A. MCBRIDE.
LAUNDRY APPLIANCE. APPLICATION FILED OCT. 26. 1915.

LAUNDRY APPLIANcE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Dec. 11, 1917.,
Application ledctober 26, 1915. Serial No. 57,986.
To all whom t may concern: Y
Be it known that I, Mrs. ANNA MCBRIDE, a citizen 'of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Laundry Appliances, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to laundry appliances,'and, with regard to the more specific features thereof, provides a novel, simple and effective device for assisting in the handling of fabric articles in boilers and other forms of vessels used in cleaning clothes.
A principal object of the invention is to provide a device primarily adaptable for assisting in the removal of clothes from boilers containing hot water, the device being of such formation as to permit this function to be accomplished without scalding or otherwise injuring the operator.
With these and other objects in view, as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention comprises the various novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be more fully described hereinafter, and set forth with particularity in the claim appended hereto In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate one embodiment of the invention,
Figure l is a perspective view illustrating the application of th-e present invention,
Fig. 2 is a perspective View on a larger scale of the wash stick, and
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
Similar reference characters are employed to designate corresponding parts throughout the views.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the washstick in its entirety, and the same preferably includes a tapered wooden rod or bar 5 of circular shape in cross section, and formed, at one end, with a beveled face 6, the rod being of suiiicient strength to support the weight of various garments without any danger Of breaking, and for this reason, I will refer to the rod or bar 5 as the rigid member of the device.
The rod 5 passes through a frame 8 in the form of an elongated loop the sides of which converge toward the smaller end of the rod 5, one end of the frame being offset, as at 9, to coact with the beveled face 6 of the rod 5.
Gopies of this patent may be obtained for ve cents each, by addressing Washington, D. C.
turning of the frame uponthe barmay be controlled, so that the frame 8 may remain in adjusted position thereon if found de' sirable. A handle 12 connects'the sides of said frame 8 at its smaller end and is spaced from the coils l0, so that the grasping portions of the wash stick will be spaced, from clothes gripping claws to permit the device to'b'e operated without the possibility of hot water, from the clothes, contacting with the hands `of the operator. The manipulating portions of the device beingl spaced from the pivoted connection thereof gives a leverage to the device which permits a relatively strong pressure to be exerted by the clothes gripping jaws of the device and thereby insures the remaining-.of the clothes within the j aws while the device is being operated. The beveled portions 6 and 9 of the device A serve as additional precaution to prevent the clothes or other articles from slipping out of the clutches of the jaws of the structure.
It will lthus be seen that there is provided a device in which the objects of this invention are achieved, and all of the advantageous features abovementioned are, among others, present, the device being simple in operation and of few parts, thereby resulting in an economical construction.
Having described my invention, I claim A device of the class described comprising a tapered rod of circular shape in cross-section, headed fulcrum pins adjustably mounted in said rod between its ends, an elongated loop through which said rod is passed having the sides thereof converging toward the smaller end of the rod, an offset portion in said loop adjacent its closed end, coils formed from the-sides of said loop between their ends passing around said headed fulcrum pins, and a handle connecting the sides of said loop at the smaller end thereof.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
