5-5 of Fig. 2, and i Y Fig. his a front view of a modified construction of hnskcr. V 7
In the embodiment of the invention shown in Figs. 1 to 5, a support 1 of leather or the like is provided, of sufficient size to cover the palm of the hand, and straps 2' and 3 are provided'for securing the support on the hand of the user. i p
The strap 2 has one end permanently cn-' nectedto the support atone side thereof, and the other end is adapted to engage a I buckle 4 which is secured to the oppositeare sections on the line4 4 nently connected withthe same side of the support as the strap 1, and the said tab carries a buckle 6 at its freeend 't'or engage.-' ment by the strap 3. --A plate/Z of rigid ma terial. as for instance metal, is secured to the support, by meansof rivets or the like, and the said plate is curved to fit within the palm of the hand from approximately the second joint of the fingers to and over the ball of the thumb. The outer end of the plate is of a width to extend from the inner side of the first finger, to and beyond the little finger, and the plate has an extension 8 at the outer side of the hand which curves around the said outer side, as shown more particularly in Figs. 1 and 2. extension disonnected to the opposite side of the plateat approximately the center:
thereof and at such positioirthat when the huskeris inplac'e on" the hand'ythis arm or extension will extend between the thumb 1 and the forefinger.-
The I strap 3 before mentioned, has one end permanently connected with the outer end oi this arm by means of. rivetas indi cated at- 10, and the sai'dstrap'p'asses across to the opposite side! of-the support and site side by means .of a tab; 12, and then.
portto a-buckle 6 before mentioned;
It will be noticed that thatportion of I the plate between the-first-joint of the fore-- fingei' and the thumb, is cutaway as shown at l2-topermittull freedom of-ithe thumb, and that. portion'of-the plate at the palm" su'p through a loop'll secured to the 'said opp'oe of the hand, and just in front ofthe'base' of the thum-bi's roughened to assist in grasping the ear, the roughening being providedin the present inst'a'nce byspnrs 13 which are struck-up from the material of the plate.
of spurs, the said hookbeing s'e'c'uredfto the plate bv means of rivets orthe'like 15,
is bent parallel toward th'e plate;
These spurs point toward/the outer ends of theffingers, and a husking-hook 14- is arranged on the plate at the ball of the thumb and on"th'e*innerf side of the-'series-iSs "andit will be notedthat the bill of thehook tion, the bill and the connecting portion,- are "at approximately; right angles to avoidcatchingof the husk between the bill flJIICl-f the attached portion.- T hat portion of the plate beyond the curved portion 8 maybe integral with the plate, or the said portion* may *be ad ustable, as shown in 'Fi'g.;-. 6,
wherein-this portion 7 isconnect'ed toxt'lie body of the plate by screw bolts 16.
' i Each bolt engages an openingfin the body of theplates7, and one of the series ofopenings in the portion 7*. so that the portion 7 may beadjusted with respect to the portion 7' to fit various sized hands.
In use, the husk is torn loose with the hook, and the operator grasps the ear in the manner shown in Fig. 1, sliding the hand toward the butt of the ear, while the left hand grasps the stalk, spreadingthe husk. The ear is now bentupward as indicated by the arrow in Fig. 2, breaking itfrom the stalk and from the husk which remains with the stalk. The thumb and fingers merely aid in holdingthe ear which is broken or torn from the stalk, not by the thumb and fingers, but by the plate. It is through the operation of the device, that is the husker, and not through the use of the thumb and fingers,-that the ear is broken from the stalk. That portion beyond the extension 8 is so shaped that a part of all the fingers and the greater part of the first andsecond fingers, extend beyond the; plate. This permits the ear of corn to be firmly grasped, and the plate extending over the ball otthe thumb relieves-the fingers from any strain in-thebreakingor snapping of the ear from the stalk.-
The spurs 13, which in the present instance are nine-in number, are for the purpose of permitting the ear'to be very firmly grasped during the breaking from the stalk. The bill of the hook points inward toward the plate to avoid striking and breaking out the kernels of corn. It will be noticed that the arm 9 is reinforced by bending. the same on its longitudinal axis to prplvide for-an angular portion-between its en s.
The curved armq9 fits smoothly but d uri'i 'tefib ver he; s of the th mb ndinth pa m. of th' h nd t P rmi the. fi ger to mo in gr spin position, said plate having a rigid arm curved over the; edge of 'the'hand between the thumb and'thc forefinger, and having an extension enrvedover the outer edge of the hand.
2.- A -device of thecharacter specified compris nga fiex blesupport having means for This-plate is of special-advantageduring connecting the same to the hand and a rigid plate secured thereto extending from approximately theouter side of the base of the thumb to the econd joint of the fingers, and curved to fit over the base of the thumb and in the palm of the hand, and to permit a the fingers to move into grasping position, 7
said plate having a rigid arm curved over the edge of the hand between the thumb and the forefinger. f
3. Adeviceof the character speeified comprising a flexible supporthaving means for connectingthe same to the hand and a rigid plate secured thereto extending from ap-v,
proximately the outer side of the base of the thumb to the second joint of the fingers, and curved to fit over the base of the thumb V and in the palm of the hand, and to permitthe fingers to moveinto grasping position at. A device of the character specified com prising a rigid plateconsisting of a body portion extending from the base of thethumb to the connection of the fingers with the hand and a curved extension at the end ad] acent to the fingers and shaped; to per-v mit the fingers to be curved to grasp-an ear when they are curved over thesame, and means for securing the plate to; the hand.
of corn, said extension extending to proximately the last joint of the fingers 5. A device of the character speeified'comprising a rigid plate having alength corresponding to the length or thehand and shaped to fit within the hand when partially closed, as in grasping position, the said plate consisting ofseetions adjustable j with respect to each other, ancbhaving means for securing them in adjusted'position, said plate being of a fwidth at outer end to extend from the inner side-of j the index finger to the inner side of. the hand and being cutaway at the thumb to permit the index finger and thumb tograsp an ear of corn. i v
6, A device of the character SPQClfiBdiCQHlf priSin-g a rigid plate having aleng'thcorre;
spending to the length of the hand-and shaped to fit withinthe hand when P3332" 7 tially' closed,= as in grasping position, said,
plate being of a width at its-outer end-to p, extend from thejinner side of'the index finger to the innerside of the hand and being cut away at the thumb to permit the index finger, and thumb to grasp an ear of corn.
